Just brilliant! Thank you so very much! My wife has the biggest book collection outside of the British Library, stored in a tiny -sized three-bedroon house. Following a huge flea infestation that ruined our summer, we had to gather all the books and put them in bags in the garden (storage space is, of course, taken with books, antiques and assorted tat). As luck would not have it, the very next day it started raining, monsoon-style as it's the weather's wont nowadays, and one week later the showers give no sign of abating. So many valuable books got damaged! I am going to implement your advice today. Thanks so very much!

Thank you, ladies, for the outstanding tutorial. I followed your explicit instructions and was able to restore my moderately wet library books to a nearly perfect condition. You saved me a considerable amount of money. I'm thankful for your help. Have a great day. FYI - Your instructional video is by far the best on KZfaq. I looked at many.

I use part of an old portable bonnet hair dryer to dry things. It is the heater/fan part and hose. I use it for shoes and into a large plastic for drying papers etc. unfortunately the pages of my wet book became wrinkly

Soak them again in clear water, then proceed. Freezing is a better way to dry them.

Q: Imagine that Conservator is not a option... Books have NOT been "wet", but stored improperly. What is the (Low-tech /Low cost) process to remove MOLD from (small number) of books in which cost to send out exceeds value? I.E. Removing (In-House. Not contracting with 3rd party) Mold from books that have been stored in a DAMP BASEMENT, area in which humidity was high for example. *Mold being primarily on top of book where dust collects. PS: Like your vids... Really hoping you can offer some info on how to kill mold.

Wrap each book in newsprint and freeze. That kills the mold spores. Using diluted clorine bleach on a cotton swab, touch each spot briefly to try to remove stains.

Most of my damaged stock has the glossy page structure, and tried everything to seperate, and can't without tearing, please advise?

Hello Karl-James I am sorry to say that once those pages have dried there is virtually nothing that can be done. If they were still wet, a good idea would be to keep them wet while you carefully separated the pages with a spatula, putting an isolating layer of polyester between the pages as you go. Then dry them under light weight. But at this stage, I can only suggest using them as weights or door-stops! regards Kay Soderlund

They can indeed be salvaged. Rewet them by soaking in fresh water. Peeling the pages apart can be slow, as shiny pages are coated with clay (which acts as a glue).

Glad to help. I did not know that when my own house flooded in 1989 and threw away many irreplaceable items. . In 2003 I began taking my students to flood-ravaged areas and we learned ways to salvage things. All the best to you. Freezing is a wonderful way to dry books.

How can I separate pages from a book that got wet and stuck together real hard if I try to separate the pages they brake help
@kaysoderlund1507
@kaysoderlund1507 6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the book is one with glossy pages - like a 'coffee table' book? If so, now that it is dry it will be impossible to separate the pages. These pages have a clay filler that dries rock hard if the pages get wet. The only way to salvage is to separate the pages immediately, if possible, or keep the book wet until there is time to separate the pages. Unfortunately, once the pages dry while stuck together they will remain that way. Sorry we couldn't be more helpful....

Kay Soderlund yes it's glossy are you telling me I'm gonna have to wet it to separate the pages
@kaysoderlund1507
@kaysoderlund1507 6 жыл бұрын
No, it is too late now that it is dry. You only have a chance to separate the pages while the book is still wet from the first damage. I am afraid it is now stuck permanently.
