On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

When you say it has an AMRAAM seeker, we should remember that the electronics and software were lifted from the 120-C, but the antenna has almost twice the diameter, so four times the area. As a result it will pick up four times as much of the energy reflected from a target - quite the boon when shooting at long range and against “stealthy” targets.

AIM-120 + AIM-54 = AIM-174 But unlike the AIM-54, the AIM-174 should be much more maneuverable and able to track fighters. Pretty neat that the Navy decided to cobble this together tbh. Should provide much more breathing room for fleet defense until the AIM-260 becomes fully operational.

It should be noted this missile has been rated for use on the Super Hornet, not sure if the legacy Hornet is rated to carry this weapon. Also the max range of the missile is well beyond the max radar range of the Super Hornet, so it actually relies on other platforms to acquire targets for it and pass that targeting data to the launch aircraft.

I doubt that they would adapt this very large missile to the legacy hornets. Legacy hornets were faced out entirely from the US Navy. Last one was gone last year I think. The Superhornet is a much bigger aircraft.

The Navy no longer has legacy Hornets in the operational fleet (still in some aggressor units), they have been entirely replaced by the Super Hornet and F-35C.

@@Gentleman...Driver A lot of people are saying the AIM-174 is effectively the resurrection of the old AIM-54 from the F-14 Tomcat; a large, very long-range Fox 3 A2A missile intended to engage targets at standoff distances. Only difference is the AIM-174 wasn't built in conjunction with its launch platform like the Phoenix was.

POV: The US Navy casually negating any and all range advantage any country may have held by strapping the most lethal Naval SAM in the world to a plane. Considering the SM-6 has a sea-launched range of ~230-250 miles (Granted, with a booster), we can safely assume that a 100 mile shot from high altitude with this thing would be simply trivial...

@@Hot_Sky_Astronomy The problem with ranges like that isnt kinetic, its about having the power to keep the seeker head active for the ammount of time it would take to hit the target. Radars take a ton of power.

Limiting factor will be radar, us military however is transitioning to any sensor theory so the future is a f18 shooting these from 300 miles while a f35 guides it until terminal

The publicly listed range for these missiles is 150 nautical miles when launched from a ship (with a booster). When launched at 30k feet from an airplane going supersonic one can only guess how much that extends the range (theorized 200+ nmi). And it's carrying a 140 lb warhead. Extremely scary missile to face

It's closer to 500km. Surface launched SM-6 have a 250 nautical mile range. Air launched will be even further.

Yeah, the US is still gonna lose why because Chinese and Russian have hypersonic missiles, which can easily be launched from very long ranges similar to AIM174B, but one biggest advantage its speed, which can give up to 5-7 mach, while AIM 174B can go upto only mach 4. So the US is still on the loss.

@@heatblast876 Sorry dude, hypersonics air to air missiles (R-37Ms) are good and all, but if they are outranged by the AIM-174, their speed doesnt matter. Additionally, American radars are better so they can actually lock targets at the maximum range of the 174

@@heatblast876the R-37M is not designed to shoot down maneuvering fighters, it's meant for large planes like AWACS, Tankers, etc. These AIM-174C's are designed to engage almost all air threats, including maneuvering fighters jets, from long range. Different use case and 1v1 fighter vs fighter, the AIM-174C has much better probability to kill, based on publicly available data

Thats what many are hypothesizing will be the strat, F-35s guiding missiles in from semi-close to targets while the hornets launch from range. I dont think 35s can carry a 174 without blowing their stealth

an AWACS datalink would absolutely be necessary to launch on those aircraft OTH as that missile was meant to do...hope I see it here today! that missile has over 200nm range, shooting that thing at 5k will still get you well outside his MAR. Oh, and BTW...AIM-54 + AIM120 = AIM174.

I think the data link source will be F-35, not AWACS. This is the Navy adopting the USAF missile truck (F-15EX) team kill approach. Due to naval engagements ideally occurring far from the boat, Navy added legs to their team kill. F-35C snoops close in while F-18E/F/G pulls the trigger.

And the necessary CEC nodes get smaller all the time - you don't need an "Aegis" ship to be in there (even thoughbthats really what CEC was intended for originally) - quite a few later model E-2s are equipped for CEC, and it's used by several allied nations (and any of them can join an impromptu CEC network, almost on the fly). As an analogy, traditional AAMs and SAMs are like tank cannons- they fire on what their platform can see. RiM-174 and AIM-174 are like modern artillery - they can fire on whatever *anyone* in the net can see, even if it isn't a "fire control quality" track... atvworst, they just have to get the missile close enough to the target so the (based on, but larger *and better than* , the AMRAAM seeker) missile sensor can find the target.

These missiles will be crazy. Hornet can missile truck for F-35, can pair with the AEGIS, can probably even use datalink from AWACS. SM-6 launches more like a ballistic missile, but unlike the Russian hypersonic, the SM-6 is actually maneuverable. I think the minimum range is going to be more tricky the max range. It’s going to be a crazy missile and with it being remade SM-6 the cost of development, the performance, and software are very mature. This missile is a major threat to Western Taiwan.

If you really want your mind blown...it can use Patriot PAC-3 radar and data link for guidance. So, the US Army could technically be getting air-to-air kills, using the Navy to deliver the missiles. F-18E/F/G could blind fire using Army radar to defend an Air Force base.

Not quite unstoppable, as they can still be hit. Since Eagles aren't very stealthy (2.5 the RCS of a B1-b bomber) an old 4th Gen fighter could defeat a wall of Eagles forced to fly at tree-top level if the 4th Gen were firing at high speeds and from high altitudes downhill at the Eagles. This could be a scenario where the Eagles were under SAM threat and terrain masking. A Mig-31 firing the R-77M could successfully engage a wall of Eagles in such a scenario. It would still offer the Eagles the best chance of success, but they would still have to defend such a threat.

It has secondary role of a AShM missile. 64kg of blast-frag is not much but still more than AMRAAM's warhead for sure.

Well, the parent missile (which has the same basic aerodynamics, aside from launch altitude and speed being higher, obviously) has the same warhead and guidance, and is a highly regarded weapon for surface to surface modes... won't sink a cruiser or the like, but can pick off fast moving and maneuvering surface targets like, say Iran uses. I'd even say its usefulnagainst small corvettes, and even larger ones if they are festooned with external ordnance like Soviet style missile attack boats.

It's an SM-6 (Standard Missile 6) from the US Navy a very deadly surface to air missile that is now an Air to Air missile. Fun fact while the AIM-174B outranges the F/A-18's RADAR system the US Military already thought of that and has implemented multiple systems to make it a non-issue. This not so new yet new missile is currently giving China and Russia fits, Russia will never admit it but they are rightfully terrified of the AIM-174B.

TonymanCS, also, you're all spreading face information. What you're saying is old. The newer version of SU57, which is serial production, has the RCS around 0.015m2 with open IRST sensor, while in full stealth configuration it has the RCS 0.006m2 with close IRST sensor.

Physics engine went a little nuts. Hitting an Su-57 hard enough to make it spin like that does not result in an intact Su-57 that can actually do the spinning.

Using the AIM-174B in NIFC-CA (a BVR/OTH capability usable in a CEC network) mode will be interesting. NIFC-CA can make "synthetic" target locks that provide fire control quality tracks that are passed to the missile, without any actual fire control radar lock, by fusing multiple fuzzier "search" tracks into a position of high accuracy. Think of a Venn diagram in 3D, with the spheres being the "accuracy bubbles" of each radar track - get enough of them and the area where they all agree the target can be inside gets really small. You can literally shoot from "ATC" data... if you have enough data points. This, combined with high accuracy LPI radars on stealthy aircraft , and the fact that any weapons platform in a CEC network can fire on any target any other CEC sensor (or group of sensors in combination) can provide accurate enough data to get the missile to pitbull, and you really see where the US is going. And it works *better* with these 4th Gen fighters carrying the long range missiles while stealthier platforms or "surveillance" assets (none of which even need to be armed for the NIFC-CA shoot) bird dogging and designating the target... often without the target even realizing it is being "painted" (because it isn't being illuminated with fire control radars). The 4th Gen "missile truck" can stand back *behind* the 5th Gen "forward observers", and pump missiles in (because the launching platforms aren't actually guiding them directly and don't need to maintain their own locks).

I think you were not getting a lock with the boresight, because of your PRF mode. If I remember correctly, you want to be on HIGH anytime the target is further than 21 miles, and MED if they are within.

Considering that based on the picture taken by AEROS808 the AIM-174 weighs1,890 lbs (857.2896 kg) while the R-37M weighs 1,120 lbs (510 kg) and they have around the same warhead weight I would imagine that the AIM-174 would likely have superior kinematic performance compared to the R-37M. It would definitely make an interesting video to pit the DCS versions against each other.

I've seen an article posted by Marine Corps Times that the missile (AIM-174) was cleared by the Navy to use on the Super Hornet. Just imagine that the Air Force straps some on an F-15EX.

GS it has been reported that the seeker on the AIM174B has been upgraded so that its terminal guidance can get updates from E-3’s, E-2C’s and even Fat Amy’s. It’s basically a SAM6 with an upgraded seeker. The AIM174B is also reported to do both air-to-air and air-to-ground prosecution of targets.

Hey, GS! Awesome video, as always. Might I suggest for the next video on these to use the AIM-178 the way they are intended. Create a flight of F-18s to act as missile trucks laden with the AIM-178. Accompany that with a flight of F-35s to designate the targets and lead the resulting wall of missiles in. Complete fifth generation chaos!
