In this video, I will show you how to air layer a Japanese maple step by step. I got 2 Shin Deshojos from a local nursery years ago and I am going to air layer them so I can have several "twin trunk" bonsai trees by fall this year! :)

Great vid, thanks! Make sure to dump a little clonex into another container next time. When you double dip the brush back into the primary container you introduce organic matter and the clonex will go bad, in my experience

What is the need for rooting hormone in air-layering ? Even without it, you will easily get roots. Have you done tests with & without rooting hormone for air-layering maples ? If yes, can i know your sample size ?

Hi, I live in Michigan, zone 6b. Just bought a beautiful and healthy red dragon maple and I'm wondering if I could still try to get an air layer in (June 15th) and when it'd be too late.

Nice video , do you need to wather the sphagnum from air layering after 1 or 2 month ? Tcx

Excellent tutorial .I am going to try this on my chinese elm . Trunk is about 4 inches at the base and i want a nicer nebari. I am going to apply rooting hormone and make the ground layer in a small plastic pot filled with sphagnum moss and akadama. Does this sound like a good idea?

What kind of plastic are you using to wrap?

Great video but confused about the very last statement. You say you'll apply foil to keep it cool, but I've always been under the impression that heat generates roots. I've heard people specifically use black plastic bags to take advantage of this. Any thoughts?
@Yurup
@Yurup 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure where the uploader lives but roots start developing at around 15 degrees celcius, a bit more heat is nice but not neccecary. To much heat will evaporate the water in the spagnum moss faster and might even kill roots so no need to risk heating up the moss to much. So don't take put an airlayer in the full sun mid summer with a black bag around it.

So I just did this with some Japanese maple, rainbow eucalyptus and rising sun red bud trees. I used the black plastic pods and filled them muth coco fiber and perlite. Can you see any dozen side to this ove your method with the moss?
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 3 жыл бұрын
I used a similar method last year with plastic pods with Akadama. It worked pretty well! I have never used coco fiber so not sure about it.

Yes now is the prime time! (Late May - Mid June) I will be air layering 15-20 trees in the next 2 weeks!

Do you have preferred thickness of trunk/branch that you feel gives you the best chance of success

I usually feel comforble air layering if a trunk or branch is thicker than my thumb 😁

I have a question about *after making the air layer/s* which I can find no information on. The question is: do you trim back any *new* growth some time *after* making the air layers? Can you please advise? I made a number of air layers to some maples between the 8th and 11th May '21. There are no signs of die back so hopefully they are working. I have noticed some NEW growth to the branches of the air layers but do not know if these should be trimmed/removed so the air layer section puts energy in to the production of roots instead of leaf growth? Can you please advise?
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! As far as I know and from my experience, some light pruning does not affect the air layer much. I usually let those new shoots grow to an certain extent so it generates more auxin and send it down to generate more roots.
@FrankEtchells

@@MomijiEn thank you for answering. I will leave the new growth and keep an eye on it and the layers. Very much appreciate your time to reply ☺👍

How long does it take to produce roots?
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 2 жыл бұрын
Usually you will start seeing some roots in 2 months. (Or sooner in some cases) For a trunk or branch around the size of the thumb, you usually get enough roots to separate it in 3-4 months.
@GabiBoldeanu
@GabiBoldeanu 2 жыл бұрын
Regardless of the size of the branch? Is this process done when they are in vegetation or when they are stopped from vegetation?

Can japanese maple survive in the tropics??
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 2 жыл бұрын
It may survive for a year or two then become unhealthy if they don't go dormant during the winter.
