Ai is everywhere, it’s a buzzword for almost any article and youtube video including this one however ai could have massive negative side effects to the future of game development and it’s a can of worms that’s already been opened. Recently the Screen writers guild in the US voted heavily in favour of striking against companies for the use of AI moving forward in game development, the lack of pay keeping up with inflation and general safety procedures. Today we are going to be sitting down and focusing on one of those. AI and how it’s role in games has already been getting played but more importantly how it could affect games moving forward. This won’t just be a teardown on the use of AI as like I said it’s been getting used for decades, i’ll discuss some of the positives from things like Quality assurance tests through to the negatives on how the removal of human creativity could just lead to every game being the same or using the same information to come to its conclusion on how to build the next game. So sit down, grab a cup of tea and let's talk about how Ai could ruin the future of games.

I always viewed gaming as interactive art. Having reconstituted art constantly thrown at me becomes exhausting (you begin to identify the patterns pretty quick). I think you have to have a really strong lore, design and audio base to allow the machine to create. I think AI is best when its constrained to NPC decision making and catching cheaters online.

Ai can be both good and bad, depends on what people use it for. Like to think it can help to immerse you into a new fantasy world that seems to amaze people, more so open worlds. The same or a similar dopamine effect that people get from reading fantasy novels iykwim.

Galactic Civilizations IV is probably a great way to use AI. Having the AI there to enhance a mechanic is great, and the way GalCiv does it is by generating empires with lore, traits, and icons.

Overall I liked the video, only thing I would comment on is that procedural generation isn't AI. Procedural generation in based on predetermined math and calculations e.g. modeling 1 step of a staircase then procedurally generating the next steps by a formula of for example 50cm forward and 50 cm upwards. Overall works on algorithms and seeds which can be reverted back to when inputted the same. Good video overall though thought I would point it out as its a common misconception.

Gate keeping is not a bad thing. It's a defense mechanism to protect something you like from people who don't respect it for what it is. Not everything for everyone and not everything has to be for everyone and not everyone is owed or entitled to experience everything. Fallout used to be an isometric turn based CRPG and it got turned into a first person action RPG (Oblivion with guns as the saying went back then) to make it accessible to people who had interest in the game world, but not in the genre. And Fallout could never match the depth the first two games had again. No, not even New Vegas. And that's what needs to be considered in the case of the Souls game as well. The challenge is part of their identity. Making them easier would strip their identity. As for AI, I also think it could do good as an improved social AI and a deeper way NPCs interact with their world. TES used to experiment with those a lot with Morrowind and Oblivion, but instead of improving on them, they just stripped the functions in later entries.

I have less concerns personally. I think that the games industry is a market and companies will need to make what sells regardless of ai . The firms who want to make the fifa/cod/wow money will continue to make their games in this mould. If ai reduces cost there is a chance developers can cease having to create for the lowest common denominator and go for areas they know a customer base exists. I think you'll just see npcs who wouldn't have many lines, begin to have endless lines of waffle should you want to speak to them. They will have realistic routines that can change because they don't need to be programmed specifically to suit the scenario. Takamura in Cyberpunk and Yen in the Witcher will still have a human writing them as their content is crucial for the plot. Ultimately the market will not allow then to make generic crap, as it won't sell.

*I can't think of one game that wouldn't be better with advanced AI or chatgpt, its literally what I've been waiting for since 2010. imagine being able to have an active conversation with a dragon in Skyrim and convincing it to destroy every NPC in the game....or pickup a random girl off the street in GTA5 and form a relationship with her that leads to you becoming best friends with her.....its just endless possibility no matter which way you slice it and CLEARLY gaming needs this* 🕵

I think the reason Starfield needing a high end computer was so jarring was because Bethesda got a reputation of their games running on anything. Skyrim, and Fallout 4 required very little to run, even at launch.

AI is extremely important for game development. AAA games now can take 7 years to make, which means a major lack in making any money.. I don't think this will destroy the "Art" of it, it will just make things much much faster.. At the end of the day we still have taste.. So I can't see it changing what we want from games.

I disagree with the AI-powered difficulty; my experience would be absolutely cheapened if I knew something in the background was turning my experience to make me feel accomplished artificially. I would rather have one soul-crushing difficulty that everyone is forced to overcome, and when you finally do, you're part of the cool kids club. The only thing that sucks is when people let that get to their heads, and they start trash-talking any "non-cool kids" over having beaten a video game intentionally made to be beaten (because trust me, it can be made not to be beaten, quite easily in fact).

Great video with a very weak first part. Sounds like you’ve got all the reasons why modern game industry sucks and labeled all of them as AI. Data driven development, procedural content generation and addiction exploitation existed long before AI in modern understanding. AI would make these things worse, but it isn’t the reason why they suck in the first place. Treating game experiences as predictable reproducible content is.

I've spoken in prior videos about the issues I briefly mentioned within this video. When I'm mentioning them it's only to talk about how with ai these issues could become even worse due to companies trying to find as many easy ways around releasing products. Summarising as ai could enable companies to release half-baked products because it's cheaper and easier to do so.

Considering in what kind of shit-state some publishers and studios release their games, giving the devs a few tools to get more work done - nothing wrong with that, although i fear it will bloat some open-world games, until they (finally) become out and people are sick of dull exploration

Its so disappointing to hear that we can never fix AI to become more capable of whatever we want it to do, whether it may be as a concept tool, or an high-quality output robot. If made to address the artistsic limitations and understand the “all-might SoUl”, the automation alarm would just ring (since reduction of flawless automation is tooootally the best course of action from humanity) , and commentors will be emboldened from all around to keep on parroting “Terminator, AI killer robots, Skynet, we’re all gonna die!”. ChatGPT, maybe (assuming a HUMAN at OpenAI invested alot into making it dangerous), but its not like an image or song generator is plotting your demise. Facebook and Twitter and stuff are already doing that crap, and its not like they hire no engineers in datamining our lives. And if we simply stop AI at this level, in the same breath as stopping it from doing physically dangerous things, like manned armed military drones, or drive vehicles through heavy urban areas, the shit quality will just simply a way to shut up the conversation, and dump it in the garbage to be as useless as NFTs. AI art is obviously not conceptualizing anything out-of-this-world new, but that is not what everything in our lives call for. We still need generic paintings to hang on hotel rooms, album covers for dirt poor musicians, non-stock image content to act as YT video filler, and meme AI song covers to be made. We don’t need to spend $1k in hiring a team to make a Pixar ‘Caust poster, and it would be frightening to hear of a future where we will be penalized if every random pleb that partakes in AI is shunned for not “stimulating the economy”. -Ill post a new comment after watching the whole vid

Anti-cheat in coop games gets my vote, simply because when randoms use exploits to make the game easier, it ruins the experience for the players who want the genuine challenge. Also I'll point out that hookers were fully functional in GTA way back in the 3D era, long before IV and V.

I partially agree with your takes, partially disagree. Yes, AI is a tool, just like any other tool. It can be used properly or misused. I'd like to focus on 2 points, 1 where I absolutely agree with you and 1 where I strongly disagree with you. The point we both agree on is that at the end of the day it's up to us the consumers to dictate to developers how to use AI. If we don't like the soullessness of games like Starfield than we should not buy games like Starfield in order to send Bethesda a clear message that this is not the way we want AI to be utilized. If we don't do that and instead buy games like Starfield in droves than Bethesda will receive the exact opposite message, that this is precisely how we want AI to be utilized and that they should do so more in the future. Where I strongly disagree with you is this notion of AI replacing us humans. My disagreement with you is a rather subtle one, not that I categorically disagree. What I mean is that I do agree with you that in general humans do tend to add value to the process, which is why they should be kept on. However humans that don't add up any value should absolutely not be kept just because they're human. Basically your view is a more general one of not allowing AI to destroy jobs on the market. My view is that jobs that become obsolete should absolutely be destroyed as there's no justification to keep them around. The key is how to not make jobs obsolete, as in find ways to bring that human value that the AI simply can't bring(not yet at least). As for voice actors specifically, that's part of a much larger issue of copyright laws and the concept of ownership, both of which are currently defined in an incredibly antiquated way in our legal systems. My argument is that the issue isn't nearly as clear cut as you make it seem and unless human voice actors can bring value to the table that the AI can't than they absolutely should lose their job, as harsh as it is to say... I genuinely believe that good voice actors are actually capable of bringing said value, but most voice actors aren't good and therefore are easily replaceable with AI, and that's the real crux of the issue.

Indie and AA games don't seem to be going anywhere. As AAA games seem to be becoming paradoxically more convoluted yet more shallow, and more expensive, I'm losing interest in them. Baldur's Gate 3 comes along and shames studios who spend hundreds of times the budgets. The AAA industry is too much of a behemoth to be saved. I can live with inferior graphics and a bit of clunkiness now and again if I get a far more grounded product that isn't made by literally thousands of employees from multiple countries (how can one have a fixed vision for a game under such conditions. Games are not the same as making films).

@@Exiled7 Even in the future, game development is a business. If the sounds of birds, the sounds of rocks is not part of the core game, they're not going to do it because it is very...very low on the list of priorities. Adding something miniscule like that in the game just for the "immersion" is inconsequential. The next big thing we are trying to do is make every building accessible but we have to think about the scale of the world and the consoles capabilities. They don't care about gamers wish list if it's not a part of the game because many game developers feel like whatever we put in the game, gamers going to end up complaining about it anyway. Rather is too much of "the thing" or it's not enough. These days, there is no happy medium....even with AI....In the future. (@35:29 you wasn't "asking" but you was suggesting... anything.) So, you only looked at the worst side of it and considered it the standard. All the bad you listed, doesnt need AI to happen, it's happening now. Lazy, greedy companies are putting out bad games since forever. AI can be like monetization, it can go the way of loot boxes or constant new content to extend the life of a game. AI is just another tool, yes some studios will abuse it, but others won't. I can't wait till we have AI powered game dev tools, this will revolutionize the indie scene.
