I set course on a flight with smartwatch navigation. I explore the features of the D2 Mach 1 aviation smart watch from Garmin.

I have this watch for a while now and to be honest its the the best smart watch ive used so far. Especially when in the air. I had the d2 delta as well but this one takes it to the next level. This review covers them but a surprise notice is that the d2 delta could not connect to a gps for full time tracking in the cockpit at high altitudes. However, the mach 1 detected the satellites with extreme accuracy from the A350 cockpit which showed the same ground speed, v/s, xtrk error and much more as the aircraft. Alongside the aviation part, it has all the features of the fenix 7 including sleep tracking etc... I highly recommend this watch to our aviatiors. Youll really enjoy it

we had to send our D2 back as we could not get a signal from the flight deck or cabin of a Challenger 605. Interested to hear you got it to work in an A350 flight deck. Did you have an additional aerial connection?

@@user-dw8ud2hw5d hello there As fas as i know we don't have extra aerial connection. Ive set the satellites to auto config and placed the watch near the windshield. It took some 2 minutes or so to connect and worked perfectly.

@@midknight1978 thanks for your info. I used it for a trip Northolt to Malta and back on a C605. Outbound on the flight deck, the signal went at 2000'. The return i was in the pax cabin and no signal at all. Interestingly, I use a Tom Tom GPS watch for running, a mere £150 value. I know i should not, but this watch WILL CONNECT to GPS whilst airborne. I would love to have this watch and have spoken to Garmin tech - but they say inside a pressurised aircraft, very unlikely to work, without an aerial boost. happy for you to give me some additional tech to help me get it to work.

@@user-dw8ud2hw5d no worries glad to help If it disconnected at 2000 ft, check the satellite config as i mentioned and set it to auto. If it didnt work i suggest you replace it. Happy flying buddy

Worth mentioning that you must pay a subscription, annually, to get the full use of this watch. All of the non-aviation / non-subscription features of this watch can be found in Garmin products for around the £200 mark, so it's not exactly value for money, and as TFR mentions - would you actually use it as your primary source of NAV . . . ? Unlikely!

That would have helped in the review. I guess it's like GoPro then? Fantastic camera - until you find out in order to take full advantage of firmware updates, you need to pay an annual subscription.

Nifty, but… The thought crossed my mind, “Its good to have a backup for the iPad, but wouldn’t all the aviation functions be better as a phone app on a bigger screen?” Pulse oximeter, message notifications, etc all are available on less expensive “ordinary” smart watches. Though I’m sure it’s fun if money is no object.

It is a designer watch not a thing that needed. I think I will stick to my smart phone, as the screen is bigger, with most of the same functions available and cost a lot less and can be paired to other much cheaper smart watches if you really what to be notified of social media or hart rate type stuff. But if you have the cash and want to flash it then why not.

I can sure imagine a situation where emergency mode would pay for the watch many times over. Multiple failures in the air, gotta get down NOW.

£1295 for a watch and then you have to spend many hours to learn how to use it, then keep on top of it because if you don't always use it, you'll end up forgetting how it works. It's a lovely looking watch but I don't understand why anybody would want one when you can do most things on your phone, table, or the aircraft's installed panels.

looks a bit gimmicky to me. i've got an onboard GNSS, plus my ipad, plus conventional nav equipment... managing those alone is enough to keep me busy

Your channel seems to be on a rapid descent into teleshopping. Commercial relationships could be getting in the way of independent reporting. Product reviews of this and that, innocuous airfield profiles; I have to say your content is not what it used to be.

Utterly useless. Not that’s necessarily a bad thing. Rolexes keep time far worse than any McDonalds happy meal watch would, but they’re not purchased for telling the time. Issue with a smart watch is that in 5 years this will be a laggy, unsupported piece of junk. It’ll be absolutely worthless. Rolexes don’t have that issue.
Garmin's NEW PILOT WATCH has this brilliant function!
