That sky voice is almost a year old. The problem with dinging OpenAI over this is it's basically saying if you sound or look like someone famous even if it is just you have an American accent and they do. Then you can't sell your voice or looks
@kalechips5972

Not true. This is already settled law. Look up "Midler V Ford Motor Co.". You can't appropriate the identity of someone for commercial gain, which OpenAI clearly did because we know their intent was to make Sky sound exactly like Scarlet Johannson.
@DGaryGrady
@DGaryGrady 23 күн бұрын
It's a little more complicated than that. There's a common-law concept of "right of publicity" that protects celebrities from impersonation in certain commercial contexts. It's possible that Sam Altman's "her" tweet created some potential legal problems. It isn't that the "Sky" voice sounded a lot like Johansson, it's that it also that the vocal mannerisms are similar to those of the character she portrayed in the film. A lot of people in Texas sound like Jim Parsons, but if one recorded a radio commercial in which he sounded like Sheldon Cooper and said, "Bazinga," then I suspect lawyers would get involved.

And if that director got shot down he/she moves on to a next person asking to fill that role. Now if that next person happens to be similar to the previously asked person, should the previously asked person sue the director ? Well, that has never happened. So why now ? Not necessarily. As we have seen with google’s mistakes, things can go wrong with AI has some big unknowns, and a substantial risk factor, because people will associate with the human-like voice that sounds like the famous actrice (and not with the voice actrice), when she explicitly chose not to. I think it’s a wise decision at this point, but that decision is undermined by using a voice that is similar. There are legal restrictions to the use of lookalikes too, and this is the use of a soundalike. There will be put legal restrictions on the use of digital doubles of famous people as well, if they don’t already exist.

Microsoft has a long history going back decades of bringing out something unpopular but giving you the option to disable it while its on by default. They also have a long history of turning those things on after updates despite you opting out or disabling it. I remember some years back you could completely uninstall a feature and Windows would actually re-install it during any update. But it gets worse because microsoft also has a long history of eventually turning optional things into required things and often they cite that its now a core windows component that cant be uninstalled. I fully 100% expect Recall to become part of Windows and be sent to the cloud because this is like a drug addict having to manage pure coke without taking it. It wants your data using Windows to train Copilot. The other thing that really bothers me is what happens when the company you work for gives you one of these laptops. There is no disable option because they've hidden that in group policy. You're just a user, not the admin of your laptop and now everything you do is tracked. Is this not a companies wet dream to have this much access to their workers computer use? I really hope people who work from home have another laptop they use for anything not pure work related.

I honestly didn't think Sky sounded similar to Scarlett Johansson at all. ScarJo is literally famous for the raspiness of her voice, which is just not present in Sky's voice. So, are we saying that all high-pitched excited American girls sound the same? To me, it seems like people are automatically making the connection because "Her" is by far the most similar pop culture example of the AI assistants being created right now. But also, people can have very similar voices, much more similar than this. I still can't tell my aunt and my own mom apart on the phone, which they've pranked me with several times. Having a slightly similar voice to a massive celebrity should not automatically disqualify you from working as a voice actress.

@@oneewingedangel What? Very few knew he'd reached out to her before she posted on Instagram as a response to so many telling her it sounded like her, so that obviously was not the reason people made the connection. And I honestly thought giving her the first shot at the real version of something she made a movie about was a pretty nice thing to do. Also, tweeting the name of the most popular film with an AI voice assistant after releasing a groundbreaking AI voice assistant seems like a pretty normal thing to do. Comparing that to Elon's insane antics is wild to me. He probably thought, like a lot of people (myself included), that this obviously sounded like a different person and was therefore completely fine to joke about. Considering how they, according to their statements, both hired and instructed the actress completely by the book with no instruction of imitation, I honestly think it's crazy that they had to apologize at all.

I mean she is a voice actress, I'd imagine losing her ability to talk might impact her income a bit? No? Holy crap! Johannson was set up by OpenAI... can you not see that... she's PUBLICITY! Clearly OpenAI had a role they were paying for, hired this 'Sky' actress woman... THEN proposed the voice to Johannson on unfavorable terms who refused... and later Johannson heard the voice and thought they had emulated her from samples... that was deliberately set up like that.

You don't wait to figure out how to align or control potential AGI until it begins to become a problem. By that time it's far too late. Plus, misalignment can absolutely happen with "dumb" AI like LLMs, even if they need guiding or are being used as tools by malicious humans. Couple of things. Recall is basically the exact same thing as Apple‘s Time Machine, which has been around for decades. I don’t see why there is an issue. Secondly, the voice of Sky lacks the little bit of gruffness that Scarlett Johansson‘s voice has. Besides, you could just as easily accuse OpenAI of trying to find a voice actress that sounded similar to the character “Her” as opposed to the actress that portrayed that character. I’m not sure there is anything wrong with that. I feel bad for the voice actor that probably spent a lot of time creating Sky.

The question is if OpenAI did an about face on their old polices of signing non disparaging contracts, did they have these employees sign new contracts or if this was just a case of verbally saying "You are good bro, you have nothing to worry about..." If its the former, excellent those employees are covered, as a new agreement should supersede the previous agreement. Their entire business model is predicated on delivering you adds, not answers. A tight AI answer costs them money. Cool research aside, they will never make a meaningful move into generative AI until they figure out a business model. This is contrasted by MSFT who is primarily in the business of helping people get stuff done, not selling ads. Good AI gets stuff done.
