Cecil B. DeMille lives again! At least, that was my immediate reaction to this lavish, indeed, over the top production. Unfortunately, most of the singing isn't a match to the visuals, being adequate for most of the time, rather than exceptional. In the end, this production is a tasteless waste of money. (But, I admit, it's fun to watch for the spectacle.) It's always a challenge to stage this opera - balancing a first half that cries out for spectacle, against a second half that is essentially intimate. Many directors have found a solution to this problem, but the very nature of this venue means the production must maintain a level of spectacle throughout. And I guess, Aida would have been the choice for this venue because of the demands of the first part of the work. The viewer then needs to accept that the entire opera must then have some level of spectacle. However, that, in turn, demands superb, "spectacular" singing. On that, I, at least, am disappointed. I forgot to add; what would have been excellent audio quality is ruined by horrendous compression, something I thought was reserved for "pop" concerts and music where minimal dynamic range is almost the norm . [I am usually reluctant to write a negative comment, it's much more rewarding to find things that are a joy to share with others. But this time, unless you want to watch it as a romp, for the spectacle, go elsewhere, for Aida.]

I heard Crocetto sing Aida in SF in 2016 and thought it was a solidly sung performance. Her voice has been pushed too hard since then, it sounds like. The top is in somewhat rough shape (the high C in “O Patria Mia”, harder in pianissimo to be fair, was a miss altogether). The middle register much more secure. Wondering if she should shift to high mezzo territory.

What's the difference between musical actors and opera singers if the latter be hooked up with mic too? It's challenging in the open air production, I understand, but it's disheartening to see opera nowadays boil down to some fat people with wobbly thin voice waddling around in ridiculous costumes.

Удивительно как вписались Калмыкский и Грузинский танцы на ножах в опере Верди написанной для Каирского театра оперы и балета. Казалось бы где Каир и Итальянцы с Французами и где Калмыки и Грузины. Где древнее царство Египет ?! А, нет, там пробегали наши народы Кавказа и за кавказья. Все на одной сцене.

@@larissamontero Na, ob nun black-facing bei der Einen oder/und white-facing bei der Anderen. Macht in der Produktion auch keinen Unterschied, was ohnehin doppelte Liebesmüh bedeutete. Ergo: Nicht besonders ressourcenschonend. Da wir gerade bei "doppelt" sind: Ich habe bisher keine Aufführung gesehen, in der alle drei Hauptrollen mit Interpreten besetzt sind, in die ohne Probleme vom Volumen her zwei Personen reinpassen würden. Also neben dem cultural appropriation müsste man eigentlich noch eine Prise body shaming draufgeben. Kommt einiges zusammen. In somma: Eine ziemlich verkorkste Inszenierung, oder? 😇

Hahaha....Wagner hätte niemals ein fremdes Libretto vertonen können....nicht vertonen können , weil seine im wahrsten Sinne genuine Kompositionsweise an ihn als Personalunion Textdichter & Kompositeur gebunden war ......unauflöslich. Übrigens eine schreckliche Inszenierung hier , Kitsch ohne Ende. Aber wichtig sind die Sänger inklusive Chor.

Wagners Libretti sind übrigens, gemessen am Niveau der Zeitgenossen, auf hohem Level, jedes Textbuch ist anders, ob Ring Tristan Parsifal etc... Diese Inszenierung hier ist schon schaurig .....das wäre mit simpleren Mitteln interessanter zu haben gewesen. Die Sänger gar nicht so übel, die Scala war auch nicht besser dran mit Fr Netrebko & Meli

@@meisterwue Sorry für die späte Antwort. Seine romantische Phase bis zum Lohengrin ist ja noch irgendwo akzeptabel. Ich habe Probleme mit den ständigen Alliterationen im Ring. Die 'weihevolle" Sprache der Spätwerke (Meistersinger ist da die Ausnahme) hat man, ich wette, selbst damals - geschweige denn heute - in ihrer übersteigerten Ausdrucksweise nicht überall verstanden (quod erat demondstradum durch die oftmals problematischen Übersetzungen). Was diese Aida angeht: Ist dir nicht auch der hawaiianische Hüftschwung in der Stimme der Protagonisting aufgefallen? Mit der exakten Tonhöhe nahm es die Dame auch nicht so genau. Da war eine der bisherigen 500 Aidas der Dame Netrebko schon besser. Ich hatte mich nach der phantasievollen Turandot und dem eindrucksvollen Nabucco auf eine gleichsam Interessante Aida gefreut.... Radamès als Prince of Persia, Amneris, eine vulgäre Edelnutte, der König als männliche Klytämnestra, die rituelle Schlachtung der Vulkantempelpriesterin, die grauslige Choreographie und dazu dieses Monstrum von Cyberelefant... nicht so ganz Meins. Selbst das Entschwebefinale der Blaufuß-Inszenierung in Bregenz war da passender als der Neonquader dieser Vorstellung. Wenig was mir wirklich gefallen hat.

How many more tricks could this so called director come up with to upstage the singers ??? Not to say that would be difficult because most of these singers are very upstageable !! Radames is very capable, both the women are substandard, the bass who portrayed Ramfis has a voice that is placed so far back in his throat that it is impossible to listen to…….all in all one of the worse Aida’s I have ever seen and heard and I have heard many.
