Aguero says no because he is nervous and doesn´t have the vocabulary to answer the questions properly. Period
@Coulduseawish
@Coulduseawish 10 жыл бұрын
bernabemido No, he really thinks that English speakers use the word "no" the same way it is used in Argentinian Spanish. English speakers usually use tag questions or phrases like "you know" to convey that meaning. That's something I've been taught while growing up and learning English as an Argentinian. Unfortunately, Aguero's background is not as good as mine, he comes from a working class family and I don't think he even had the chance to go to an English institute and learn what a tag question is. He was just transferred to Manchester City barely knowing how to say hello. I hope he keeps on improving his English.
@Coulduseawish

bernabemido However, of course he gets nervous while having to speak English, his vocabulary is rather poor and let alone his grammar. It's hard to speak to a native speaker of a language when you hardly know that language's basics.

It is a bit of a read but it will help you understand Aguero's difficulty with English, and you will appreciate his effort cause his English has improved. Spanish from the Rio de La Plata region (Argentina and Uruguay) is different from the Spanish of other Latin American countries (we use a lot of words that were invented by the immigrants by mixing Italian with Spanish), and almost an entire separate language (when it comes to grammatic structures and pronounciation) if you compare it with the Spanish from Spain. And to say "no" (as "don't you think?" or "you know?"), or "y bueno nada" (to finish abruptly a phrase that is getting long when you have already made your point), or to use "nada" as a connector, is a common thing. We also use a lot of gesticulation and sometimes we completly erase a word from a sentence by doing a common gesture (like the one we do to ask "what?" or "what's the problem?" or "what's up with him?". We bring the tips of the fingers of one hand together and then move that hand back and forth, many times when we do that we don't even say the words cause its meaning is implied) Those are some of the most common obstacles Argentines have in learning English. Don't get me wrong many Argentinians know english but they are mostly those who learnt it while being children. Learning a new language when you are older (past 20) is harder. You will always look for equivalent words while learning a new language, and in the social stratum to which most footballers belong while growing up, the common vocabulary has a lot of invented words (slang) that don't have an equivalent in English; and that's why they find it hard to make coherent sentences. Eg: in the interview with Zabaleta, Zaba had to use full sentences to explain what Aguero said with one word, like "pedernera" (which is slang for getting really drunk). Aguero always uses words like those and it is difficult to explain them when you know the language so imagine how difficult must it be for Aguero to try to explain what he wants to say with his little knowledge of English. And the "gesticulation thing" is also a difficult habit to drop. We tend to automatically think that the other person will understand the sign and unconsciously not pronounce the word and move forward with the phrase; and that it is not the case. English speakers will not understand the signs and the phrase will not have coherence. (My English teacher used to make me sit on my hands or grab the chair while I practised speaking, so I wouldn't use signs). Though most Argentinians gesticulate while speaking (in informal situations) teenagers are the ones who use more signs while talking. English speakers, usually, find it distracting.

It seems like Agüero's struggles in learning English parallel the struggles Rooney has with English. I must say though, Kun's English is getting better than Rooney's.

In other words your saying that if I learnt Spanish so I could talk with Messi, I still wouldn't be able to understand him since he's language is different to mine?
@flort13
@flort13 10 жыл бұрын
if you learn Spanish (from Spain) you will understand Argentinians if they want you to understand, unlike the differences between British and American English which differ mostly in pronounciation or in the use of some word to refer to the same thing, "Argentinian" Spanish (it's actually Rio de la Plata Spanish but lets call it that) also differs from Spain Spanish in structure and verb tenses (we conjugate verbs differently). Native Spanish speakers from Spain have problems in understanding Argentinians when speaking if they use jargon, so if Messi speaks using usual jargon you won't understand him. Anyway my point was that people who come from poor backgrounds (like Aguero and Tevez) use a lot of jargon when speaking, more than your average Argentinian.

1:12 that is the truth - Samir is correct, a South American team is my odds on to win the WC, (Argentina or Brazil). Messi & Aguero have taken it easy this season (especially latter parts) to rest themselves for the WC, this is going to be a special tournament. Hope France fails to pass the group stages, absolute dimwit of a Coach biased as anything.

They are just similiar in terms of ability of learning language. but perhaps the there is something distinguish which this guy is loveable, whereas Tevez 'mockeable' . That's why we don't mock this guy's english that much.
