Just 2 super tall guys in Richard Armitage and Graham McTavish, both are 6'2". None of the other actors selected to play the dwarves are over 5'10", still a bit taller than a dwarf.

Fun fact: Gimli is 6'1"

You have more depth to place your character when you're doing force perspective, if the actors are tall to begin with. Think of it as more "length of actor" = distance between closest and most distant points to the camera in which you can place the character. So it's slightly advantageous to have tall actors for characters made small via forced perspective.

Because they have to appear slightly taller than hobbits. Hence they got tall dwarves so that the scale is maintained. Otherwise they had scale issues.

Thank you and I'm sorry if I came across as testy. Peter Jackson probably thought his comments about Aidan ignoring him were funny but instead a whole bunch of people on tumblr started calling Aidan unprofessional and comments like that could hurt his career. It's ridiculous as it's obvious from the video that Aidan was in physical distress.

AidanTurnerForever Peter Jackson is not exactly the best at paying attention to his actors health, or generally caring about it. Just watch the extended clips for the LOTR movies, the part where he talks about the 3 hunters (Legolas, Aragorn, Gimli), hunting the orcs, and that all three actors were actually injured when they were shooting the part where they are running at a top of a hill or something. He seemed gleeful tlaking about it, while it is certain that the actors were in pain. Or the shooting of the scenes before the gates of Mordor in ROTK. It took place at the site which the New-Zealand army uses for bomb testing, so not the safest of places, but they cleared a small patch for them, and PJ let his actors ride out of the borders of this patch, during one or two takes, being fully aware they could step on a bomb. That being said, I think he only does these things because he is really dedicated to his work, and maybe sometimes he is caught in the flow. And his actors put up with him, because they are equally, if not more, dedicated to these films, and are ready to make these little sacrifices. But still, a good director knows when to stop...

Dunadi About the first scene you mentioned, Peter Jackson was fully aware they were all injured in some way, and the only reason they did that scene injured is because they said they wanted to. If they hadn't wanted to do it, Peter would've got a couple stunt doubles in or he would have shot the scene another time. Peter does care about their health, but they chose to do it, so if them doing that scene hurt them in any way because of their injuries, it is purely their own fault.

I know they did it, because they wanted to, that's what I meant when I wrote. that both director and actors. were equally dedicated to their work, and they were ready to push their limits, in order to make a great movie, even if it meant physical pain for them. I don't reproach Peter Jackson for that scene, but I still think, a director should pay a bit more attention to the well being of his actors, because if he pushes them too hard for one scene, they might screw up the next several. (I might have put my foot down and say: Guys, I know you are tough and everything, but please understand, we can't risk a delay in shooting beacuse you injure yourself more/have to got to a hospital/etc.) Then, again, they made it through 6 movies without losing an actor, so what do I know...

I was so mad that the producers didn't try to schedule the production of Being Human's 4th season around Aidan Turner's Hobbit work schedule. Especially as there was so much down time in The Hobbit schedule which already coincided with Being Human's preliminary schedule. For example The Hobbit shut down for 2 months in the late summer at the exact same time as Being Human started filming one of their blocks of episodes. Also everyone knew from day one that The Hobbit would shut down filming from April to June for Martin Freeman to film Sherlock. Why couldn't the Being Human producers schedule filming at the same time as Sherlock. With a little care they could have kept Aidan and consequently Russell Tovey who also quit in part because he didn't want to continue on BH without Aidan. I guess I'm still a little peeved as I loved Being Human with Aidan, Russell and Lenora.

He was smart to kill his character off. He was brilliant in it but who knows what a recast would do.

Kili is my favorite, too. I can’t even watch when he dies. I like to re-watch movies, but I have to look away when Fili and Kili die. But I still cry, especially when Tauriel kisses him goodbye.
