i saw and had to click on it. This was my childhood with Speed Racer, Marine Boy, Scooby Doo. People watched Captain Chesapeake all the way into late their teens. He brought comfort to a chaotic day.

He wouldn’t catch on. Kids today can see cartoons anytime they want now. Cartoons was special back in the day. We had early mornings while we got ready for school a couple hours after school and wonderful Saturday mornings.

WBFF had Captain Chesapeake and WDCA had Captain 20 For those of us that lived in the sweet spots that could pick up both channels clearly we were constantly changing back and forth. And UHF channel dials on tvs back then sharpened your skills on how fast you could spin that dial.

I remember watching Captain Chesapeake sitting at a break table next to the pizza oven in Timmy’s Carry-Out by Bay Ridge Rd., tuning a portable B&W TV my parents got as a gift at a timeshare pitch, rabbit ears wrapped in sandwich foil, working on my spelling homework, eating Twinkies, and drinking Fanta mixed with Pepsi, and counting the minutes until I could get home and ride my BMX to a friends so we could play tag ‘till the sun went down and lumber home to crash my sweaty head to sleep.

I was in jr high and High school in the early 70s and lived South of B'more right outside of DC and watched the show. In the 1960s we also had the Capt. Tug show which was similar supposedly filmed on a boat called the Harbor Queen on the Potomac but really in a studio. Jimmy Uhrin also now dead. Anyone else here remember Capt. Tug on Channel 5 DC local station?

I think what one of the reasons behind the creation of Captain Chesapeake was limited advertising. Remember back then if a show was 30 minutes long only about 5 to 7 minutes at most was commercials and hour long shows only had about 10 to 13 minutes of commercials. So if advertisers only paid for a certain amount of spots during shows then empty space could occur. Those empty spaces were filled with Captain Chesapeake and Captain 20 (WDCA) and by having people that kids related to allowed then to continue as long as they did.
