if you consider the fact it was just 40 years from Wright Brothers to this it's pretty impressive how fast the industrial revolution moved.

Aviation moved on tremendously during the war years of WW1 and WW2 so very advanced by the end of WW2 with jet propulsion and rocketry to what we have today.and space exploration. Probably unthinkable technology in the early days of flight.

As a schoolboy, I made this flight to join my parents in Cairo for the summer holidays. We flew at 190mph at 9000'. Quite a contrast with a modern jumbo!

For a very brief period in the late 1940s, BOAC ran a flying boat service all the way south through Africa, no doubt it continued on from Cairo down the Nile. My dad flew to Kenya this way, landing (eventually) on a lake in the Rift Valley near to Nairobi. Surely the stuff of a Somerset Maugham, or Agatha Christie novel .

The cost of flying along as a passenger with such an airplane from Marseille to Singapore in a Lathécoère would be about 100,000 euros in today's money. But the lucky ones said it was the most beautiful and heavenly thing they ever did.

I'm not sure that price can be right. My grandparents flew this way to Nigeria a couple of times and I really don't think they had that kind of money.

Absolutely not a relaxing era. Just before ww2. Europe was in turmoil Persecution of the Jews. Hitler. ...remember?? Egypt had king Farouk and was a British protectorate. Iran had the shah Reba and his first queen consort. The very beautiful but neurotic fawzia Fuad. Sister of king Farouk of Egypt.

Does the channel have the dates right? How did a flying boat in 1940 to 45 evade the Luftwaffe, Vichy, and the Italian Air Force?? This must have been pre-war or after June 1945

B.O.A.C. was created 1939 and they seemed to use Short Sunderland 3 (converted to passenger transport) also during the war. But the aircraft shown here G-AGJN was deleivered 1943
