Guitarist Kerry Livgren was just doing a finger picking exercise when his wife told him the song was beautiful. He said it was just an exercise. He never thought the band would go for it. Well, here we are.

In 1993, I got to see Kansas twice in the same summer for free. One was at our state fair & the other was an all-day, all-evening concert series sponsored by a local radio station. We were lucky because the '93 line-up was only missing one of the original members, but the rest were there. Till this day, with 40+ concerts under my belt and my daughter having seen around 20, we still both agree that Kansas is the best live band we've ever seen.

The Violinist and co-lead singer Robby Steinhardt’s dad, Milton Steinhardt, was the director of music history at the University of Kansas. Robby started violin lessons at age eight and was classically trained. When his family traveled to Europe while Robby was just growing up, he played with some of the orchestras while there.

Kansas was a great band from the 70's. Their musical style is a fusion of hard rock, southern rock & progressive rock. "Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. But they had other good songs such as "Point Of Know Return", "Hold On", "People Of The South Wind", "Play The Game Tonight", "Fight Fire With Fire", "All I Wanted" etc.

Certainly a unique combo in that Era. This album came out in 1976. The previous album in 1975 contains an anthem that you should hear. Great themes, lyrics that make you think and first-rate musicianship. It's called "Song for America". You will be captivated!!

TO quote Sitting Bull Chief of the Lakota tribe, when talking to a white cavalry officer about who owns land, and quote, "when the blood in your veins returns to the sea, and the earth in your bones returns to the ground, perhaps then you will remember and understand that this land does not belong to you nor me, it is YOU and ME that belong to the land, since we only use it for a short while until we are gone underneath it and are seen no more......." end quote For me this is the perfect quote to anyone who says he owns something, well you can't take it with you, i saw that when many a young men in died during war when i was a soldier and i saw it when my parents passed away. and it fits well with this song, since we are just dust in the wind.....

Following up a big hit like 'Leftoverture' and "Carry on Wayward Son" was daunting, especially for a band like Kansas that has never really trafficked in hit singles. That the cleverly named follow-up was arguably more consistent is a testament to the band, especially given its rigorous touring schedule in support of 'Leftoverture.' Kansas generally moved back toward shorter pieces here but maintained prog ambitions throughout, stretching things out for "Closet Chronicles" and "Hopelessly Human." ‘Point of Know Return’ solidified their popularity, selling 4 million copies in the U.S. alone. It generated hits with the title track and the iconic ballad “Dust in the Wind,” as well as popular favorites “Sparks of the Tempest” and "Portrait (He Knew)" - Excerpts from Ultimate Classic Rock 2023

My favorite Kansas song. Even way back when I was a kid already, songs like these just spoke to me. Takes me back to a simpler time. Like late eighties/early nineties, my first years of what we call highschool in our country, the first year of music education. We weren't taught to play an instrument in the first two years, but the teacher listened to music with us and broke it down to make us understand the different kinds of music, and the lyrics as well as the meaning behind them. This was one of those songs, and after class I was one of the few to ask him if I could bring an empty cassette tape and if he could put that song on there for me >^_^

What is cool in this video, although not recorded live, it's a different version than the studio release. Kind of neat they did that, few bands do, it gives you a little different mix from what was on the radio at the time, and this was a big hit for Kansas.

I always thought of this song as "intimate." Beautiful work...

I was struggling through law school, far away and alone but surrounded by people . Listened to this a lot. A long time ago. Still, it’s still all the same. Dust in the wind. Everything is dust in the wind.

Back in my youth, this was a favorite song of mine and my best friend Billy. He died about 14-15 years ago and this has brought back some memories. It was hard, but good too. Thank you for this.

Hi Aileen 😊 An awesome reaction to Kansas's Dust in the Wind😊👍 I remember this playing on the radio for a long long time 😊 Yes indeed 😊 You have captured the message loud and clear😊 It's most important what Mark you leave behind when you're gone... You stated this very beautifully 😊👍 I wish you all the best as you talk about mental health to those who need to hear 😊 and I hope for all the energy for you as you do so 😊 All the recommendations for Kansas songs are wonderful and I look forward to the reactions from you 😊 Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍

My first concert was Kansas in 1978 at the Jacksonville Coliseum (RIP). Amazing! They sounded live like the studio except for the ENERGY! Atlanta Rhythm Section was the warm up band. Kansas was the warm up band for Queen a time or two and Brian May had a lot of good things to say about them.

From the first time that I heard this song it was life changer. Through all of the triumphs and catastrophes I've taken this song to heart.

Almost at 300k subs, Aileen, woohoo! And yet...this too shall pass. A stoic song if there ever was one, existential message. Wisdom put to beautiful music.

Awesome song and reaction! Another song about dust to check out would be "Dust To Dust" by The Warning live from the 2022 Teatro Metropolitan CDMX concert. These 3 sisters are bringing back rock.
