I'm working on a Clone Wars Ahsoka at the moment and this is so incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to put the tutorial together. You mentioned both 1" and 1/2" foam - which did you use for which parts of the headdress? And for those of us that can't buy from Joann's, would that just be a medium density foam?
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 8 жыл бұрын
+Camille Lyon (Chameleon) Awesome! I'm glad you are finding it helpful! I used the 1/2" foam for mostly the connecting sections. The 1" was used for the montrals themselves. Yes, I would definitely suggest medium density foam

Awesome job, you inspired me to become a character from my son favorite movie series, I think is fun since he will be one as well.. I used to craft my own costumes, do my makeup and also for my relatives, and design my own clothes when I was younger but I became lazy lol. I was looking for a tutorial that I don't have to use a sewing machine for the headpiece and yours is really great, the best so far I found, I'll do the pattern and ask one of my friend to do the sewing part, I can do it by hand but I have just one month be start buying all materials, and putting pieces together... Hey Jedimanda, Could you create a full list of your materials? And do you have any tips for creating patterns? I'm also interested in making her head piece from Clone Wars not Rebels. Any thoughts? Great Job by the way!
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Hannah, here is a full list of my materials I used Green upholstery foam (1" (1yd) and 1/2" thick (2yd)) White lycra spandex (2 yds) Brushable latex from FXWarehouse.com white thread and sewing needle hot glue in some parts quilting battling white and navy acrylic paint with brush For the crown (Worbla, paint and craft foam) styrofoam head and stand For patterning the headpiece, its honestly trial and error, I suggest drawing out what you think it looks like in cardboard or a rigid surface. Only draw out one side of the montrals and hold it up to your head or the mannequins and adjust from there. Then copy the same side on carboard and tape them together down the middle. The back is the same way. The key is to think in 2-dimensonal first then once you start sewing, the 3-dimensional aspects will start to form. The clone wars headpiece will be very similar just shorter and smaller. but follow the same steps. Good luck!

@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I necessarily suggest it because I chose the latex as a sealer because its end result looks like skin. Plus it only takes about 2/3 coats. With MP, you wont get that skin texture and it could take you up to 10 coats. BUT you could totally use MP if you want. MP does crack though, just be aware of that. Good luck!
@malloryb1524
@malloryb1524 4 жыл бұрын
Jedimanda ok thank you for the insight! I’ve never used latex and wanted to be sure I was going in the right direction. If I could ask one more thing regarding latex, I have a big container of clear liquid latex that I’ve used for Halloween costumes. I’m wondering if that would work as well, or perhaps not since it’s clear?
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 4 жыл бұрын
@@malloryb1524 the clear latex would work just fine! But to be safe, before you spread it on the headpiece, I suggest making a small swatch piece of the foam and spandex together. Then spread the latex over that swatch piece to see if you like it. Try it with the MP too and compare.

Your ahsoka cosplay is amazing! Great job! I plan on cosplaying older ahsoka from Clone wars (the one from her vision ) Her head piece is much longer and thinner towards the end i planned on making the base out of chicken wire and then adding some layers of paper-mache and possible some white fabric.. Do you think this method would work aswell?
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 8 жыл бұрын
thank you! you can definitely adhere this method to it. Just draw it out several times first. Paper-mache will crack, i wouldn't suggest it. The layers of lycra and latex with give it flexibility and you will be much happier.

Do you think the same technique will work for younger Ahsoka? And is the headpiece adjustable somehow? I'm kind of worried that if I do it on standard styrofoam head it will end up too big/too small.
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 8 жыл бұрын
+ShersterQ I did believe so! just draft the pattern as close to the younger ahsoka. Mine isn't adjustable. but the good thing about the styrofoam head pieces, you can cut them down to your size before you start on your headpiece. Measure twice :)

Hi i'm silvia and i listen your tutorial many time and you use foam, lycra to cover it and liquid lattex for paint it. But what Kind of lycra 'cause i heard you Tallin about spandex. and how you hid the seams? thank you and i Hope to do something incredible like your ahsoka haedpeace. ❤
@Jedimanda

hello! lycra and spandex are the same thing. You can use both. I also hide the seams by doing the henson stitch that I talked about in the video. Practice the stitch first then try it out. It's meant to hide seam allowance when sewn properly.

The outer foam is attached to basically a wig cap I made out of quilting batting. You see the formation of it it being made early in the video. If you create it over a mannequin head, i promise it won't slip off. It's very strudy. Good luck!

how much latex and spandex would be needed for ahsoka's headpiece from season 5? i would assume that it would be roughly in half considering the fact that mine would be much smaller than yours
@Jedimanda

hey there. I would definitely say exactly half of what I used for season 5 Ahsoka. Cotton spandex would work just fine. I would test out a swatch with the latex applied to it just to see but I'm pretty sure it will be just fine.

This headpiece looks absolutely amazing! I was wondering, you said in the video that its pretty hard to move your head, so I was wondering, how flexible is this headpiece? I'm trying to make a Togruta cosplay that I can lightsaber duel in (no acrobatics or anything crazy, but i would need to be able to move around decently well) and im wondering if this method would work for my cosplay. Im doing a cosplay for a 17 year old togruta, so its wouldnt be as big as yours, but still could really restrict my arm mobility if i dont use a good method to make the head piece.

To be honest, it is not at all flexible. I can't move my head in this one because of the foam inside. I would suggest purchasing or making a full latex casted one.

Did you use the Henson stitch to sew the foam or just the fabric? I've only ever heard of using the Henson stitch for sewing fabric (usually "Muppet fleece") and your link to the Henson stitch doesn't seem to be working anymore. My grandmother was a puppeteer and when she worked with foam rubber she usually used contact cement.

oh goodness, I'm not sure, because it's technically "casting latex". I would recommend you asking someone there, I'm sure they might have a suggestion, maybe something near the "window sealant" area. Don't use silicone, it will be too heavy.

Hi I've been hunting around for an easy tutorial because my sewing machine knowledge is little to none. I really like this tutorial, but could there be a way to apply this to a Shaak Ti headpiece? Stupid question I know. Also, could I modify it to make the headpiece moveable? Not freely but to appear slightly realistic. I was thinking very thin wire? Possibly pipe cleaners? Help. I'm new at all of this.
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 8 жыл бұрын
Yes to Shaak Ti, you would just need to basically make everything longer. Now in regards to making it movable. You would need to replace the stiffer upholstery foam with something like quilting batting. So I would recommend making the headpiece fully, when you are at the point when you are sewing up the lycra, find a spot where you can take our the foam and replace it with the batting, specially in the tails put (in reality, I should have done that to make it more moveable). I'm not too sure what the wire or pipe cleaners could do but I would recommend trying that out. Good luck

it is easy, just needs lots of patience. so I didn't use that much latex, just a couple of ounces. Just check out the links i have in the description for the types i used. I sewed the spandex direct on top of the foam piece. I did not take it off. Think of it as sewing yourself into a garment. make it fit like a glove. The latex will mask the seams but not completely. When you were sewing the lycra onto the foam, did you use the the henson stitch again for that? Did you seal the paint on the headpiece, if not did you have any problems with color rubbing off when wearing it?
@Jedimanda
@Jedimanda 8 жыл бұрын
+Summer Wendt I did yes, I used the henson stitch to stitch the entire thing together basically. I didn't seal it because I was in a rush, the paint hasn't peeled off yet from the latex. But if you get something on it and try to scrub it off with water, it does start to come off. I suggest selling it with a layer of Plasti-dip spray just to hold it on. Plastic-Dip is a flexible clear rubber like spray. Thanks for your comment!

I like her lekku in Rebels but I’m not a fan of her outfit. However, with the new season (7) of TCW, she has a lekku that in my opinion is decently long enough for my liking and the outfit is much better. Well with the background information given, what do I cover the foam base with? Is that a layer of latex? I know this sounds dumb but I’m not an artist so I’m not used to different materials! Since I suck so much is there legitimate places that sell Ahsoka lekkus? Thanks so much for taking the time and t he kindness to share this. May the Force be with you!

First off, your Ahsoka cosplay is incredibly amazing! I've roughly finished my pattern, but I have a question about the top of the headpiece. I noticed in your video that on one of the back pieces the foam reaches across the back of the head. Also, on the pictures on your Facebook page there is a seam on the top right of the back of the horns. Does that piece cover the "donut" and the empty space that connects to the front of the head near the hairline?

Thank you! yes you are right. there is a piece that covers the donut. There is a lot of seams on the very top of the piece because I knew not a lot of people could see the very top. Try to focus all of your attaching points and seams to the top and back. but yes you are correct.
