Ok... I have a Simplex and have done a similar test.... but it is high time someone speaks up about the ridiculous nature of such tests. If your detector is at full sensitivity and it is chattering like a rabid squirrel, some little whisper of a noise is not going to be heard. And waving a coin like a mad man back and forth across a coil at 15" and getting minor whispers is not a measure of "depth" in real life situations. You will get ONE chance to swing that coil over a coin. You will need to be able to distinguish it from background noise with ONE swing. So do the test again and swing each coin ONCE at each depth. And then listen REALLY HARD and be HONEST about it. If you cannot tell the difference between that one pass of the coin across the coil vs. the normal chatter of the detector then you will NOT detect the coin at that depth in a real situation. The Simplex is certainly deep and it is a great machine. But using my modified and more realistic test, I have not found it to be much deeper than my old Tesoro Vaquero detector. Nothing personal against you. It's just that there are a LOT of people doing this same test online and it is simply not an accurate depiction of real world results.

I agree with you that's why i entitled the video an AIR DEPTH TEST....

@@WeirdGuyInPark The problem isn't that it is an "air depth test". Such tests can be informative. It's the WAY the test is being done. And you can see the results of such tests right here in your comments. Several people are taking your results as being indicative of how the detector actually performs and are walking away with the feeling that this is some ridiculously deep machine. It is, and then again, it isn't. If you want to do a GOOD test for yourself to see what I mean, try the following test. 1. Get a friend to help you. 2. Close your eyes. 3. Have your friend start AWAY from the coil, not next to it. 4. Have your friend RANDOMLY pass a coin across the coil ONE TIME. After passing the coin across the coil, wait a randomized amount of time, move 1 inch closer to the coil, and repeat. 5. When you think you hear a sound that would make you stop and dig, open your eyes and check the actual depth. 6. Remember, your friend needs to be completely random. If they use a consistent rhythmic swing then your ears will pick up on the rhythmic nulling sound and it will ruin the test. Your friend's goal should be to fool you and try to hide the fact that the coin is passing over the coil. You can do this test without a friend if you are honest with yourself. I guarantee you that you will not be seeing a quarter at 15 inches. It will be more like 8-10 inches. Which is still great, but not anywhere near the levels you are getting. If you posted online that the Simplex could pick up a quarter at 8" most people would yawn. The thing that makes the Simplex excel in your type of test is that by having it constantly chirping like a rabid squirrel, it acts a bit like the typical "all metal mode" of most detectors that emit a constant hum. When you pass the coin across the coil, it "nulls out" the chirping for a split second. So passing the coin across the coil ONE time like in normal detecting will not produce much of an nulling effect. It will not be distinguishable from the normal chatter. But waving a coin across the coil like a mad man a dozen times produces a consistent nulling that can be detected by your ears and makes you think the detector is actually giving you a valid detection at that depth. Technically, it IS giving you a valid detection at that depth. The problem is, this repeated "nulling" type of detection is not something you can utilize in every day detecting because you can't reproduce the test out in the field. No one detects by swinging their coil back and forth a dozen times in one spot. Again, I hope you are not taking this as a personal attack. I have seen your type of test done at least a dozen times out here on KZfaq. So my comments are general comments about the machine and how people are testing and not specifically about your test. Thanks for posting. I enjoy the channel!

@@mtslyh I just dug a wheat penny at 10inch with the Simplex yesterday and the VDI gave a readout..That's about where the vdi cuts out on the air test.. It's all up to the user if the're gonna chase those faint signals...

This is not an accurate test. See my comment above. I like my Simplex but I do not find it to be that much deeper than my other detectors. It excels in this test only because this is not a "real world" test.

Really very nice demonstration, I'll tell you the first hole I dug just trying the machine first time I had to give up on, pin pointer deep and I had to dig more, I dug a few inches more and didn't get it out, put the pinpointer in the hole and it was going off a couple inches before I hit bottom so I knew it was something large so I just gave up being in a park, and about the same thing on the second hole, after that I got used to it some and was going after obvious targets that were not deep, just to get used to the machine, its quite fun to use that machine, very little time on it because of weather conditions. Nice video I need to replicate it so I can get used to the vdi's

@@anast1495 Depends your budget and what kind of hunting your doing both have good warranties the simplex can take a better beating vs the minelab but the minelab has more advanced options, both are water proof, if your doing beach hunting I would go for the minelab, if you are just metal detecting like once in a while and not to serious about it go for the simplex it's a great machine that folds down to a small size, super easy to transport. good luck on your choice both are good machines but I have seen more problems with the minelab then the simplex.

When I went out detecting last...one guy with my detecting buddy used an at max..found a barber dime about 8 inches down...he out it back in hole and put the plug back over it....8 inches down....i sweeped my simplex over it on field mode sensitivity all the way up....i didn't get anything..maybe a scratchy deep noise that most would pass up on..not sure why my simplex didn't hit it 8 inches down

Maybe the dime fell on edge when he burried it...A 8 inch dime on edge would give any detector a hard time..

Damm I was looking for these videos to see what the air test for the simplex was, because I'm disappointed that my DIY IDX PRO lost depth, I was wonder if it was worth swaping a few ic's and returning it or just buy a simple lol, FIY on for most coins including nickels I'm bitching and moaning because I can now only get solid 14 inches compared to 17 inches I was getting, looks like ill be retuning my IDX huh
