At least it's not as bad as that really rude Canadian engineering channel. It's no wonder all the advertisers walked. I should slip in some inappropriate jokes like this:- Guy winds down the window of his car and says "Hey kid, I'll give you ten dollar if you come in my car." The kid shouts back "Make it twenty and I'll come in your face."

The bit about blowing up a board and then claiming it was faulty reminds me of my dad. Had a $2000 set of Keff speakers, new model got released, shop said the only way to upgrade without paying would be replacement under warranty. Wink wink. Dad went home and plugged 120VAC into those $2k speakers. Hell of a 60hz humm for a bit and then wonderful smoke. Still has the upgrades 30 years later :P

Back in the 80s, I worked at a Radio Shack store. Some of the ridiculously expensive computer parts, like memory boards, might be $1200 and special order only. They didn't allow us to return them *unless they were defective*. Not surprisingly, if a customer ordered one, then decided they didn't really want it, those boards BECAME defective by way of a 12V 5 amp power supply applied across a few chips until the smoke came out. It's not like our little store could afford to just eat a $1200 board that we would never sell. We would have been happy to return it still shrink wrapped but they wouldn't allow it.

Your channel never ceases to amuse! Nothing quite as disappointing as the magical reverse polarity pop of death, and the accompanying Eau de Burnt Electronics! The brief story about putting the dead thing back in the box and calling it faulty gave me a good chuckle. I have a personal distain for air fresheners ever since the one where I used to work would randomly spray the occupant of the men's room on their head. It became an art to avoid it's nefarious spraying, I believe it was set to a fixed timer though not motion sensitive. Nothing worse than smelling like sickeningly sweet fake flowers for the rest of the day.

I know the smell of burnt circuit well lol, my brother built a tardis for his wedding as he and his wife are massive doctor who fans. Being the computer programming expert in the family, I got asked to make the controller for the light on top and the sound (a stage amp and speaker hidden inside. Everything worked fine om the test rig (a superbright LED pulsing on and off) but then when I wired up a halogen 12v light using a cpl of mosfets (one to boost the 3v3 to 5v then the 5v one as the gate) oh boy did I miscalculate. I had decided to optically isolate the micontroller from the output. And I used the wrong type of isolator (I managed to pick one that was high resistance until light was received, then it would stay on. Whoops. Coupled with an ineffective heatsink, plus the light itself burning the wallpaper, it was...a rather choking aroma that filled the room 🤣. So, I took a chance and removed the isolator, replaced the now blackened mosfet with a better one, raided some old home electronics for bigger heatsink, and it works still to this day :) it now takes pride of place at my parents caravan site as a decorative installation.

I had a bit of a polarity F-up myself the other week. I was charging a pair of 12v mobility scooter batteries outside of the usual battery case. I'd made up a simple hook up to put them in series, with a connector. I was hoping that the desulfator circuit I'd been trying out was improving the batteries. When I plugged in the charger, I got a red charging light and it stayed on. After a while I thought I'd try it on my spare battery charger and it was showing a red charging light too. What I didn't realise was, that under the influence of a nippy sweetie, I had reversed the battery polarity and the fail state of the chargers was a red light. I destroyed both chargers and had to cry, whilst ordering a new one off Amazon.

I was trying to train electricians to wire up fire alarm panels, PLCs and electronic motor drives for 4 years who used to frequently incorrectly wire up that equipment without reading and following the installer's manual and blowing them up. They also would take the equipment back down off the wall, put it in the box and send it back to the manufacturer saying that it was faulty. After doing it several times on each job, the manufacturers would send their own technician out to wire the units and the Unions lost that work.

Also, the sprayer units with off-brand label here have a very generous amount of space in them, and the circuit is either composed of free-running motor and a spring-loaded cam and shaft that moves the arm down, presses the nozzle then returns back to its timer mechanism or ones that turn on the motor every so often that presses the nozzle via sets of cogs with "finger" on it that returns to its original place by the power of spring inside the nozzle (based on either logic timers or 556 IC chips) Strangely, the ones with variable timer only have delay of either 1, 4 or 24 hours. What an odd value. I have seen one that has "Spray Now" button that initiates its spraying routine about 3 seconds after the button is pressed, presumably to avoid spraying noxious aromatic oil and aerosol into the person's eyes. p.s. The ones available here either has Light Dependent Resistor or Phototransistor as light sensors, but they don't seem to do anything for some reason, as the spray function activates even with all lights off. You know, _everyone _*_loves_*_ being sprayed with aromatic oil that barely resembles any sort of flower or fruit while being in the dark with a sleepy head._ Older ones have two holes for LEDs, but only one is installed and it always seems to be *red* LEDs. It's not like green or blue ones were expensive; By the time those units were manufactured, the price per LEDs (high-intensity pure green, yellow-green and blue) was as low as $0.01. Let me ask you a question though. Who the hell thought installing *RED* LEDs behind *BLUE* cover was a good idea?! The LED has two functions, one is "heartbeat" and the other one is for notifying people about impending aromatic-chemical-spraying action. That means the LED *NEEDS* to be seen to people, but these guys seem to not care about it at all.

The first of these ones were just badged industrial ones with the light sensor function removed and the hole for the light sensor had a white plastic blank in it. Frankenfreshener. My Aunt has one of those ones that was popular in the 80s, that's mounted on the wall, and you press on the outside of the casing to activate it. I was moving an over-the-toilet shelf out of the bathroom, backed into it, and it scared the shit out of me. I didn't realize it still had a good canister in it. XD At least you got it right in the end. I fucked up the preamp on a '67 Zenith Circle of Sound stereo, and it's still sitting in pieces in my living room. Been like that for 4 years now.

I don't think I have ever seen the anti-tobacco here in the states. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they just sell the same thing relabeled under different fragrance name for marketing purposes.

It's an odd one. I've only ever seen it sold in one shop that often buys in cans from other countries with different languages on them and unusual aromas.

Many hotels use high output timed ozone generators to try to get rid of the smell of smoke from rooms. They turn them on and then leave the room while it sanitises it. You get a nauseating bleach smell afterwards.

yea I was surprised to see that fragrance as well. I'm a smoker and I actually use that exact Glade product but I've never seen that canister. Oddly enough my Glade product uses the timed spray mechanic rather than the sensor and I can see when he took his apart that it has the timed settings in it as well. Is that switch just not that in the sensor version or does it have both options?

SpydersByte I figure an answer 4 months later is better than none. I believe that the old circuitry was bypassed for the more economical sensor-driven model. Besides, I don't see the point of the old timer. The sensor sprays when it is interrupted. Someone is there to smell it. The timer just wastes your money by freshening up an empty room. ;-)

I totally forgot about something I made from one of the motion sense ones like 6 years ago. I had a cat who was probably around 10 years old at this point and she decided she was too old to go outside to piss so she started pissing in the corner on our nice hardwood floors. After a few months of trying to stop this I gave up until one day I saw the motion thing in the store and thought "THATS IT!" I bought one I ended up removing the board from the housing and making a nicer looking box for it. I also needed it to spray outward and not straight up. I tried to make my own aerosol water can but I was never able to. Not having a proper way to pressurize the can made that part fail but I modified it to fit the cans from the dollar store.I set that thing to low sensitivity and bam no more cat piss..... in that corner. It was also kinda nice because you never had smelly feet since anytime you walked past it you got sprayed. But eventually the cat passed away and I put the device away and honestly have no idea where its gone. I wouldn't mind messing with it again.

Back in the '70s when we were young I tried to repair a classic Dansette portable record player for an old lady. The volumn knob was causing interference when one turned it. I had it all in bits in her flat and the owner was explaining what the clever young man was doing to her equipment. When reassembled I switched it on and there was a loud bang and smoke. I tried to defuse the tense situation by explaining that you get a noise when you switch an electrical device on but my girlfriend, now my wife, pointed out that you don't usually get smoke pouring out! I'd blown a fuse which fortunately was a modern push button fuse but the owner had lost all confidence in me. I offered to take the record player to be repaired by a friend of mine. As we walked along the main road to my house my girlfriend and me were laughing so loud and for so long that a girl on the other side of the road started laughing too! My friend diagnosed the problem: two wires carried 12v and two identical wires carried 240v, I'd swapped them around. Oh and to fix the volumn knob I should have squirted a liquid cleaner in - no need to dismantle the record player.

There are black lines on the side of the white moulded plastic nozzle at the top of genuine Glade refils. If you get a black marker you can copy the stripe and use cheap refils from the pound shop.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've done that in the past. The Pound Shop cans simply used a single band of black and it also worked. There's an infrared sensor that detects the reflected change when the plunger is pressed down by the mechanism. I don't think they even include it in the units any more. Probably due to reliability. If you put in a can without that mark it would press the plunger once and then report it as an "incompatible refill" by flashing the LED and refusing to operate.

In the 70's i installed and tested telephone exchanges, we has a standalone push button dialler, it was playing up so i took it apart to fix it, unfortunately it was the old style button assembly, reed switch on the board, button, magnet, spring, and another piece of plastic, took me a couple of goes and found i had to balance the button assemblies on the board, then try to insert the whole into the top section , lining them up with the holes without the buttons falling apart.

Wasn't your Chinese fire blaster effect also powered by those aerosol air fresheners ? Could these harmless units be converted into a fireblaster too ?

I used to have the best air freshener ever. It had a sensor that could "smell" and when it smelled bad odors, it would then spray the fragrance! I think it was from Air Wick, but I'm not sure. It worked very well too, although some "false smells" were not rare, especially with the window open or when taking a shower, it never missed a bad smell. Unfortunately, at some point refills were not available anymore, anywhere.

I got one of those and took the sensor apart. I got the feeling it may just have regulated the output to a defined level of a chemical contained in the aroma. But I could be wrong.

I remember what happened to my floor after I left the original big sprayer unit running overnight sitting on the floor. The room was filled with lemon scent, yes, but the floor was also covered with an oily substance that I slipped on and bashed my head against the wall.

that constant gearbox dis- and reassembly reminds me of that one time i wanted to fix a broken children's toy, and after doing so AND confirming it worked perfectly noticed i was missing 3 cogs... never figured out where those were supposed to go, and it never failed again.

A bit too complex of an operation for me personally, but I'd love to find a way to make the big air freshener that I have not splay at intervals. It has a button for a manual shot, but if you turn the timer off the whole thing turns off too.
