Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

Reminds me of another story, where a ship is pretty much left for dead (engines shot), the idea is to let them starve, but what the attackers didn't know was that the cargo ship was also transporting food and long time rations, so the cargo ship had food for YEARS (and the life support systems recycled air and water).

They have a telepath, who reads the minds of the humans and reports that they have no weapons installed on the ship. So they feck around, and find out. The book is "The Man-Kzin Wars" created by Larry Niven with Poul Anderson and Dean Ing. The quote from the beginning of this story is actually on the back as part of the blurb. Also in the blurb: "Now, several centuries later, the Kzinti are about to get another lesson in why it pays to be polite to those hairless monkeys from planet Earth" There is actually more than one tale in the book, but they are all set in the same universe.

,,Significantly higher price for human cargo transports.'' Probably for a simple reason: One of the biggest selling point in logistics, if not the biggest, is reliability. If you can deliver cargo in a more reliable time schedule, more reliably safe and more reliably consistent, then you got a considerable edge over any and all competition. Reliability is king.

I have a feeling that the features on the second hand human ship, such as the ready mounting points for guns and the rapid jettison tubes that would work for torpedoes, are standard for all human constructed hulls. Effectively all human civilian ships can at any moment be weaponized in the event of a war, the human military fleet is every thing we have. Even the triple redundancies have an alternate purpose, to make a given ship able to survive longer in a battle or function longer in prolonged engagement without requiring a refit.

20 missiles? How? That's mass we're talking about , not to mention the needed radiation shielding for having nuclear missiles on board. What kind of cargo capacity does she have? No making the ship bigger, does not solve the problem. Bigger ship, more of everything needed, plus some impressive heat sinks. Space is really bad at conducting heat. You could , theoretically, store up all the heat produced by the ship and turn it into a weapon, but that just produces more heat. So..heat pumps to cool the ship, or crew and cargo get fried. Its a problem that needs solving , before you launch. You need to balance fuel, weapons, and potential cargo, plus the heat generated, against your profits, or you're out of business. Yeah i know, it sucks big time. Wasn't my idea to make space travel complicated, it wasn't me who designed the universe.
@truekurayami
@truekurayami Жыл бұрын
I think the better question is what kind of missles did she have besides the warhead. To a point there is very little difference between missiles and torpedoes, and since the conditions of space can allow a infantry fired missile travel the equivalent distances as an ICBM it is easier to maximize certain aspects for flight turning a traditional ICBM into an IPBM
@RaderizDorret
@RaderizDorret Жыл бұрын
@@truekurayami The difference between a torpedo and a missile in this context is the missile uses powered flight and can maneuver to intercept a target while the torpedoes don't have their own drives (as explained in the story) so the effective range is much more limited.

Deleted my old comment as I realized I was agreeing with you. From some of the author's chosen tech for the story (gravity drives, graser mounts, missiles vs torpedoes, etc), I'm guessing we're looking at tech similar to the Honor Harrington universe. I'd also like to point out that heat pumps wouldn't do crap to cool the ship because those pretty much require conduction or convection to work efficiently. You'd need massive radiators like those shown on the giant human mothership in James Cameron's Avatar (that ship's design is about the only good thing about that movie).

Radiation shields = lead, layers of lead. Mass isnt that much of a Problem in Zero Gravity aka Space. Propulsion is more important. A Cargo ship doesnt need to be extra fast, capacity is more important. Imagine a container-Ship in Space and slap better engines on it. Depending on Design, you dont even need a fully pressurized ship. Raw Material as goods can be transported in an unpressurized Cargo bay. Means lesser Volume that has to be maintained with Lifesupport.

@@truekurayami Command codes could be secret. I mean in Star Trek, they can use one console to control another ship's with the command codes. Also, it might only be set up on decommissioned ships that are being sold on the open market. You really wouldn't want to be known as the supplier of choice for pirate vessels.

@@silvadelshaladin Easier said then done. For Command Codes to be kept secret they would have to be restricted to certain people, and Merchants would find it cheaper and more cost effective to NOT have a system like that on their ship as such an interface would allow others access to their ship through more than just basic comms, since all it takes is one bad deal to turn from Legal Merchants to Pirates thus they would be watching out for anyone that would know the Codes and view them as pirates until proven otherwise. So only people that would have the Codes are Human Military for the system to work and the Human Merchants would still have to rely on Use of Force against Pirates if there was no Human Military ship or installation in the proximity. As for being "Supplier of choice" for pirate vessels it really wouldn't do much damage with how ineffective Pirates are in this setting since Piracy is almost non-existant and it is well known that any would be pirate will either die or give up long before they become a problem means that you just happen to be making profit off of suicidal idiots that can also provide a paycheck to merchants, since as stated there was clear government funding for non-military vessels to remove pirate threats when encountered.

Waste of l rofl they are sending the bill to the government who’s known to pay out if you file paperwork correctly. They can buy better ones with what they made off this encounter 😈. That’s the whole point.
