When my cat was a kitten, I made a point to say “ow” when she would play bite even the tiniest bit hard, but my husband would play a bit more aggressively (because kitten teeth don’t hurt). But now that she’s big, she’s gentle with me 90% of the time, but much tougher with my husband! It’s definitely worth it to teach them young.

Also if they are getting “bitey”, I play with them with something else between them and my hand, like a squishy/soft toy that they can bite and kick as much as they want.

Also, sometimes it's a good idea to keep your cat away from you for 10 minutes so that they learn to settle and then they come back really nice.

This is the best video on dealing with play aggression I've watched and the only one that talks about negative punishment (removing a pleasant stimulant or something they want) and signaling they have hurt you (with a soft cry or whimper). Another Vlogger actually suggested people hiss at their cat. Don't do that. But just wanted to point out some other vloggers give poor advice and kudos to this video that really draws from the science-based findings of BF Skinner.

Adopted my cat from a shelter when he was 10 weeks old! He was kept separate from other cats because he didn’t have all his vaccinations yet, so he might not have had the opportunity to learn to curb his play aggression from his littermates/other cats… He is the sweetest lap cat during nap time but can be somewhat aggressive with biting and scratching during play time, so I’m hoping these tips will work. Thank you for sharing!

We got Zoey when she was 4 mos from a shelter. She was in an area with a few other kittens but I don't think they were her litter mates. She only gets bitey when she's wanting attention. She'll come up to us and roll around on our feet and then grab our legs and bite. She's never been like this when we play with her. Her personality has steadily evolved and she is a loving, playful and adventuresome kitty. I've followed your videos to clicker train her and it's awesomely easy and creates a great bond. Thanks for your videos we have an adventure cat. We travel alot so we have to take her with us. She is trained with the harness too, also thanks to your videos. Oh and now she's playing fetch, which she has taught us we didn't train her to do that! She's now 6 mos old.

Cosmo cat was a kitten when I rescued him from a chicken factory. I took him to the vet and they said he was 10-12 weeks old. He used to play rough and bite but we've been working on positive reinforcement, clicker training and playing with toys. He's come a long way but I still wonder how long he was out in the wild on his own before he found me 😿

My cat was only 4 weeks when we rescued her 😕 her mom was very sick and could not feed or take care of her anymore so me and my partner took care of her, bottle feed her and thought her how to eat solid foods 🥰 She is one and a half now and I definitely think she had a difficult time learning some things because her family never taught her 😕 but she almost never bites hard anymore! When she is super hyper and starts biting we just put her on the flor (because she is usually on our laps when this happens) and let her relax until she comes back calmer 😊 and when she does not want to be petted we just have to accept that no means no!

Thank you so much for this video!!!! I think my Chantilly-Tiffany was about 8 weeks old when I got her. The woman that gave her to me said she got her when she was 6 weeks old. I know my baby didn't stay with her mom or litter mates long enough because she still has the need to suck and she gets very aggressive with play. I can tell she tries not to bite to hard, but often still bites too hard.

@@OutdoorBengal After several months of working with my cat to not bite, negative consequences did not work for us. I thought about how her bio-mom might react to a painful bite, so I yowl loudly (like a cat) when she bites. She stops immediately, looks at me like I've lost my mind, gives me a little lick and walks away. It took months for her to stop biting me but now she rarely does and it's usually when I pick her up and she doesn't want to be held.

We just adopted a kitten and she's about 3 months old. The foster mom told us that she scratches and bites a lot--so true! I have had cats forever, but never a kitten like this. All she does is attack us. We bought tons of toys for her, including tunnels, moving animal toys, interactive toys, two huge cat trees up to the ceiling, and play with her constantly. We actually got her as a companion cat for our cat that is 3 years old. Nothing has worked with the kitten. She will not stop scratching or biting. Thank you for the advice! New subbie :)

So true, I had two orange tabby brothers and when they were young and ‘wrestling’ if one bit the other too hard the bit one would squawk so I would call the biters name and they would stop and look at me, then I would say ‘Kisses!’ One of the brothers would give one last hard bite then leave his brother alone… the other would start giving his brother kisses… that was their personality in a nutshell!

1st cat was 7 when we adopted him, beautiful, scared and not an attack cat, unfortunately died of cancer at 12. 2nd cat adopted us, she never attacked either, and once again this beautiful girl died of breast cancer, about 8 years old. 3 rd cat was abandoned, at least 14 years old now. We got her and then found out she has a lung tumour.. still alive but we are her respite carers now. And last cat found us. we guess about 2, very much a kitten but a very large cat. He has bitten me 4 times and very hard, antibiotics needed! He is very playful aggressive at times, other times , like now sound asleep next to me.

my cat was previously owned by a friend who gave him to me. he was taken way too early, he was only 6 weeks old when my friend adopted him. he never learned how to socialize or play since this person didnt have the time to properly train him not to bite or be aggressive. now he just doesnt respond to anything, positive or negative reinforcement, he just falls into the same habit of biting and aggression. running out of answers, honestly. edit: i love the little dude with all my heart but honestly it's hard to not get frustrated. if i leave the room, he just follows me to keep attacking.

Omg this video is perfect timing. I brought the kitten home at three months and I had my kitten for nearly two months he has been a sweety this whole time. Only very few occasion he want to be let down from us holding him he would put his teeth against my arm us scared of get bitten we would obviously let go of him. But recent two three days he suddenly so interested in wrestling with my feet and and always bite my feet it can hurt too. And night time he use to only pounce a bit but now he pounce on me plus bite. Got me flinched once when he pounced to my face and I felt his teeth on my neck. Though I wasn’t hurt it still scared me remind me of how lion hunt so I’m scared to sleep with him…

My Riny had about 8 weeks. My kitty doesn't bit me while playing... But at bed time, she jumps around attacking my legs, feet, over the sheets, le llama la atención en movimiento debajo de la sábanas... What I'm doing is taking her out of the bed every time she "plays" like that, it takes me 3 or 4 times until she stops... I don't know if I'm doing it ok or there is another better way 😞

Where I’m from it’s unfortunately common for cats to be adopted as early as 8 weeks. My Cat is 1.5 years now. He bites really hard. I was on the brink of fainting from the shock at one point. 3 instances he bites me - bored play. - he wants outside; but I usually need to leave to work or the weather is not desirable. - when I’m near the kitchen sink; he will circle me, I believe he is asking for wet food. If I don’t give it he will bite me Hard on the back of my calf. All are Hard bites. I would love some guidance how to help him learn it’s TOO intense of a bite

My Bengal kitten was just over 11 weeks old when she came home with me, which I know was a little early, but could not be avoided. She had not learnt to control her claws or bite force for play! So my hands and arms were covered in scratches! I started with what my grandmother taught me when I was a child. If she hurts, then yelp (say ouch or similar in a high pitched voice) and stop playing and this worked well. within a few days, she was much more gentle and now if she accidentally get a bit carried away on occasion bites too hard or something, I do the same and she stops immediately and licks it better. The thing I'm still struggling with is that she still loves to catch my feet and curl herself around them so bite and bunny kick! She is being more gentle with that, but not enough.

I recognise my foster kitten in the poor socialization box. We couldn't save mama and the rest of her litter so she was all alone and only one month old when they gave her to me. And of course she doesn't know how to play because she was separated from her litter too early so she bites and scratches. I've been looking for another kitten to foster so she can have a companion but for now I have to try and teach her myself. It's not easy, and I worry about having trouble finding her forever home.

My recent cats have all been pedigrees (including a half-Bengal 😀), and they've been adopted either as adults or as 13-week-old kittens, i.e. after their initial course of vaccinations (as required in the UK by the GFFC). I will definitely be enforcing the "no hands or feet" rule more strictly with the next two, though, as it's no fun being woken by having your toes attacked where they poke out of the duvet!

I just got a kitten 3 months old and he’s so gentle and sweet towards me but as soon as the feather toy comes out he becomes vicious. I’m not sure whether to just remove the toy or not to stop the behavior. In that state I tried to pick him up once to calm him and he was growling at me. I wasn’t sure what to do but after seeing this video I’ll just wait until his hunter vibes settle. When I remove the feather toy he becomes agitated and aggressive. After I let him attack the feather he gets to a calmer state faster. It’s very scary to see such a cute kitty become ruthless mini lion. But I’ll follow your advice and let him interact with the toy until he’s calm.

I rescued my cat when she was only 8 weeks old. An old lady had abandoned her along with three other kittens near my friend’s apartment complex. When we got there she was the only one we found.

Awwww... some people are so mean! I'm so glad you found her. Does she display any type of misbehavior because of early removal from her family?

@@OutdoorBengal I’d say yes. As a kitten she was kind of hyperactive and had a hard time understanding that hands aren’t toys, but after I introduced her to my dad’s older cat, she became much calmer. As for the bittings, they gradually stopped as she grew up. She’s 6 months old now ☺️

I got my kitten at a little past 4 months old. She grew up with her siblings and plenty of human interaction, so she is extremely tolerant and well behaved. (Except for when she has the zoomies- then all bets are off) I love the butt wiggle right before they pounce!

could you make a video on how to stop your cat from jumping on kitchen top when you are not looking and spoiling food if there is one, its a constant headake for my family if they know the cats alone in the kitchen and no ones looking, i did train her before yet leaving for college left its mark, it never came to this before

My cat is not play aggressive but very food overstimulated. How to train my cat? She bit me today when I was trying to teach her how to get on my shoulder. She gets really riled up when I give her the treats and today she but my middle finger and drew blood. She is so sweet overall but her food overstimulation makes training so hard. Pls help.

I took mine home at 2 months old because she was hiding in the loft from my parent's dogs and she was always in distress, spending her time alone without her mother. She bites very gently but always out of nowhere and unprovoked, she bites my face and hand when I sleep. I did not take her for selfish reasons but because she was in poor condition and emaciated.

I adopted a 4 months old kitten who was left behind my door by some "kind" person. He already didn't like being held. Now he tolerates this for 1 minute and then bites me a little to be released. I think I unintentionally teached him to bite me to stop me from petting him when he doesn't want to be petted. But that's okay, I reckon he has a right to set his boundaries) He sometimes bites wery hard when we play, so I'll try to fix this as you tought us in this video) Thanks a lot!

Amazing! That's a topic for another video but you can anticipate biting by looking at other body language that is more subtle. When the tail starts to twitch think about stopping the petting. When your cat starts wagging the tail, abort mission, attack is coming! :) Good Luck!

1:58 hey, so her mom abandond her for some reason and she was like 3 to 4 week old and kids where kicking and hurting her so just grabbed her and took care of her, she is so cute but as you said doesn't know how to play, it dosen't hurt much now but when she grow up and do the same her fangs might hurt me or other people and i know she is playing cus she starts coming to my hand and attacking and she shows the belly which means she is not threathend but her tail sometimes is stiff like and antena and her hair on tail and body looks like goosebumps which is state of alarm for cats (i guess) so i am a bit worried... BTW you are so good at what you do man i subscribed and watched two of yur other video's, your cat also REALLY loves you :) Edit: BTW iwedon't have a clicker in our country... can i snap my finger instead or use a Lighter to make the sound?? any alternative?

Hi I bought a kitten when he is 4 weeks old, when ever he plays he bites our feet and hands. Now he is 7 weeks old but still he is doing the same thing. We gave toy to play with. He is playing very aggressive with that toy like bitting. We can’t keep our leg in the floor while sitting in the sofa. He run fast to us and bit our feet. There is any advance to stop him bitting

Thank you so much for your note. I wish I had more time to offer content in other languages. I might, in the future, try to hire someone to create subtitles for my videos but at the moment I don't have the money or the bandwidth. Summarizing, the video says: - Do not let your cat trigger play time with you using "play aggression" - Try to innitiate play time with your cat yourself, to prevent them from "attacking" - When they use play aggression, complain and stop interacting with them, as if you got hurt Good luck!

Looks like your kitten is bored. Does the biting come with hissing or growling or it's more like jumping on your ankles? If it's the latter, your cat might need more stimulation. We can work together on your situation if you need more help: www.outdoorbengal.com/products/correcting-cat-behaviors
