Tom Davis Dog Training

Күн бұрын

Aggressive dog training and behavior modification training can be challenging. This Doberman attacks dog trainer Tom Davis out of frustration and built up stimulation. Leo is a sweet dog and needs help addressing his aggression issues, this process should be done only by a trained professional. Leo and his owner left with a lot if skills and knowledge about how to manage and handle these situations now. Sometimes dog's behavior cannot be completely modified and changed and it's unfair to assume so. However all dogs and their owners can grow and gain the knowledge and skills to become less stressed and more controlled.

@@PoloWolf47 absolutely not. The muzzle deters people from coming close to you creating less triggers in your dog. If your dog is reactive for their well being and the well-being of others wearing a muzzle is safe and the smartest thing to do. A muzzle doesn’t mean the dog is bad or that an owner is incapable of training. It means that the dog has some reactivity issues and the world is a scary place. The muzzle allows them to experience the world safely and lets them know it’s not all bad. As for the owner it shows that the owner is willing to work those issues he respects his dog and is trying to teach his dog that the world isn’t scary. We need to stop having negative stereotypes against muzzles.

@@PoloWolf47 I muzzle should be a perfect fit for a dog. Big enough to drink water with and take treats but not too big that it’ll bite a person or another animal. Dogs are trained and conditioned to build a good relationship with their muzzle. It takes time to desensitize a dog to a muzzle. Once the dog correlates the muzzle with good positive things they should have zero issue with it and should actually come to like it. You're way off the mark. You're looking at a human as a dog. The trainer was in danger, him saying "come take him" repeatedly was him trying to convey a sense of urgency. The human understands what the words "come take him" mean, so it doesn't really matter how many times he's saying it. When you repeat a command like that to a dog they don't understand what you want from them.

I was a temperament tester for a Boxer rescue group a few years ago. Everything this guy teaches is spot on. Every dog with so called "issues" is a puzzle and very unique. You have to study the behavior very carefuly to discover what the dog needs. I came across a rescue that was considered not rehomable. The foster couple, bless thier hearts had given up and were ready to let him be put down. Our paths crossed at a meet put on by the rescue. They kept him well away from everyone out of justified fear. I was very interested in meeting this dog. They were right, he would turn instantly. He was also a BIG boy. it only took 5 minutes ti figure out his trigger by paying attention to his reactions. Unfortunately I did not get to work with him but the fosters were able to gain some well deserved insight as to what was going to be needed to get him back to center. The OP is the kind of trainer and guide all others in the business should strive to be. focused, attentive and decisive. Thats how we get pups in bad head space back to being happy and attentive.

This video really was a help to my wife, our pup and myself. There's a dog on our dead-end street that frenetically runs up and down his e-fence line near the road. Our dog picks up on the energy and becomes reactive, turning on us with teeth bared. We have been avoiding the dog by walking along the highway to get back home. Last night we took a wider berth around the frantic dog and cut across a neighbour's lawn, still in sight of the wild dog. Our girl still noticed the dog but wasn't reactive. Thanks for the video, problem solved. We'll move a bit closer daily and watch our girl's reaction.

He has a lot of other videos that go over how to walk a dog. Also he usually uses some type of slip lead, either the collar is a slipknot /pronge collar, or he uses a slip lead. A slip lead is a great tool for training a dog pressure/release in a short time frame. He also has some videos where he shows getting an aggresive dog out of a kennel and gets the slip lead on in the process without putting himself in danger. We used to do it like a rabbit trapper- have the door closed with just enough space for the dog to get his nose out, hang the loop of the slip lead in a big loop so when he steps out his nose goes through it and right as he gets his head out you pull up to tighten the lead/slipknot

I would teach people about proper fitted muzzles and the right ones. Baskerville's are not bite proof and don't allow proper pant room. Dean and Tyler, Leerburgh and Jafco are much better. The dog should also be able to do a full pant and be able to yawn, so your dog hypothetically shpuld be able to hold a tennis ball in its mouth

FINALLY. A video I can really relate to. I have a spayed, four-year-old 112 pound European Doberman. She’s of course a tank of a dog and when she becomes dog aggressive it becomes a huge problem. A huge problem for several reasons: giving Dobermans a bad rep, potentially endangering other dogs, and potentially putting herself in danger if she goes after the wrong dog. I’m really gonna buckle down and work on her leash training and hopefully will be back with good results. Fingers crossed.

Tom, I guess that you don't want to show all your handling in some situations . But people should see how you stopped+ corrected the dog after his atack, and after a bite attempt without a muzzle. People must learn from it. There is no problem with necessary firm correction -thats routine. Btw. I am prof.dogtrainer, thats why I ask you not to cut most important frames out of the footage.

He clearly panicked. Watching him moving away while dog is lunging at him didn’t seem right… also, repeating “take him now” seemed like he is under a lot of stress, caused the dog to attack unstable energy again… I am ok with him still learning his ways and techniques, but maybe start with smaller dogs, less aggressive cases…

Without the prong collar the redirect / bite will be less or not at all. Building trust with Dobe takes more than a few minutes of playing tug. Muzzle should have been on from start when there is history of biting. To the believer of strong correction/punishment: Why set the dog up for hard strong corrections when you are the one responsible for the redirect happening to this degree? Failed logic. Sadistic even. Try wearing a prong collar yourself and have someone lead you past something which sets off your fight/flight mode..

I think he was surprised to find out neither of them came near him, or reaacted to him at all. which was a great lesson for him to learn. but yeah - id still never handle that dog without a muzzle cuz damn.

Hi, I just saw this video and I recently purchased a 3-year-old female Doberman that is exactly like this dog. She gets so focused she will turn on me too. I have had Dobermans for 40 years and never had one like this. I have been so lost on how to redirect her. She attacks all other dogs, especially small dogs, cats, and people. It's like you said she seems to think she has to attack before they do to get her point across first. once she is focused in she blocks out anyone or anything around her and it's hard to break her concentration. I keep her isolated and that's not good for her but now I have a place to start with her since I saw your video. Thank You

Learning from the mistakes of others has been just as effective as the direct tips and lessons themselves. I ALWAYS correct while commanding, I had no idea this was a problem but in hindsight makes a lot of sense. If I punish you everytime I say sit, why would you want to? Learning to give the dog time to think and make a decision has drastically changed her level obedience. Not pulling on the lead while saying heel has also had huge benefit. No bad dogs

I understand what you're saying but don't stand your ground and get mauled to shit, that's something you can do when in a bite suit or the dog is muzzled, on a pole etc waiting out the attack and then scale back the hardware. It's not about not being a pussy it's not bleeding out so you can actually stand your ground and not be dead on the ground. The guy is man enough to show what happens when you're not equipped and when intervention is needed to avoid dumb accidents that don't need to happen. He also needed to pull himself back into a more suitable state of mind before continuing. My Doberman gets aggressive like that when I tell him he can't have whatever it is he picks up while on a walk. He'll step in front of me to cut me off and start showing teeth. If he sees something he wants to chase, and starts barking and pulling.....when I hold him back, he comes at me. He also growls and tries to nip me when I put his food bowl down at feeding time and leave the kitchen. He just turned 2 in Nov. 2020 and has never shown aggression towards other people or dogs he sees while out on walks. He wants to play. But being a Doberman, and having the reputation that they do, most people don't want their dog near him.

I think it's a big mistake to train this anxious/frustrated/reactive dog in a situation with more distraction than 1. the new environment (= the training facilities) 2. being handled by another person - a stranger. To be honest you set this up to be a failure instead of setting it up so you and the dog could succeed. To ask something of this dog when he's worked up (suspicious/anxious/frustrated/fearful) due to that other dog is basically asking for him to redirect - and it's very unfair, in my opinion. It's like asking a crying or overstimulated 5 year old to say what 2+2+1 is or have them calmly tell you about their day in the middle of a screaming fit. I hope you get my point here! You should definitely help this dog to "redirect" and do something else instead, but dogs can't do that and properly learn if you don't give them a fair chance - which means setting up the situation/environment right. It's like, I see what you're trying to do but you haven't entirely thought it through. "Let's just bring in another dog and see how it goes!" Well, YOU might be able to handle it - but how about the dog? You're not giving him a fair chance to make it.
@BinaaBabby
@BinaaBabby 3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. So many instances where he was trying to set the dog up for failure rather then gaining his trust. Work on obedience and then start slowly introducing other dogs and new environments. It's a trend he repetitively does to showcase how "aggressive the dog is", when he's heightening these behaviors for views or for the end result to seem exaggerated and extreme. Nothing was taught here, the dog was worn out till he was too exhausted and nervous to care. I don't trust or respect any trainer who repeatedly does stuff that is not in the benefit of the animal and is strictly for views.
