I flew on India’s longest nonstop flight from Bengaluru to San Francisco. This Air India flight covers a distance of 8,701 miles and it is the longest flight operated by a Boeing 777-200/LR and the world’s 9th longest flight. The flight is pretty wild with over 800 mph speed due to strong tail wind.
My Journey started at Bengaluru Int’l Airport Terminal 2 with amazing garden setting. It is India’s nicest airport terminal. The non-stop flight to San Francisco is operated by a leased B777 from Delta Air Lines with hybrid decor. It features 28 Suites in Business Class, 48 Premium Economy and 212 Economy seats.
We took off with powerful thrust setting with close to maximum takeoff weight. Captain Mohammed Ali Khan explained the routing of the flight and the takeoff performance calculation. He also explained about the “Bump Thrust” feature unique to the B777-200/LR that can provide 5,000 pounds of additional thrust from the engines during takeoff.
I checked out the current long-haul service offering of Air India. The flight service included 2 full meals. Business Class passengers receive pajamas, amenity kit, and slippers. Has Air India improved? I gave my verdict at the end of the long flight.

With it being a 17 hour flight I guess that they are flying with two captains and two first officers. So it might give them a bit more leeway. I do think that it's need that they can take out that tablet out of the cockpit. I would love to have something like that detailed information in the entertainment system on the flight.

As a son of a former Indian Airlines employee, I'm loving the new Air India. I do miss the Air India jharokha windows from the old 747's, their iconic interiors and their Maharaja, but change is good. I truly appreciate Capt Khan for explaining the flight mechanics and the smiling faces of the crew. Indian passengers are demanding and challenging on Indian Airline crew, but their service is amazing. Air India has over 20 menus including Jain Diabetic etc unlike any other airline. Hope the aging 777's get replaced soon by the 350's for the US routes.

I like Sam being critical - we need more people to give honest opinions about any service (airline, hotel, rail, whatever) to push them to be better. As a passenger, I am excited for the future of Air India. I just flew them in economy from JFK-BOM and it felt like a major transitional phase. Some things are great, some are okay, some need big improvements. Here's hoping we get a better AI so we get more options to travel and better prices.

I was in San Francisco during September/October 23 and very happy to see an Air India flight there. For me, Air India flight always stands out due to it`s livery and also being an Indian basically. I had only flown with Air India only twice, from London to Mumbai and then to Kochi in Feb 2017. Had seen Air India flights in New York, Melbourne, Bangkok and Singapore which makes me happy. Air India never flew to Adelaide in South Australia; but during Covid times around Aug 2020, there were some repatriation flights between Delhi and Adelaide and took some photos. Later on, Air India had two flights transiting via Adelaide, one from Sydney and the next from Melbourne to Delhi, but their Delhi to Sydney or Melbourne were direct. Both these service via Adelaide has since been scrapped. I had flown to the new Bengaluru airport from London and then to Kochi in Jan 2009 with the defunct King Fisher airlines. Air India should provide WIFI service to flights especially the long haul ones.

I LOVE flying but i tap out at flights lasting 15 hrs or more. At that point, i’ve had so many meals/snaxks, seen too many movies, worked for hours, listened to hrs of music, and slept multiple times. You are a brave man !

My last time I was flying out of New Delhi, there was a Delhi police officer for every nine steps I took asking to see my boarding pass. Its definitely overkill and unnecessary to have this done so repetatively.

I learned from a friend, an Air India flight attendant, that if you want an airline with snazzy looks and pretty flight attendants, pick the other airlines. But if you want one whose crew will look after you like their own, in whose hands you can leave your aged parents to be looked after like their own, then pick Air India. I can vouch for that, and am happy to see it hasn’t changed. Also, this commentator is correct in that Air India’s passengers are more demanding. The same individuals behave much better with non-Indian airlines. The last time I flew Air India business class was about two decades ago. There was much more leg room, with nearly full recline seats, and the food was nothing short of sumptuous. But then again, today’s leg room and food are relatively inferior in all airlines, in nearly all classes, except perhaps the ultra-luxurious first classes, which I have not experienced.

This was a nice 777-200 LR ex Delta. The original Air India ones are very tired and not thoroughly clean inside and out. Hopefully TATA has new interiors coming soon at least. Also you are right Indian airport security is the most picky and detailed in the world. Emptying everything electronic several times is daft as is the 5-6 ID/ ticket checks. In my recent flight where the DEL-ORD was delayed 10 hours (third time this has happened) they at least handled it better having arranged a hotel. The previous two times we were left to make our own arrangements and several of us stayed in the lounge for 24 hours. Agree with you on food. They could improve that fairly easily, especially the Indian options I’d think.
