Thank you sir for the explanation of these two metering devices. I know for me these are uncharted territory. I know they both exist and that piston has been around for a while but don't fully understand how they work. Your hard and fast explanation helped me and am looking forward to next vid! Thanks!

Also, even if the answer to the question about doing it without brazing is "no" it is still a good snippet to capture and explain why not. The existing competition for that snippet is just links to product manufactures so those are much more biased results. The search engines would prefer to get results for those search terms from more independent sources which means it's a snippet you can rank for even with a new site.

There are two different types of expansion valves adjustable ,non adjustable u can adjust your swing on your expansion valve if u add a pressure port at exapnsion valve so adjustables are more for energy efficiency to meet certain seer ratings in my honest opinion id just use an orfice it get as cold as its going to get with and expansion valve if not colder 100 percent of time ,with a well insulatated home the compressor run time will be less and last longer than with expansion systems plus one lesss part that can go bad 😅 this is from my experience being the the industry for 12 years plus in so cal i do industrial refrigeration and air conditioning i started my first 7 as a residential ac tech and ran a service department so i encountered all types of issues and complaints ❤❤❤❤❤😢

Yes and no. You know if compressor is running properly there’s nothing wrong with it.. like he mentioned- running without stress. Plus a better humidity control. This is a dilemma for me now. I have a piston system and I have txv. Don’t know which direction to go

Hi Dave, correct me if i'm wrong. Most (99.9) TXV's are Hard Shut Off TXV's. If using a scroll compressor you're ok. However, if used with a reciprocating compressors you must install a Hard Start Kit at the condenser.

Awesome video all the time. I have a question R22 condenser transitioning to 410a. same r22 evaporator do i need to install txv or piston is okay.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
You actually need to replace the coil all together. R22 coils are not designed to handle 410a pressures unless it says it’s compatible with both. If it is compatible or you are replacing it with a new one, and it’s not in a space that is close to living area or sleeping areas, I’d do a piston. When you are close, the refrigerant passing through sounds like water running and can be noisy if it’s close to where you are hanging out or sleeping. 👍🏼 piston is more reliable, txv is supposed to be more efficient.

How do I adjust my valve to make my air colder? That’s what I need to know. It gets hot here in Florida. I was also told I could convert my old Freon unit to the new Freon and save money.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
You can definitely check out some other videos on the adjustment, there’s typically a cap at the bottom and you will adjust it as you are measuring the subcooling. I will try and create a video soon that explains this in detail.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
It’s kind of rare that they will be out of adjustment, and some actually don’t have any adjustment and just need replaced. If it’s an older system, I’ve seen many that are working as they should but either they were not sized properly and as they got older they just can’t keep up, or they were sized properly and are just extremely inefficient due to age.

Thanks for the video. We get bi annual checkups on our now 5 year old system. Local HVAC company recommends an upgrade and wants to charge me $2,000 to go from a piston to the TXV which seems ludacris to me. Any thoughts?

Question; can you use either a TXV or piston ? Or does the evap design dictate one over the other.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
Yes you can use either. All Goodman condensing units will come with a fixed orifice piston in a little baggy stuck to the side of the unit. All Goodman Evap coils come with a fixed orifice piston in them, but I always use the piston that came with the condensing unit. It comes with a piston removal tool (little skinny metal pin with a 180turn at the end of it) so you can remove the one that comes in it and put the one that came with the condenser. On a side note, if you are thinking of doing the replacement yourself, I’m going to be doing some videos on the use of mapp gas and stay brite 8 solder for the lineset. With this method, there is no need for a nitrogen flow due to less heat being needed, and a way lower price point then having to purchase oxygen and acetylene torch and tanks. Even from the hvac contractor perspective, it looks like a far more efficient and cost effective way to connect copper lines. Anyways, stay tuned for that! Cheers

@BrickScholar
@BrickScholar Жыл бұрын
You will have high oil velocity and higher head pressure, it is not good for your compressor in the long run. Best to just start over with a new lineset. If you must do it, you can use a reducing fitting.

KZfaq deleted one of my comments for some reason so I'll try it again... while watching the AC install vid a question I had was if it's possible to install it without brazing. That is a snippet question that you can rank for pretty easily
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
I’m always looking for those video ideas so keep them coming! I’m going to be doing a video soon on using mapp gas and stay brite 8 so you don’t need to have nitrogen in the lines because it is waaay less heat, and supposedly it’s stronger. AND no expensive oxy acetylene tanks needed. Perfect for the average DIYer. The only other option is the RLS or Zoomlock hvac crimp fittings but the tool to crimp them is super expensive. Not ideal for a DIYer.
@MattJonesYT
@MattJonesYT Жыл бұрын
@@diyhvacguy Even if the other tools are not realistic for DIY it is still a good source of content because that's what the question in the viewers' minds was. Most of the channels I follow were after searching on a question and they said not to do whatever I was looking for. It adds credibility. Also, it might be worth researching what it costs to rent expensive items like zoomlock and so forth.

How much more energy efficient are TXV's over pistons? Are we talking a few dollars a month or tens of dollars per month?

My home was built in 2016 and today, my neighbor had a tech come out to service his AC and noticed that there was a bag attached to his unit with a part (the piston) in it. Mine is the same way. Is this part important?
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
No, if your unit has a TXV, thermal expansion valve, then that piston was not needed during installation. A lot of guys leave them stuck to the unit. So no reason for alarm 👍🏼
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
There are two types of metering devices, txv’s and piston. Each condenser comes with a piston, so the installer just left it on the side of the unit instead of taking it off and throwing it away is all
