The strange part of this story is that, by destroying all the predators, the Epov are creating worlds in which unchecked herbavores overwhelm their environments and food supplies. They will find themselves in a situation where they will have a choice between culling or exterminating the local herbavores and watching their worlds be overrun.

Well, actually, they make a mention of this. In the story he refers to earth-bound herbivores as "competition for the pasture" saying, "but that will be dealt with later". Implying they fully intend to remove herbivores that compete for the pastures on which they graze.

People forget that herbivores are often the more aggressive species in the wild. A predator will leave you alone if you are too much trouble to hunt, but a hippo or moose are some of the most hostile animals in the world.

Any animal can be aggressive in defense, but you'll NEVER get sapient herbivores. There's no need to hunt down, out fight or otherwise out smart a plant. Not much intelligence is necessary to eat plants and intelligence will not evolve without good evolutionary cause. The large, complex brain requisite for higher levels of intelligence is too expensive unless it is necessary for survival. That is why herbivores such as your moose have smaller and smoother brains than carnivores/omnivores. And while most herbivores actually do kill and consume flesh as often as the opportunity arises, Hippos are well known to be among the most frequent opportunistic predators.

Herbivores do not need any other animal, unless it is some animal that eats parasites. This author gets that herbivores are the most likely to be genocidal as a policy.

good story but i was kinda disappointed in the aliens. i had hoped they'd make common cause with us and we'd go after the cats and bugs together instead they're fighting a 3-way war now thanks for the narration

Hmmm, true, but these particular xenos opted for orbital bombardment and outright genocide as their flavor of 'first contact'. And, based on the xeno's monologue to his offspring, their culture is incapable (currently) of viewing 'non-prey' sapients as anything other than a threat to be exterminated. They've earned the wraith of humanity, and what follows thereafter...until such time as _their_ culture changes.

Also, northern Appalachia in the winter? OUCH! Bet they would have loved the swamps of the gulf coast (snakes and alligators), the deserts of the southwest (rattlesnakes and scorpions), the northern Rockies and Cascades (wolves, bear, cougars, elk and bison), Alaska and Canada (the cold weather plus bears, wolves, etc.). Asia would give them tigers and elephants, Africa would give them lions, hippos, crocodiles, jackals, elephants, baboons plus others. Australia... enough said.
