Agrippa's 1533 Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the most classic work on the philosophy of magic in the western world. In a previous episode, we explored his occult philosophy of language, this week I turn to his occult philosophy of mathematics: the very bridge between the physical and celestial worlds. For Agrippa, turning to the purely formal world of mathematics and numbers, we discover the very inner logic of the divine on our journey towards spiritual reunification with just that primordial unity of divinity. Let's deep dive into the magic of harmony, proportion, numerals, sacred geometry and music - the systems of correspondence at the heart of modern magic and esotericism !

The concept of mathematics being the cornerstone of prophecy develops a deeper layer to it when you consider the modern concept of data modeling: predicting the future by mathematically modeling recurring patterns of dynamic systems to predict future events.

Unfortunately modelling is being used to further corporate/personal agendas rather than the betterment of mankind and connection to the Divine . Too many of us are caught in these dark magic webs.

@@earthdance11 That's not the fault of the techniques themselves. They're just a tool. Nor are those using them for personal gain capable of looking at the larger scope beyond the petty social dynamics they hope to master and are regularly blindsided by events they cannot predict. Garbage in, garbage out.

i am thinking as a laymen non educated in any of this it is really an interesting concept that king Solomon's work is connected to Nikola Tesla but recent work from Eric Weinstein’s seems to prove that there is a bigger connection to everything happening around us. feel like there is something to do deeply with physic just not on a level we are familiar with because of people like Einstein everyday i just get more curious and want to learn more need to understand the 3.6.9.12 are somehow the keys to the universe

The figure starting at 13:07 seems to represent various partitions of the numbers 4 through 8, the number of partitions corresponding to the binomial coefficients in the fifth row of Pascal's triangle (corresponding to the coefficients of (1+x)^4): 1, 4, 6, 4, 1, i.e., there is one triangle with digits that sum to 4, four that sum to 5, six that sum to 6, four that sum to 7, and one that sums to 8. This is such a nice pattern that I doubt it appears by chance, though I can't find any other order to the arrangement.

Agrippa is examining the occult significance of the geometric figure you're pondering. While your insight about Pascal's Triangle is fascinating and I think you could be onto soon something, this particular geometric figure is a classic Geomantic Astrological Chart, where the triangles represent Astrological houses and forces at play. With that in mind, deciphering this image is much easier, as the body parts enclosed in a particular triangle assume the Astrological significance of the corresponding occult forces. Or at least, that's how it immediately made sense to me. I have ideas on the numerological significance of the position of the Arabic numerals, as well, but it's a work-in-progress, haha. Best wishes! ✨

Math as a bridge to the realm of time and matter. However improbable, I would love to hear a conversation between Justin and theoretical physicist Lee Slomin. How great it would be to hear a scholarly conversation on the old and new esoteric thoughts on the nature of reality in time and space. The language and context by which modern science seeks to explain the reality of time space would be ever richer if they could get over their allergic reaction to these committed thinkers in our past. Keep the baby, throw out the old bath water, and keep building better thoughts on the deepest questions. Thank you as always Justin. Great episode! Reminds me very much of Tolkien's origin stories of Middle Earth, probably inspired by genuine surviving myths and even in living language (Hebrew). That the Divine hummed or sang or spoke creation into existence. That mathematics manifests in sacred geometry and that resonance (vibration, language, music) is one aspect of sacred geometry. And that music has long helped to shift human consciousness. That the Greek letter pi produces the circle, that the cyclical zodiac of 12 (sometimes 13) signs precesses along a recognizable ecliptic plane, 1 degree akin to 72 years (now a common human life span) and that the 365 day year, with so many calendrical variations simplifying it to 360 days, makes it a model of the 360 degree circle. Also, that the Greek letter phi shows up so ubiquitously in nature and geometry. The great medieval cathedrals being the architectural embodiment of such principles, carrying on the legacy of great Temple construction akin to Solomon's Temple and his use of supernatural means of constructing it. Was his ring or the Shamir an earlier version of the philosopher's stone, an item or substance or idea capable of transmutation? The Shamir supposedly could cut through stone, iron and diamond... and was it achieved through resonance? The more science reveals the imperceptible, the more Magick proves very real. If Agrippa had known what we know now, I wonder what he'd be able to see. Like if he knew that Saturn sings a song-- 'Voyager Rings of Saturn' on KZfaq. Super eerie! And Tool is a spiritual experience. Don't drive and listen to Tool for sure. But jokes aside, super excited to hear your commentary on the new translation!! Your work on Agrippa (all your work, really) has made him so much more enlightening for myself than I'd ever be able to achieve on my own. Thank you!

Tolkien had such great imagination and detail into his work I often wonder if his take on the topic of creation isn’t much different from reality and creation of our world. That guy was pure genius.Truly Fascinating stuff ! Enjoyed reading your insightful comment 👏 I wondered if anyone else would draw the same conclusions/connection to his work as I was getting out of it . Then again I’m just beginning to learn about Esoteric Philosophy so it’s possible I’ve got no clue what I’m saying and everyone agrees? Lol idk and Tool ?! I have argued similarly for the use and necessity of an understanding of physics in occult and magical practices. When you go to turn on the light switch , there is no assumption that it will not cause the bulb to illuminate. It is understood, consistent, and repeatable. Not so with magic wherein faith and so much goes in and you can wipe off a failed experiment for any number of reasons. If magic can cause any meaningful change in reality, this means some kind of energy is expended, i.e. a closed system wherein energy in is equal to energy out. Basic thermodynamics. I think if this were applied in more practices where our understanding were to be put through the lens of science more so than spiritual, more progress would be made and we would be taken more seriously.
@MysticFiddler1

I agree in part, as having a handle on any energetic ability implies an understanding and control of the elements at play. A knowledge of physics is basic to understanding anything in the physical realm. However, we don't live in "only" a material world, so there are laws that (at our inept, experiential states) are not entirely predictable. Just as there are energetic ranges as of yet unexplored in science, there are laws governing them, as well. Part of my personal quest is isolating and understanding some of these. But being unable to utilize scientific method and duplicate the activity, due to a lack of knowledge, doesn't negate the phenomenon.

Well, when science can explain the mechanics to its proposed wave function collapsing into particles and the implied power of the observer with our intention to measure reality, then maybe we will grow in our collected human knowledge. Thermodynamics may operate well in a closed system, but do we really know enough to make this presupposition? Maybe. Anyway, I guess it is the faith that science has in its ability to find reality by way of measurement that seems lacking. Any who, I like your comment, it is something I think of often and am trying to figure out. My father is a physicist and this is a wonderful question we play with.

I think I figured out some of the meaning for those diagrams... they probably relate to magick squares, in a cube form... but first we must understand that Agrippa also explained the Kabbalistic meaning of the Shemhamphoresh, or 72 angels, with three letter names made from a total 216 letters, and it seems 216 is also Plato's "Bride Number"... Marcus Vitruvius Pollio is the source of DaVinci and Agrippa's inspiration for those Vitruvian diagrams, he wrote the text “De Architectura” which also explains mnemonic devices, so in Book V we read the following, “Pythagoras and his followers wrote the precepts of their doctrines in cubical arrangement, the cube containing 216 verses, of which they thought that not more than 3 should be allotted to any one precept. A cube is a solid, with 6 equal square faces, which, however it falls, remains steady and immovable till removed by force: such are the dice which are thrown on a table by gamesters. From this circumstance they seem to have adopted the cube, since like the cube, this number of verses makes a more lasting impression on the memory. The Greek comic poets also divided the action of their stories, by the interposition of the chorus to ease the principal actors, so that a cubical proportion is observed.”

The idea that ancient mathematicians would have believed that the world is actually made up of mathematics would be more surprising if it wasn't for the fact that Shakespeare believed the world was a stage and modern technophiles believe the world might be a computer simulation. I haven't read Agrippa's three books of occult philosophy, but after watching this I've decided to add it to my library. I find it interesting indeed. Mathematics is quite vital to understanding nature and the divine. Fibonacci, Sacred Geometry and especially magick all utilize mathematics, and so it is imperative for one to have knowledge of it if one is to go down the path of studying and/or practicing magick. And the Satori symbol bears a lot of resemblance to the Thelemic symbol🤔

They were not greedy or proud but, in The Division of What Is, humans brought a tool to work, openly. And God for the first time became afraid. Dr. Sledge- Not related to this topic but perhaps you would deign an answer. The 5th Hebrew letter is Hei. Properly is written as Dalet and Yud, yet in modern writing is written as Reish and Yud. First, the modern style cannot be used in the Torah or other religious contexts. It is non-kosher. Perhaps more toward your area is the symbolic and kabalistic differences between these two versions. Dalet's meaning of the material world, the number 4, being a reish with the addition of a yud. Reish as the head, the numerical value of 200, its connection to evil, etc. It would seem that this might even be the context for the 5 wise virgins in Matthew, or the kosher 5, and the 5 foolish, or the non-kosher 5. I was not raised going through Hebrew school, or any such training. This though popped out to me listening to a Rabbi speaking about the letter Hei and the related meanings. Enjoy your work. Please continue to put out such great content.

13:55 This figure you presented, captioned "Note mysterious Arabic Numerals," @ESOTERICAChannel, looks like a Geomantic Astrological Chart in the background, so I'm thinking you could probably draw some sort of numerological correspondence with the Astrological house related to the triangle's number under consideration. Moreover, you could use the numbers in the chart to start generation of Geomantic figures, as they are naturally either odd or even-or maybe there's a missing occult mathematical formula for using this chart and the numbers in Astrological or Geomantic readings? I think the same could be said for the Astrological correspondence to the proportionality/section of the body, as it is contained within the bounds of the chart, so it's influence can be felt in that part of the body-or that part of the body can be seen to have an occult or magickal link with the particular Astrological forces at play in that house. (Oh, and I think the image of the rigid man with arms raised superimposed over the Vitruvian Man just figuratively creates a circle with six points, or two opposed circled triangles, or Encircled Hexagram-and we all know that could be significant, especially since at the time, the hexagram is seen as representative of the classical planets of astrology, as a hexagram with a center point represents all seven ”planets," otherwise known as that old "Mathematoccult" formula: ✡️≈Σ{☀️ ☄️🌎🌘✨} Just the thoughts of an academically-minded practitioner... Best!

Any chance of a video series on figures in mythology like "Abaddon"? About the only thing agreed on that I could find on him was that he is a sort of angel in Judaism. Some say he's evil, others say he's simply the final end bringer. Sometimes called "the angel of the void" is another thing I hear.

I bought this book. Apparently it was written before the invention of punctuation. I'm sure it's full of amazing stuff but it's so hard to read sentences as long as a paragraph haha 😂

Id like to see you do something on the 4 cardinal demon kings ...im having a hard time studying them atm ..trying to understand there role in ceremonial magic...i loose the trail..only goes back so far and only find snippets....seems to be a missing part of ritual of today...abramelim has them all bow to him..and apparently they are needed for solomonic work..which i doubt happens..also alot of the planetary demons agrippa says theyre for baneful magic representing negative aspects...where today all over the internet ppl invoke them...although agrippa and other say never invoke only evoke them...meanwhile theyre are bits and pieces of scattered history about ppl invoking them back in the day..hence why the church got so angry as they were worshipping planet spirits instead of the one god...in any event ..it appears both demon and angel were used...perhaps agrippa did this because of fear of persecution..two different stories being told here...

I've seen the forthcoming Purdue edition advertised, but what is the other new edition that is coming out? I've got the Purdue pre ordered, but it's expensive enough that, if there are alternatives, I want to be sure I'm getting the version I want.

The other edition is Paul Summers Young's translation from Black Letter Press. It costs about as much as Purdue's translation, but it's not as scholarly. I would recommend Purdue.
