Fab song, granted, but what about Wise Up?!?! The soul of the movie is in that song. And much as Aimee has written scores of fab songs since, Wise Up remains her peak for me.

I fell deeply in love with Aimee's music after seeing the video for 'voices carry" when i was in group home for fucked up kids..I still remember where i was standing in the living room of the home i was in alone watching the Tv and feeling the first feelings of feeling like a big sister(that i never had) was watching over me,and i felt flooded with love, love that i was rarely if ever given s a child and never as a teenager from abusive parents thats didnt want me........and that was a very pivotal moment in my life. Thats the power of music,folks...and specifically the power of Amy.

Aimee Mann does this bright/melancholy, sweet hook, minor chord-twist dark pop thing that just fucking kills me. In a good way. It's weirdly too rare in rock music. Any band that can do this as good as Aimee Mann, you'll make me emotionally crumble and feel like life's beauty is indisputable.

Going all the way back to 1995’s I’m With Stupid, Mann was already on top of her game as a solo artist in just her second attempt. And she had already mastered the formula of marrying impossibly catchy tunes to words that simmered with disappointment and dismay. Exhibit A: the melodically springing and lyrically stinging “That’s Just What You Are.” This was a point in Mann’s career where her frustration with the machinations of record companies and the music industry in general often fueled her lyrics. Indeed, the person being addressed in “That’s Just What You Are” could be an ex-lover or an A&R man. What sets Mann apart on songs like this is her ability to deliver a verbal takedown without seeming vindictive or nasty, making her argument always seem like the commonest of sense. “That’s Just What You Are,” co-written with producer Jon Brion, also demonstrates Mann’s expert adherence to meter and cognizance of internal rhyme. The very first two lines (“In our endeavor we are never seeing eye to eye/No guts to sever so forever may we wave goodbye”) manage to both display her nimble wordplay and sum up the situation with no-frills efficiency. For the remainder of the song, the narrator casually dissects this guy’s claim that his behavior is immutable and the result of some long-ingrained character flaw. “I won’t fall for the oldest trick in the book,” she insists. “What’s the matter with the truth, did I offend your ears?” she queries in the second verse, and it’s the kind of zinger that would put a normal guy on the ropes. But the whole point of Mann’s song is that this person she’s addressing lacks the conscience that would allow these complaints to register. “Like it would kill you just to try and be a nicer guy,” she says, suggesting that the simplest of moves toward congeniality are seemingly beyond him. In the bridge, the melody arches upward and Mann’s vocals betray the hurt the narrator is obviously feeling at continually running into the same wall. “Now I could talk to you till you’re blue in the face/ But we still would arrive at the very same place/ With you running around and me out of the race.” Finally she finds herself reluctantly agreeing with his position, realizing that what she’s asking of him is simply impossible: “So maybe you’re right nobody can take/Something older than time and hope you could make/It better that would be a mistake.” Mann finally relents in the closing moments: “So take it just so far/ ’Cause that’s just what you are.” By that time, she’s blanketed on backing vocals by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, songwriting team for Squeeze and a pair that knows a thing or two about pop music excellence. In an interview, Mann defended her proclivity for downbeat material. “I don’t understand how people can just listen to purely happy music,” she said. “And writing music that is just straight ahead and happy with no conflict, it’s like going to the gym or something. It feels like a chore.”

Jon Brion is criminally underrated. Just had to say that. Of course Aimee Mann is great, we all know that. Jon Brion is an absolute musical genius though. Can't even count how may times I've seen him at Largo (best thing to do on a Friday night in LA). My introduction to LA was getting a corn beef at Canter's and then going across the street to wait in line for standing room at the original Largo on a Friday night to see JB. God that was amazing!

Fun fact: This song has been covered by Japanese pop artist Bonnie Pink. Whose music I would recommend to fans of Aimee Mann in general (especially her older works from this era, as her newer stuff is a bit more poppy) -- it has a very similar style! It's very obvious WHY Bonnie Pink would've covered this song once you hear her body of work, as Aimee Mann was a clear influence on her. (It's a really good cover, too!)

Lyrics: In our endeavor we are never seeing eye to eye No guts to sever so forever may we wave good-bye And you're always telling me that it's my turn to move When I wonder what could make the needle jump the groove I won't fall for the oldest trick in the book So don't sit there and think you're off of the hook By saying there is no use changing 'Cause that's just what you are That's just what you are Acting steady always ready to defend your fears What's the matter with the truth did I offend your ears By suggesting that a change might be a thing to try Like it would kill you just to try and be a nicer guy It's not like you would lose some critical piece If somehow you moved point A to point B Maintaining there is no point Changing 'Cause that's just what you are That's just what you are Now I could talk to you 'til I'm blue in the face But we still would arrive at the very same place With you running around and me out of the race So maybe you're right nobody can take Something older than time and hope you could make It better that would be a mistake So take it just so far 'Cause that's just what you are That's just what you are That's just what you are Acting steady always ready To defend your fears (that's just what you are) What's the matter with the truth Did I offend your ears (that's just what you are) You're like a sleepwalking man It's a danger to wake you (that's just what you are)

I’m not sure how popular this lady is but based on the comments I’m getting the idea that she underrated she has a beautiful voice and a lot of people recognize it now especially the new generation now because she’s Opal from Steven Universe and I’m happy about that because she has such a beautiful voice

I've been a fan of Aimee since she was hush hushing in Voices Carry. Even though I've followed her this long, she's one of the few artists that I wish I knew better, like casual acquaintances. I want to like her more and more and I want everyone to join me in liking her as much as we can.

I got here from finally clicking on the Till Tuesday's Voices carry music video that KZfaq has been recommending to me for months. I wish I had clicked it sooner because I now am in love with that song and even though I was only around 2 or 3 years old when it was released in 85, I don't know how I did not hear it before now!I've always loved 80s music and spent the last 13 years looking up music from that era and never came across the band Till Tuesday or heard any of their songs. Aimee's voice, beauty and cool 80s style got me curious enough to check out the rest of her band and solo work and unfortunately I'm not really a fan. It just doesn't draw me in the way "voices carry " does. With that being said she does indeed have an incredible voice and I'm glad she's still performing to this day. This particular music video according to the description came out in 1995 and I was a 12 year old addicted to MTV at that time and never heard this song or saw the video. So it seems the universe didn't want me to discover Aimee till over 30 years after her debut but I'm still glad I found it even though I'm not really into it. Still this lady deserved more recognition in the 80s. Truly her voice is great and what a beauty!

I'm NOT here because of Steven Universe! Rather, I'm here because of Bonnie Pink -- a jpop singer who covered this song in the early 2000s. Her version isn't on KZfaq, but if you're ever able to track it down, I highly recommend doing so, as it's an excellent cover. Remains very faithful to the original, but I just find Bonnie Pink's voice to have a little more "oomph" to it, and I think the mix is better as well. Of course, I also love Aimee Mann -- I bought her CD containing this song solely because I enjoyed the Bonnie Pink cover so much, and I didn't regret that purchase at all. This song aside, my other favorite track from that album is Frankenstein.
