I've used Aikido a few times in real life and it's surprising the non-fighting situations it comes in handy. Few months ago I used an iriminage on a kid while roller skating. At high speed this kid turned straight at me and collided with me. Kid was heading for a concussion so I used an iriminage move to safely take him to the ground. The way I do that move I can actually get under the head and back to protect their landing. Then helped the kid up and sent him on his way... in the correct direction ;)

I've practiced Aikido for a couple of year, I've worked as a security guard and i have to say I am pleased how handy it has been. The less brutal force really comes in handy when you only want to subdue an opponent with minimal force. This drastically minimizes courtruns as well.

I was more impressed with Aikido, honestly. I keep hearing all the time how "useless" it is, but it seems really graceful and defended against all types of attack very elegantly, without risking injury for both people. I am impressed. In a streetfight, you don't need to kill your opponent, just put him out of the way in order to not be a threat. Seems aikido is fine, perhaps people in MMA underrate it because they need to submit/KO people more.

@@jantothorti8012 I'm just one data point, but in real life, I really think applying _some_ Aikido against a somewhat drunk and very angry opponent helped me injure them less than I otherwise would have, but we "danced" for close to an hour until police arrived. I would've ran away as soon as I had him tumbling, but I was protecting someone with much shorter legs, I believe Aikido focus on redirection was also useful in "guiding" the aggressor away from a vulnerable target. That said I would not recommend _relying_ on a single style (especially an _art_ focused one) and I still believe that the best fight is a fight that didn't happen, my Sensei was very sure to drill that in.

They often said that Aikido is more the soft one, but that depends on the one who using it against a opponent. You can easily pop off the shoulder or the arms of your opponent if you use a little bit more force and momentum, some older Akikdokas used also punches to distract the opponent before throwing or moving him to the ground.

Problem with Aikido is it has too much exaggerated movement. In a real fight, you want to keep it simple and fast. Also Aikido barely has any strikes. You need to train striking!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its important to learn throw hands properly
@a-blivvy-yus
@a-blivvy-yus 2 жыл бұрын
@@vipr1142 Aikido has better control of distance and posiioning though. Getting the opponent into a position where they can't attack you immediately can give you an opening to get out of the situation. Combine with parkour for added "get out of the fight" potential. Or train both and take the best of everything (like the MMA guy did)!

My criticism of this is that Rokas aikido is passive, often mistimed, and he doesn't execute moves with appropriate footwork. I have never though his Aikido was good. I don't say this to disparage the guy, but I don't think it is a good representation of aikido.

I took a self defense class a while back, as in nearly a decade ago. The teachers (One, an eight dan black belt of aikido, the other, merely a single dan in judo) taught us quite a few aikido moves to break grapples and turn an idiot's weapon against themselves, mixed in with some judo grabs and throws for the ones that just tried to hit us directly. The moves taken from aikido were very fluid and easy to do, and I remember one of the techniques about an overhead swing with something like a bottle where the teacher told us to walk forward at the end to avoid hurting our sparring partner, 'because in this position you can destroy the whole arm by swinging it like a sword with all your might, since they can't do the flip to avoid it. Do that in a real fight on concrete, not here.' He also advised kicking the threat in the groin once you've grabbed them and have full control over their movements, if only to make them pause so you can really put the screws in, or just applying pressure once they're falling so they can't avoid breaking their bones when they hit the ground. Given it was a self-defense course, that wasn't the only set of encouragements to fight dirty. The one with the black belt in judo encouraged kicking downed people after a good throw so they wouldn't get back up, not holding back while throwing/folding fools, and taking the enemies weapon and hitting them with it before they can recover. Good times.

If you look closely, you will see that all of karate's defence involve some sort of counter attack with punches and kicks. But aikido's responses are completely focused on subduing the opponent. It seems that aikido has special emphasis on overcoming the attacker without harming him, which I think is absolutely amazing.

Having been exposed to both Karate and Aikido, that was actually a lot of fun! And if you're paying attention, you'll notice a LOT of overlap and shared physics. Historically, both Japanese Karate and Aikido have classical Japanese Jujitsu and Aki-jujitsu in their DNA. These are the guys who had to defend versus competent chaps with four foot razor blades, so they figured a few things out that worked, and lived to pass them on.

I gotta disagree with number 5. Aikido redirected it so the momentum carried the attacker straight into the ground, but karate blocked it straight-on. If someone's going to headbutt you hard enough to knock you out, blocking like that is gonna seriously mess up your wrist.

from someone that does neither, its seems like aikido is great when you know what attack is coming, where as karate gives you the ability to react to many things, and quicker. more specifically in the case of kicks. with the low kick, the aikido guy just sidesteps because he knows a kick is coming beforehand. it seems to me like aikido might be great for stopping someone that doesn't know or who was never trained to fight from hurting you, but if you are fighting someone that has trained a lot, you may be in some trouble

I’ve only got knowledge of Karate but if those Aikido techniques were used on someone with no knowledge of spinning and falling you could end up with serious fractures and falls onto concrete. To be honest both approaches to defence suit different mind sets and importantly self defence and sport are two different things entirely.

I think that in Aikido, the attacker must be smart. If he isn´t, you won´t be able to do many of the techniques. Also, just like you said, if he doesn´t know how to fall and not end up in hospital it´s a pain to do something without injuring your oponent. Especially if it´s your friend and you are not supposed to hurt him :/

It's a ripe debate, which even the fighter Joe Rogan was waded into 🥋 However, if you observe police and army taking action against an opponent, do you observe them, punching and spin-kicking, or... do you see that they mostly trap opponents in arm locks and various kinds of holds?!? Whether joe and mates like it or not, in real world use, aikido or similar are more likely to be used to control the opponent quickly, without trying to enact a martial arts movie with a minutes-long fight round 😁

@@IamnotJohnFord getting off the line of attack is the first thing we were taught. It's both the most effective defense and the beginning of kuzushi, since it forces the attacker to re-target if he wants to continue the attack. Important point to consider is that the line of attack is only straight ahead at your attacker when he's using straight attacks: the haymaker, to use an example in the video, is coming in at a strong angle, so moving directly toward the attacker turns it into a hug...pretty much the last thing most people throwing a haymaker want to do to you, and a nice setup for any number of judo throws.

I gotta go with Aikido only because he moves AWAY from the attacks before doing anything else. The, he attacked from the flank position. Technique in the field often fail for a number of reasons. The karate defenses were more centered and reliant on blocking and attacking. If the karate defense I saw here failed he's in a ton of trouble. If the Aikido defense fails, from what I saw here, things are pretty much neutral at worst or he's still in a good position at best. This preference is probably because the style I studied was about avoid and then attack so that even if your block was not fully effective you'd still be in an advantaged position.

But you can say this for every martial art, even boxing. A "generic schoolyard bully" usually has no (or very little) idea of footwork and can be outmanouvered quite quickly. But it is quite another situation if there is a streetfight between a master of Karate and Aikido - although the sight of a those two fighting against each other in a bar brawl or street fight should be highly unusual. Nearest would be something like MMA, where praticers of pure Aikido (without being proficient in at least one other martial art) lose way more often than they win.

I've practised a bit of both. I found that I used a bit of both when attacked by my fellow practitioners. For now I think my immediate reaction would be a karate defense as I had more exposure to it. I however love aikido for its laizes faire method of defense. It's like disarming an opponent and after the surprise to say to him to chill. If however in aikido you apply the technique violently, you will cause serious harm slamming the attacker to the ground and breaking wrists and joints.... but that is not the aim of aikido.

Essentially, the style pulled the most practical self defense techniques from the other styles. I believe that if somebody were to pick a martial art for self-defense, it would be a good idea to pick a blended style so that you are a well rounded fighter. I also have taken up Brazilian jujitsu as well so I can have an idea of what to do if I end up on the ground, which would also be a good idea for self-defense as a last Resort, if you can’t get up.

Discipline is what helps you keep your mind more clear from emotions, which allows you think more rationally and calmly. It keeps the fear and panic much more controlled. Jesse, you could’ve done the moves just as effectively had you skipped some of the punches. In my opinion (from Tang Soo Do) the Aikido practitioner simply strategized better by skipping to the takedowns. Had you not thrown in any of the counters you would’ve been just as effective. Since you threw in the counters and took longer to take the opponent down, I give it to Aikido for simple, straightforward and effective moves, sorry Jesse. Like I said, however, skip the counters and go STRAIGHT to the takedown! Just my advice. Thank you for the video, all your hard work and education. Much love and peace ❤️🎸

With Karate a good yoko geri to the ribs or the knees that is the end of you. In a few fights I had on the street, I always used strikes. When there are multiple opponents it is very hard to grab someone. Constantly move and strike. I heard in the past, 2 Jujitsu masters were attacked by 50 robbers and they defeated them all. I love it. Both won. The reason is that both respected the philosophy of their martial arts. The aim of Aikido is to protect the attacker. So the attacker understand that violence is not good. The Karateka was in the philosophy of street self defense. It's you or the opponent. In a real life situation you won't have pity against your opponent who attacks you. So karate has an upper hand that karate strikes the guy won't come back to attack you. I practice karate shotokan I kick hard and punch hard to hurt if I am being attack in the street but aikido is good if it's your drunk friend, angry brother or young people that you don't want to hurt but want to pass a message. Steven Seagal philosophy is breaking limbs while being attack but it's true that true philosophy of martial arts is to protect others.
