Agricola is a 10 for me too! (Though painful introducing new players, and has to be done carefully) Thinking of getting Farmers of the Moor. Thoughts?

We absolutely love Farmers of the Moor, and it is our preferred way to play. Some reasons include: - Variable starting farm layouts with forest and moor tiles lead to more unique farms from game to game. - The bonus action cards add a new tension of taking them versus the first pick of actions on the board, but also can take some pressure off by allowing you to gain things without spending a worker. - New Major and Minor improvements add variety and lean into new systems like the forest and moor tiles (we like just shuffling all cards we have together). - Requirement to heat your home based on the number of rooms helps slightly slow down those who get to family growth first, it feels like that aspect of the game is slightly less on rails. And while this requirement sounds like it makes the game harder, it is balanced by the bonus actions (e.g. can fell your forest trees for wood) and the fact that you can choose to leave moor and forest tiles to help fill negative spaces on your farm. So obviously a big recommendation from us haha. It does add a little game length and who knows how balanced it is to throw everything together, but neither point bothers us. We won't use it when introducing new players, but otherwise we pretty much always include it. -Ryan

Agricola is definitely Uwe's magnum opus. None of his other games even come close.

Could you tell me a bit about farmers of the moor?

Short answer is that we love it, and it's our preferred way to play with experienced players. A few things we like about it: - Variable starting setups with arrangements of moor and forest tiles that really make everyone's farms develop differently from game to game. - Requirement to heat your home that makes it slightly harder to rush a family growth strategy, but also doesn't feel too difficult since the moor/forest tiles and bonus actions give you ways to get more fuel/wood. - Bonus actions add a really interesting decision of whether to take them to get rewards while saving a worker, but at the expense of first pick of the board actions. They also can allow more flexibility because you might be able to save a worker by covering something with a bonus action, freeing up an extra action. - Horses are a nice addition as the one thing that doesn't cap in scoring, introducing some fun opportunities for big points. - Tons of minor improvements that integrate with the new systems and provide more variety in the strategies you assemble from your hand of cards. It probably adds a little extra play time and I would only use it with experienced Agricola players, but for us it is one of our favorite expansions for any game. -Ryan

@@RollsInTheFamily Hey Ryan, thank you so much! Sometimes it is really hard to get an idea about a game or an expansion since I think it needs not justthe right inforamtion but also I need the right person to share his view with me. I feel you two are very much on a weave lenth with me so your channel is by far the most helpful KZfaq source about games. Thank you so much for your help! Seems like I order farmers of the moor Best wishes from Germany Max

That was very interesting. I never played Agricola but A Feast for Odin (especially with the Norwegians) is me and my wife's favorite game. How would you compare the two? There is definitely less hunger pressure in Odin.
@RollsInTheFamily

Yeah, we also really enjoy A Feast for Odin + Norwegians, but it is kind of a different beast. A Feast for Odin is much more of a sandbox where it is kind of arbitrary which path you choose to take in any given game, whereas in Agricola the initial hand of cards really presents a puzzle and a lot of direction on how to approach the game. Cards in a Feast for Odin feel more like little nudges than exciting powers that would really drive your strategy, and since they are acquired throughout the game you aren't really able to plan as much up front. There is also a lot less tension in A Feast for Odin and it is more forgiving in terms of feeding your people. But it also has a very different spatial puzzle with the polyomino pieces. For us, Agricola gets the edge mostly because of how the hand of cards is so exciting and makes every game so unique, along with us enjoying the tension and how it is so satisfying to pull things off. -Ryan

@@RollsInTheFamily Thanks Ryan that was quick and thorough. Sounds like I could really love it while my wife probably would be stumped at first. She doesn't enjoy games where she has to read many cards with different abilities. In Odin it's not too bad but she ignored occupations for the first twenty or so games. I will hunt down a copy and get her to try it though. It sounds very cool.

long setup? not with a decent insert

I think most of that setup time for us comes from the shuffling of all of the occupations and minor improvements before dealing out hands. I am sure an insert would be nice!! -Daniel

I also solved setup time with my customized insert. Granted, I only play the base game.
