Was Jesus wrong to use the word "if" in Matthew 6:30 or Matthew 12:28? Or was the Apostle Paul wrong to use the word "if" in Romans 6:5? The Scriptures are full of such "if/then" statements that are syllogisms of deductive logic. When you learn eighth grade math you discover that "if/then" statements are fundamental to Geometry and to Algebra. "If/then" math functions are even built into spreadsheet software programs. Their use is ubiquitous in our experience. But you seem to imply that using the word "if" means that the songwriter left open the possibility that Jesus did not walk out of the grave. That is not at all what the songwriter did. You are putting a spin on the word "if" that the songwriter clearly did not intend, and you seem to have overlooked the fact that Jesus and the Apostles commonly used such "if/then" statements to make their points. (If we can't use Jesus and the Apostles as our examples of how to make good arguments, then we are in real trouble among ourselves as Christian witnesses.) Your objection to the use of the word "if" by the songwriter is misleading. Maybe without realizing it, you have stumbled into the logical fallacy called the "fallacy of accent," where you direct someone to an unwarranted conclusion by placing an improper or unusual emphasis upon a word, phrase, or a particular aspect of an issue or claim. At stake is the logical fallacy called the fallacy of linguistic confusion, and one of its specific sub types called the "fallacy of accent," where someone takes a word out of context to convey a meaning not intended by the songwriter. It is not fair to the songwriter to wrest the meaning of the words, removing them from their context and removing them from the context of what is commonly acceptable in terms of scriptural logical argument, to suggest or to allow for a meaning that the songwriter clearly did not intend. Take heart. You are not alone in this type of logical fallacy. Many of us commit this type of fallacy nearly every day in one way or another. Stumbling into the "fallacy of accent" is almost second nature to us. I make this kind of logical mistake way more often than I care to admit. And who knows how many times I have done it without even realizing that I have just committed a logical fallacy! There was nothing wrong with the original wording of the song "if you walked out of the grave I'm walking too." Suggesting that there was is unfair and unhelpful.
