TURN ON CLOSED CAPTIONS ‘Aghori: Holy Men of The Dead’ is a short documentary about young travelers, Dakota, Jar and Kyle on a spiritual pilgrimage through India where he learns about a group of cremation dwelling tantrics that live in the outskirts of Hindu society called The Aghori. The Aghori do post-mortem rituals and cover themselves in the ash of the dead. In Sanksrit, Ghor means that which is terrible, and Aghor means that which is beyond terrible. The path of the Aghori is to take that which is naturally considered scary or taboo and transmute it into the divine substance of God, or Shiva.

What I learnt about my extended time in Varanasi is that true Aghori’s will not be sitting in the middle of the street or inviting you to ceremony’s, you will hardly be able to get near them. They have people with them that will move you on but if you look in the shadows, you will see them. Respect they want their privacy, they are not there to practice their beliefs for a show and move on. The fake Aghori’s will be doing this for the tourists along with the fake Sadhu’s. Varanasi is full of them. Watching the people in India, westerners are so desperate for their unique spiritual or cultural encounter, they will believe anything for what they are chasing. People need to chill, India will gift you what you need at the time even if it is not what you are seeking.

The traditions of the Aghoris have been continuing since the Stone Age. The rituals, the sounds, the mantra that you witness at the ghats of Varanasi were created when there were no pharaohs in Egypt and no kings or senators in Rome. Much more than the rituals it would be interesting to learn the stories about the ancient world that these Sadhus have preserved through oral traditions.

I went to Varanasi many years ago and watching this video it is so amazing that the surreal, dream-like quality of that place is apparent even in video. It is an incredibly powerful experience being there, it is like being in a dream or a different dimension of reality. There is no time, no order except that which nature defines. After a few hours it changes you and this strange, alien quality starts to bubble up from your unconscious. It’s hyper-reality, like that sense of extreme familiarity or homecoming you sometimes experience on a trip except you’re not on drugs you’re just alive in a place that offers no artificial filters of any kind. It’s terrifying and beautiful and I really hope I can someday return before I die.

You missed the whole point of aghori. Ghor means terrible, Aghori means one who is beyond terrible. So terrible that terrible doesn't touch him. They are trying to be so terrible, that they can take out terrible diseases and terrible emotions out of people through their powers. For betterment of others they are taking all of the terrible upon themselves. That's what Aghori is.

I usually don't leave comments on KZfaq, but I sincerely appreciate your videos! The documentary type stuff really suits you and I can't wait for more, I'm addicted LOL. My eyes were glued to the screen for this one, the people you spoke to were so open and wonderful. Offered a nice perspective into a vastly different environment, culture, and belief system. For the people living there it's just a regular occurrence, and so natural, to see all those corpses being openly carried to be cleansed and burnt in a ritual! So cool.
