There is nothing new under the sun. Even Morihei Ueshiba faced this situation: a lots of martial art masters didn't belived that aikido could work or if it is effective. He's got challenged a lot for this reason [and I mean, a lot]. For example a judoka master didn't belived that aikido falls are real and not staged. After he asked for a confrontation then he studied with Morihei how and why they work that way he was amazed. A fav. story was this: the famous Shutaro Nishimura went to see Morihei for a duel; when he sees Morihei, he asked himself: is it a joke? how this middle age peasant can be a great martial master? Of course he was defeated very easy. Morihei then he took a piece of paper and said: grab this one if you can. No matter what Shutaro Nishimura did, he was unable to catch the piece of paper. Nishimura was looking at Morihei smiling and ask himself: is it possible to be such a master that can defeat his opponent with just a smile? The "problem" with aikido is it is very misunderstood. Most ppl they think that if you do not show violence you are weak, or if you don't use punches or kicks you can be easili defeated. In fact it is very difficult to explain why aikido works, for some ppl. Some try just to take out some of aikido techniques and then when they fail with those, they say: aikido don't work. But aikido works as long it is used in it's totality not piece by piece. Another point: many ppl today say aikido don't work in real life. I have to remind those that its founder, fought a lot of battles in real life situations [you could be killed those day very easy, not like today when we have laws; back then if you would challenged someone to a duel you expect to be hurt really bad or killed and nobody would go to jail]. Another thing is: aikido came to reality from military conditions: martial arts back then were not a sport like today [not like mma]. Martial arts were born and were used by military not by someone who is just a fan of those fancy moves. So, jiujitsu, etc and aikido too were born in real life conditions. But at some point in his life Morihei understood that you don't have to kill your opponent, you only need to not get hurt yourself or not get into any fight at all if possible. Also for those who said aikido don't work in real life because they don't see it in mma [or what we see there is not aikido, it's some... I don't even know how to call it] it's because mma has a lot of rules that don't allow an aikidoka to use aikido [lock joints etc]. It's like you are saying to a boxer: let's fight but you can't use your fists!, and then [when the boxer is down]: see? boxing sucks! So if anyone enter in a mma ring, claiming to use aikido he /she doesn't use aikido [first of all because aikido don't allow competitions] becase one will be able to use only a fraction of aikido in the ring because mma rules don't allow those moves. So that will not be aikido anymore, but some sort of wannabe mma/ part aikido sort of thing. The bottom line: if you have to obey their rules, then you don't use aikido, so you can't prove anything [it will be a mma vs mma fight not mma vs aikido]. Once i've spent some time on the internet and see the rules of mma fight: at least 20 of those prohibited moves that are used in aikido, jiujitsu, aikijiutsu, etc One last thing: if you don't belive aikido works, go out to an exhibition, and chalange an aikido master in public. Say to him: I don't think those fancy moves of yours work, they are not real. It's all fake, so let me challenge you and make a fool of you here and now. Make sure you record that one to show it to everyone, and you will gain faime and also you will prove that aikido doesn't work. Funny thing: nobody wants to do that, just to stay in a chair and say what is fake or not. P.S. in the old time when martial arts were born [not just aikido] everything was for real, they couldn't fake it or you would end up dead. Today everything it's a sport with rules and you know the law protects you just in case. At least, how many broken bones do you see these days in most these "real arts"? When it happends the media explodes while back in old times, if anyone got killed, others would be like: "he challanged another one to a duel, what did you expect?"

+terrmosgmail ? Come on man, can you explain to me why this is the only freaking martial art that doesn't have footage of effective use against a RESISTING opponent or footage of realistic application? There is something ironic about claiming that a style that was supposedly created as a GENTLE form of martial art is so much more dangerous than every other martial art that unlike them, it cannot be demonstrated. And Aikido wasn't born in the "old time" it was born in the 1920's
@z8ph0d

+Aphoresis Aikido is in no way "gentle" and anyone who tells you otherwise is fooling either you or themselves or both. Aikido is meant to avoid permanent damage. Key word being permanent. I can assure you that any one of the first five techniques, ikkyo through gokyo, when properly applied--key word this time being properly--I can assure you, you will not want to be getting up. To your second point--Aikido never claims to be an "old" art, its founder died in 1968. Duh. What Aikido _does_ claim is that its roots are in Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu, and Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu claims to be a curriculum developed by Sokaku Takeda based on a Samurai fighting lineage. That's it. Oh, and I just saw Aikido recently with a resisting opponent. It happened tonight, when I was in class. I attacked someone, and they slammed me down on the mat. And like hell I meant to go down.

Wow lots of comments here. Video dating from 2010. Overall yes you do not do Aikido for self defense on the street, that is for sure... By experience our biggest weakness is also poor attacks. So many videos prove it even on advanced level. Or just people exaggerating when receiving the technique (jumping, anticipating etc). Not good at all as they just become receivers and not attackers. Totally different situation if you would face a real sparer for sure... Also the competencies not only depends on the MA itself but on the person practicing it. I have done a few martial arts and few years boxing. Currently taking private Muay Thai boxing classes which brings me a lot of new openings. Aikido is great, rich in many sense and can be practice for years. As far as effectiveness is concerned many questions can be raised. Personally I have huge doubts and i am working on it... I tend to agree that too complex technical aspect and esthetics being taught goes against its effectiveness. Each instructor should search total freedom of attacks with more advanced students to allow spontaneous motions and body memory to kick in. Well established technical structures are good for beginners but tend to lock us within the same pattern after a while. However we need to pay attention to not going away of the roots of Aikido. Not an easy task! To resume it is up to each individu to broaden its practice to include maybe practicing sparing sports or else. Then the aim is to adapt this knowledge to Aikido practice with respects to its fundamentals. Instructors should lead the way.

+Karel Kunes Having this perspective on Aikido is the only way to practice Aikido. Otherwise your training isn't worth an ounce of the time and energy you put into it. Although I tend to disagree--practice with a high level of responsiveness from your uke, and you will end up learning to respond quickly and effectively to unanticipated situations.

+sienna three - Well yes I agree with the points you emphasized on. This is a weak spot in Aikido and I have said enough about it in previous comments. However Aikido is great and can be done in a more "martial way". The art itself is not at fault it is more down to practitioners. As for Judo, I have done Judo for 3 years like most kids in France, The judo federation in France has a huge amount of members close to half a million. Kids contributes greatly to that. My kids are doing Judo as I think this is great to start with and if they like it continue with it. However, as there always is an however, unlike Aikido, Judo remain a competitive art which promote the strongest and cast aside the weakest. Or you are rapidly put to the side if you do not want to compete as a kid and so on. I know many people doing Judo and this is the story that I keep hearing. However this does not mean that this is the case in general. It looks like it anyway. Many other MA are effective however all have their weaknesses. I am doing Muay Thai after having done 2 years of Savate and a good few months of classes in Kick boxing in the past. They are all also effective and honest in their attacks. No simulation... Aikido though is from a different level. What is rich is that anyone can practice it. Not just the strongest. That people even at 50, 60 etc are still able to have a good session at it. With rougher martial arts you tend to be limited with age. And with rougher martial arts many slow down or stop when they get limited. So these appeal to a younger crowed eager to display testosterone... When you get older, I suppose, your relation to a MA is somewhat changing. As far as I am concerned I seek to develop my skills through the practice of different activities. Sure I am at the moment disappointed on how mostly Aikido is turning up. Among the reasons, the ones you have mentioned are part of it. I still believe, and it might perceive as pretentious by some, that we can still keep the roots of Aikido and focus on a more martial aspect. I am tired of the philosophy, mathematics and aesthetics attached to it all. All that mental masturbation that is too much after all these years doing it. I probably contribute to it anyway... Still Aikido should be stupid and chaotic sometimes. Unplanned, surprising for most advanced. And you are right students are doing too much when receiving from an instructor. And instructors never fail, never get hit, no one dares challenging them in general. A few instructors teach failure, show that they are not perfect but this is seldom happening.

Aikido is very beautiful to watch. It is not intended, as far as I know, for a MMA style fight where the opponents are squared off against one another. Rather, it is for an aggressive one-move offense, as would occur in battle.

By the way this is not a demonstration. These are shots of classes given by myself at the time. During a class one technique is demonstrated and students must repeat it. I try to gain as much freedom when teaching, accept also to loose, make mistakes and so on. Since 2010 I believe my approach has again moved on.

I can see the difference in fluidity and execution of the techniques between a 5th Dan and a 6th Dan like Goffin. Goffin's movement are crisper, and cleaner as well as mesmerizing.

And also not really the same approach at all, gestures, background. Watch the Novalaise gouttard video on You tube and you will see where I come from. This video here is snapshots of my classes in 2010. My instructors always told me to make lots of mistakes to learn, accept to loose, not to be so perfect, clean looking. Where the instructors is always winning. Aikido has become too perfect and esthetical. Mathematical and less effective. As long as people enjoy it in any forms ways then fine by me. That is all what matters.

+Lord Byron It's just a matter of style. In Aikikai, once you achieve third dan, your technique is perfect. The further dan ranks are honorary, and are based on your teaching, rather than your learning.

E-Trike can you send me video of yours I would love to see them. I can live with any type of feedback however please explain on the use of strength. I have done Aikido all over the world and got a good idea of what is the use of it. I am not even going on the rank comments as I also got a good idea how ranks are given worldwide and how meaningless they are. What matters is how you are on the mats. Waiting for your videos. Tks.

The problem I have with these type of demonstrations is that they are very unrealistic! -first off the opponent is always very cooperative and allowing himself to be tossed - second the type of attacks demonstrated here are very unlikely in any real confrontation no one is going to attack by putting their arm out there to be grabbed - thirdly I would like to see a full contact sparring session with protective gear of course to simulate a real confrontation and then be able to see if these moves are actually effective I have no doubt that this type of martial art would be effective against a fellow practitioner who would attack perhaps as it is demonstrated here or against a totally inexperienced opponent.. but against a boxer, muay thai or of course an mma fighter I wonder how they would match up...

si lafuyang they don't have to end up in bleeding if you use protective gear again how do you know these moves can actually work in a real combat scenario if you don't practice the way you would fight

THEBLADETHROWER I don't think there is any equipment developed to protect against joint twists :) This martial art can be seen as a co-operation between the "attacker" and the "attacked" since both are practicing defensive techniques (the attacker learns to dissipate ground impact - for example - and the attacked person learns how to end a conflict in a fast way - just to name a few). Due to the randomness rate of the situations, in most of the times one cannot tell how well-prepared someone is in his attack, that's why all the techniques have a rather high number of "steps" to finish and might be a reason of seeing them a bit "artificial" or "theatrical". In the demonstrations not only the one applying the techniques (tori) should be watched but the attackers (uke) as well (to learn how they figured out the most efficient way to avoid certain injuries :) Besides any way to see it, for me aikido is a very nice sport (in the beginning) and martial art (after a lot of study) that disciplines the mind and the body and, therefore, it provides a nice posture and harmonious approach towards life; shorter, aikido is a way of life. When it comes to effectiveness, any martial art is the most effective for the person that suits it and respects it and his/her opponent.

Horatiu Gratian Bica I too am a fan of traditional martial arts including aikido and probably plan on taking a class along with Kendo, I am shurikenjutsu practitioner and those two disciplines go hand in hand with what I do! nonetheless I still question the effectiveness of this demonstration because of its choreograph an unrealistic set up! And I would have to disagree with you as far as not being able to practice in more realistic fashion, take for instance jiu jitsu this is obviously a combat tested discipline and they are also able to practice, spar and compete at full speed if you will...

Well, I won't tell you something new or impertinent when I say that you should try it first then you'll understand more than I'll ever be able to explain :) Aikido is not a competitive form of martial arts, but a demonstrative one since things can get really messy; besides it's the martial art that resides in love/harmony (Ai) life (Ki) and it's a philosophy (Do); there's the other form, more technical (still not competitive) AiKiJutsu :) Good luck and have fun practicing it!
