Air Layer a Cherry Blossom Tree for Bonsai - First year of progress
Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono' (Yoshino Cherry)
I wanted to share the progress of cherry blossom air layer I started last year to make make a bonsai.
Air layering is a good way to get a larger bonsai started. One can select a branch that is already the appropriate size and shape, then work on developing the branches.
I learned how to do this from Peter Chan who has many videos describing the process:
• Air Layering A Large M...
I'll be cutting it down to size soon, and plan to make a video about that as well.
I will share updates over the next several years on this tree and some others I will be working on.
-
My channel is mostly Bonsai related, but I make no promises.
I like to make videos about air-layering, wiring for bonsai, pruning, growing seeds, and well... anything I find interesting.
I am documenting my bonsai progress on KZfaq to share what I am up to with my friends and family, to document the progress of the trees so I can look back at them over the years, and maybe show others that bonsai is something that anyone can get started with since really all you need is a tree (or a seed!) and some patience.
I've always grown trees in pots; ever since I was a little kid growing apple seeds in elementary school. I think bonsai is a great way to keep interesting species at home without having a lot of space. One of my favorite families of trees are maples, but I'm getting into all sorts of other trees as well. Fruit trees and flowering trees are also super interesting to me, and if it has seeds, I want to try and grow it!

herons is one of the best channels in my opinion, thanks for sharing that's a big cut - planning on doing a similar one on my brothers cherry tree

I’m glad I started air layering with something that big. The smaller ones never seem to work as well. I think it’s because there are so many leaves above which caused the roots to generate so quickly.

Good project. It has good bones for a nice trunk line

Thats beautiful....i didnt know that you could air layer such a large diameter branch. I have a yoshino cherry that i have to remove a large couple of "sucker" branches on the bottom of the trunk. I figured, instead of just pruning them i could get a few other trees out if them. Your experience has inspired me...been holding off for a year or two ..going out right now to get some moss and rooting hormones... thanks!

Excellent! It’s definitely a fun way to propagate a good sized tree! If you haven’t had experience air layering before, I would definitely recommend watching some videos from different people. Everyone has different little tips and tricks, and I don’t know if I explained it well enough. I hope it works for you! Good luck!

Couldn't have caught this video at a better time. Have a very large (and stunning) cherry blossom that is long overdo for major limbing towards Winter. Not a fan of waste so am using the larger wood peices for some woodworking projects & now I have another just as cool, if not even cooler option. Thank you for your time and energy.

Nice! If you have a chance, try and pick an area right below some interesting features. What I’m noticing now in my potted tree is that it’s just too straight. I keep thinking I’ll have to cut it down further to make for a more interesting bonsai. On the other hand, it’s still super nice as a regular tree in a pot. It doesn’t have to be a bonsai.

Nice...of course you could do many air layering's off of what you have. I've tried 3 times to air layer a Wisteria with no luck...My new venture is to expose some of the root and since the trunk is actually a cluster of large vines I want to cut a 2 inch in diameter vine about a foot above the ground then dig up some root...maybe I'll have some luck! Good video. I also have some cherry bonsai..very rapid growers!

Awesome! I’ve tried some cuttings from a nearby wisteria, but I doubt it worked. We had some colder than normal temperatures this winter, and so far can’t see anything in the pot. I also have one seed in the fridge… but to be honest I’m not sure if that’s the right thing to do.

This looks great What about air layering some more from that air layer ?

Yeah absolutely I could. On the other hand, I would be better off getting one from the original tree, since I still have it available. I think part of why it had such massive roots is because there were so many leaves up above the layering powering that root growth.

So when you put it in the pot that was just moss and water? Like a moss and water bath? Thanks🙏🙏🙏
@willbreeze397
@willbreeze397 21 күн бұрын
@@1cleandude yes the first pot was just moss, but when I put it in the pot that you see standing on my deck, I had put some regular soil around it. I pulled it out of that pot this spring and untangled the roots, but I basically left it in the same soil/moss mess. I really should have put it in better soil, but now that will have to wait until next spring.
