i will repeat: there is NO way the egotistical, self-aggrandizing, attention-seeking, deceitful, and endlessly envious Capote would have let Harper Lee walk away with the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, an award he greatly coveted and never won if he'd so much as proof-read the first three paragraphs of the novel. It is well-documented that Capote was insanely jealous of Lee for receiving that award and quite bitter about it. The whole thing caused a rift in their friendship that never healed but grew wider until his death in 1984. In any case, Lee was also not only extremely honest, but modest, self-effacing, and naturally giving, which is why she did not crow to the world the massive contribution she made to the writing of IN COLD BLOOD while the two were researching the murders in Kansas. There's no way Capote could have gotten to first base with the hostile, frightened people of Finney County, and it was not only Lee who charmed these people and got them to talk, for they despised the flamboyant Capote on sight, while he seemed to be exerting himself to be downright offensive, it was also Lee who took 150 pages of notes, the very notes that Capote claimed he did not need. Yet he did not even include her in his acknowledgments, while the pay he gave her was trivial relative to the contributions she made. Then, there is the style of writing, which is almost like a fingerprint- the book is written in a style that is a world apart from Capote's, and he couldn't have written it any more than she could have written BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S.

Harper Lee's editors for Mockingbird brilliantly shaped the Atticus Finch everyone knows and loves. Almost as horrendous as Capote's Answered Prayers fiasco was the Harper Lee release of Watchman. It did absolutely nothing but sully her own bigger than life characters and story.

@@MrTsiolkovsky I'm a Harper fan and I understand. ICB was very much Truman's book, just as To Kill a Mockingbird was very much Lee's. Neither could have written the other's book. Capote was a wonderful stylist, though in my opinion, his best works were Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Grass Harp. Only Capote could have created a character like Holly Golightly, maybe because she was Truman in a female form. And only Lee could have told a story or created characters like those in Mockingbird.

Hi Age of Vintage, How are you? Another great in insight into the brilliant Harper Lee & Truman Capote. I honestly believe that Harper Lee did write To Kill a Mockingbird & not Truman Capote. As Harper became catapulted into the Spotlight on the release of the now infamous book, Capote became eaten away with jealousy that she had written a best selling book, whilst he was still toiling away. I think they became estranged as Capote probably read a chapter or two of Harper's book, & knew she was on to a winner. I don't think for a minute that Capote wrote it for her, as he became so jealous over her sucess he wouldn't have been able to hold it back & deny he was the real author. Such a shame he took that path & became estranged from her, jealousy play's a terrible part in some people's lives that it consumes them, & they can't let it go. The picture coming from the book became a masterpiece earning to Gregory Peck an Academy Award and Robert Duvall made his acting debut in it. Capote disliked Audrey Hepburn and preferred Miss M.M. for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Hard to imagine when we know how iconic this film became and the strong Audrey image ’s associated to it.

This was going well, and then the narrator said something about people not knowing Harper Lee was a female. He then proceeds to call her "Nelly" Harper Lee. It was Nelle Pronounced "Nell" Harper Lee. Don't say how ignorant people are about not knowing that Harper Lee was a woman, and then pronounce her name incorrectly. She used "Harper" because she thought people would pronounce "Nelle" as "Nelly". Apparently the people doing factual videos on her are getting her name wrong. How correct she was about "Nelle".

The Narrator said Capote never wrote anolther Novel aftder "in Cold Blood." I thought that Capote wrote- Breakfast at Tiffnany's. Can someone please clarify this? The fact that she never wrote another novel or as far as I know even another Short Story makes one wonder if Truman at least helped her write- To Kill a Mockingbir, if not wrote a good part of it.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S was written years before ICB. It was published in 1958. And you have to be daft to believe that someone with an ego like Truman's- an ego as bloated and diseased as his liver- would have let Lee walk off with the 1961 Pulitizer Prize for Fiction if he'd had the tiniest thing to do with writing her novel. If he'd even done a line edit on one paragraph, he would have tried to take credit for the whole thing. He was MADLY jealous of her for winning the Pulitzer, a prize he coveted but never won, and his jealousy of her wrecked their friendship.

HL wrote 2 books and lived to 90, 2nd book is really a draft for the "masterpiece". Who was her editor? Much revision went into Watchman to make it an absurdly good tale. HL shunned all publicity, her right to do so, of course. But most artists are very proud of their accomplishments. It does not mean TC wrote TKAMB, but no, i don't think HL wrote it, not w/o lots of help. If I'm wrong, I beg forgiveness from her and her fans.

How can anyone believe that someone as egotistical, jealousy-prone, self-aggrandizing, and greedy for acclaim as Capote would let Lee walk away with the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a prize he coveted and never won if he'd had the tiniest thing to do with producing that novel? If he'd made even the most insignificant contribution, he'd have tried to cop credit for the whole thing, for it is documented that he was insanely jealous of her for having won the prize, and he never forgave her. Yes, it was his last full-length novel. IN COLD BLOOD and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S , which he published in 1958, well before ICB, were not only his greatest works but the only full length novels he wrote. ANSWERED PRAYERS doesn't count because the full-length manuscript has never been found and most likely does not exist. He was so dispirited by the reception that "La Cote Basque" received (like, what did he expect?), that he stopped working on it.

How on Earth can you believe that someone as egotistical, self-aggrandizing, inherently deceitful, and hungry for applause as Capote would let Harper Lee walk off with a Pulitzer Prize if he'd had anything to do with producing her book? That guy's ego was even more bloated and diseased than his liver, and he was madly jealous of Lee for having won a Pulitzer, a prize he coveted and never won. You had better believe that if he had so much as done a line edit of the top page, he'd have tried to cop credit for the whole thing. His jealousy of her success, and his likely recognition that her book was better than anything he ever wrote, pretty much ended their friendship.
@chicagonorthcoast

Please, you cannot seriously believe that Capote had the first thing to do with Lee's novel. There is no way that the egotistical, deceitful, self-aggrandizing Capote would have permitted Lee to walk away with a Pulitzer prize for that novel if he'd had anything to do with writing it. If he'd so much as edited a page, he'd try to claim credit for the whole thing. It's known that he was insanely jealous of her for winning it as nothing he wrote had ever won a major literary prize, and his jealousy of her success caused a breach in their friendship. Lee was also not the type of person who would have withheld credit from Capote. On the other hand, he never gave her credit for the copious assistance she rendered him when they were out in Kansas together researching ICB. He couldn't have gotten to first base with the denizens of Finney County without her, for they were instantly alienated by him while being charmed by her warmth and directness. People, in particular people close to the Clutters like Nancy's best friend, told her things they would never have told him, like a verbatim account of the last phone conversation between Susan and Nancy. Then there were all the copious notes Lee took, while Truman claimed not the need to take notes. Yet he didn't even include Lee in his acknowledgments.
