Hi Sharon If you pour some vinegar into a glass jar and add the steel wool and leave it until it dissolves, you will get a much darker result. I am in love with the rusty result you achieved by laying the steel wool on top. Yay new experiments to try. Very good information. I used the skinny stir sticks in the last dollhouse I made. The size is perfect, but finding them was a challenge. I ended up recruiting a couple of friends who went to Starbucks daily to pick up a few extra sticks when they got coffee and I did the same. Fortunately it wasn’t a very big dollhouse. Now I’m looking for ways to age the wood for a barn.

Nice tutorial on how to age wood for dioramas. I'm definitely going to try this. I'm planning on doing the method of leaving the stir sticks under the steel wool and vinegar over night.

I never knew how vinegar would actually "stain" wood .... Because of the colors you were able to attain by just placing the vinegar - soaked steel wool on top of the sticks, that has to be my favorite.method you used. TY for sharing your techniques and knowledge with us.

I know this is an old post, but try adding some hydrogen peroxide to the vinegar. If you like the rust color. The peroxide speeds the rusting process. I sometimes age things by painting with iron paint ans then rusting it.

What percentage of vinegar? The grocery store carries different acid percentage even in white....

Instead of brushing the vinegar on or putting a bunch of sticks in it you can make the whole thing and put it in if u wanna make the process go quicker

Gah, I can't find fine steel wool that doesn't have "added soap" >.< I am going to try it with the thick steel scourers!

add peroxide to the vinegar and steel wool and you have instant real rust paint

Hi Sharon, this is really interesting & useful, thanks for sharing. When you suggested that us sensitive types should prob use gloves, I got to wondering about the icky smell you mentioned too & wondered 'Could that also be an irritant?' So I found this education forum where they're talking about the science of adding vinegar to steel wool, (it's a little dry, but interesting if you're a nerd like me) assist.asta.edu.au/print/3684 if you're interested. Apparently that icky smell is chemically icky too (but I'd think only in tiny amounts) - so good ventilation would be a good idea for us sensitive types, too. Hope you're keeping well :)

that was an awsome video👍 I need to age a few tiny crates for a diorama and this should work. i need much smaller amounts of stain so hopefully it won't stink up the place🤣
