I love it when the people actually involved in those projects talk about the science, engineering, design challenges they faced to make the planes work.None of that emotional bombastic exaggerated trash talk.

Excellent film. My father is Soviet Air Force colonel (ret.) He was flying during 32 years 62-94 years. Evenly on staff work. Planes was Migs.:mig 21 (all modifications ),mig 23 and several types before it.So thanks for film and hi from Ukraine !!!

I knew Valery E. Menitskiy he was a super pilot! He is "father" of the "Tail slide" ("The Bell") maneuver and one of several pilots who can do "The Cobra" maneuver on the MiG-29 with traditional hydraulic control system(without fly-by-wire)! He was first Soviet pilot who flew on MiG-29UB together with NATO pilot - major of the Canadian Air Force Bob Wade! Menitskiy was a big friend of the GENERAL Dynamics chief test pilot Kevin Dwyer and they flew together on F-16 and MiG-29,all western pilots who flew on MiG-29 or Su-27 told about Soviet fighters only the good things! You can find what Wade and Dwyer wrote about it. In early versions MiG-29 and Su-27 got simplified radars and it was planned that new PESA radars will be ready to 1992-93,but Soviet Union wss collapsed and all working on radars were stopped. After the crisis Russia made new radars for Su-27(N011 and N035 with PESA) and MiG-29(N010 with slot antenna) which are very good. Now Russian Su-30 and Su-35 are not badder than any versions of F-15 and MiG-29SMT and MiG-35(and deck-based version MiG-29KR/KUBR)than any version of F-16. Now Russian Su-57 ends all stages of the testing and soon will goes to mass production,Su-57 is very dangerous fighter and it's not badder than F-35 or F-22!

19:55 While his rationale is correct, that twin engines close together is better than apart on the case of engine failure, that didn't help that Canadian F-18 that was practicing a demo flight. Like in the case of the MiG-29 crash he mentions, the failure of one engine caused the F-18 to veer to the side and crash, just like what happened with the MiG.

Who could have known those demonstrator F15 engines would be used in the F22.

I think the Su-27 and up, and even the MiG-29 look cooler than our legacy planes. I love the frontal look seeing those huge engine intakes.

Of all the jets in the air. the F-16 Falcon is the one plain I would love to fly. I think its the fastest most nimble aircraft and it just slices through the sky, but those Russian planes are also very formidable jets. Especially the Mig-29.

This is very old video since they still talked about Mig-29 with hydraulic controls. Nowadays, all the aircraft either from Russia or U.S are equipped with fly-by-wire.

one "funny" thing - There was a major article in one of the few Polish magazines about airplanes: "Skrzydlata Polska" in 1984 (very hard times under Military Junta of Jaruzelski governed Poland (and still under Soviet boots) - article describing F-16 in details any aviation hobbyist could have only imagined /especially at that time/ - drawings, params, etc... Since then I have some growing respect for F-16, knowing her age...

It's funny watching that now knowing what the F-22 looks like. I think the engines they showed there are the Pratt and Whitney engines on the F-22.

I was there at the Farborough Airshow in 1990. Seeing the Cobra maneuver was awesome, to say the least, but I thought, if he is going that slow when a missile is on its way, no slow maneuver was going to help him.

Here we are in 2021 and we’re still flying these planes.

Both the west and the soviets are saying that their aircrafts are more superior than the other..Both aircrafts are incredible in their capacity..reason why some are still fying in the 21 century and beyond..

In 1992 a group of two Russian Su 27s and one IL 76 made a visit to Headquarters ATC in Virginia. After they reached Langley, Virginia, there was held a training session over the Atlantic Ocean, approx. 200 km away from the coast. The training session, "mock dogfight”, included at least two fights between Su 27 and F15 as these jet fighters's characteristics are very similar and both American and Russian aces desired to test the planes of their potential opponents. All fights were won by Su 27 pilots. Ten years later, in 2002, one of the 94FS pilots, Tom Murphy, tried to annul the results of those mock dogfights stating that the fights were not held according to the fighter community rules and making up various reasons to explain the defeat of F15s. On their way back home Russian pilots almost lost both jet fighters as the engines on both aircrafts suddenly stopped working. The reason why the engines stalled was the American fuel quality. Russian Su 27s could not work properly as American operating personnel filled both Su 27s with unsuitable fuel, the density of which was much thinner than needed. On their way to the US border Su 27 pilots were told by American colleagues to fly over a thunderstorm. Having reached the altitude of 13 km both Su 27s started to fall down. The Russian pilots while preparing to eject asked American pilots accompanying Su 27s to the border to stay on the spot so that they could inform the rescue team about the location of the disaster that could've occured. The crew of IL 76 was unaware of the Su 27s' situation as IL 76 was going around the thunderstorm and was a long distance from the two Russian jet fighters. So, US F15 pilots were the only ones who could help. American aces just giggled in response and flew away keeping absolute silence. None of the pilots or the operating staff was sustained to any penalties later even though the accident was reported to their command. Luckily at the alt. 2-3 km Su 27s' engines revived.

Some issues I have with this documentary: They did not show us what really the lead SU designer thought about the western aircraft and failed to show or ask if he observed any weaknesses among the western jets. Berating the Soviet jets was all this documentary did, at 8:27 they talk about how poorly the Su27 handles when compared to the F15, they show a video of a Su doing a weird barrel roll, while at 28:13 they show a video of a smooth AF Su27 handling as good as the Western aircraft They failed to talk about the lethal R73 and the HMD that allowed the two Soviet aircraft to completely own all the other jets in a DF. They also failed to mention the deadly silent killer R27ET which can destroy a fast moving target 50km away (best case) without the missile warnings going off on the target aircraft. With the AMRAAM, you'd know that an enemy aircraft is there (because they have to turn on the radar to guide the missile) and when the AMRAAM goes pitbull you'll know that its going to hit you. Theoretically, both sides had equally well performing BVR missiles, with the AMRAAM taking the lead because of the very good platform that is the F15 that allowed multiple missiles to be launched at several targets. But the thing is, the Soviet jets did the same thing. I know for a fact that the SU33 at that time was designed with such capabilities because it had a better radar than the Su27s' IMO, the only way that the western aircrafts are better than the Soviet aircrafts is the multirole capabilities. All the western jets shown here are very capable precision strike bombers. It is here that sensor fusion becomes vital. The Soviet jets at that time could only do dumb bombs and rockets and nothing more and that is only useful when going up against the Taliban and ISIS.

what they really mean to say and keep hitting the point almost is that even 50 years ago with world war two the original migs were fun and hard to shoot down then and they are now.Both the u.s and Russia have made the best multi role fighters since world war 2

I like the fact that the US pilots let the MIG leading the pack,i'm sure,they want to have a good look at it in flight and discretely film the plane,from all angles..!!!,and i'm sure US pilots"secretly love RUSSIAN Fighter-Planes.

Just a note on the cobra. Swedish pilots first performed this maneuver in the Saab Draken back in the 1960's. You can find film of it online.

It is interesting the direction both air forces have gone! In America we have the F22 Raptor and the F35 joint strike fighter. Both are superlative aircraft although the thrust vectoring F35 joint strike fighter has serious reliability issues. I would have liked to see morww production of the F22, it's a pretty amazing aircraft! In the Russian air force we have the Suhkoy SU35. I have not seen any aircraft perform the aerobatics this fighter has! It's an exquisite design also featuring thrust vectoring. But it's manuverability that seems to be the strong suit. This aircraft has performed manuevers I thought were not possible for a modern aircraft even...impressive! The biggest diffenece now appears to be two things that put the American fighters on top...stealth technology and very advanced avionics and weapons systems. The Russians, now under extreme sanctions from the Ukraine war simply doesn't have the chips or electronics now to be able to compete in this area. Aircraft technology is not the only area affected by that loss of technology, they are getting "wasted" in many areas because they cannot produce systems as slick as American and European designs. We should however never discount Russian aircraft, for what they have they have produced a remarkably good aircraft in the SU35 considering how technologically behind they are.

The F-14 Tomcat was introduced in 1974 and was finally retired in 2006, so this documentary could be from way back to about 1978-79, not before this, the F-14 was brand new and the Navy do not like to show their new toy for, at least, three to four years before permitting the release of movie to the general public. One thing is for sure, the USSR fell in 1991, the Soviet constitution was dissolved BY Gorbachev and the Dumas and Boris Yeltsin became temporary president until the first free election in Russia. The Satellite Countries started to became independent after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November, 09 1989. Freedom Peace and Love to Humanity !

I noticed that Russian fighter pilots tend to be older then other countries pilots. In Russia you see a lot of pilots that are even around 50 and maybe even over 50 still flying fighter aircraft, of course there is young pilots in Russia too, but mostly it's the older pilots flying the better newer aircraft. I just wonder how well these older pilots can hold their G's and for how long?. In other countries pilots tend to be between 22 to 35, you do see older pilots from time to time but they don't fly in combat anymore and they tend to be between 35 and 40 years old, but they're usually just instructors or air Base commanders.

Ya we had the Soviets beat. Fast forward to today and we have even more amazing fighters that can even have fighter drones with it. Wow!
