it's really not that crazy. he's hitting a stationary vehicle that's way smaller than his own car, the change in velocity is only about 13 mph. the car being hit would probably have serious injuries.

I feel like you're a child and have never been in a car crash. I wouldn't say "extremely minor" since 13mph is quite a bit. If you are an adult, next time you're in your car, go 5mph and slam on the brakes as hard as you can, you can really feel it.

Just bear in mind that the kinetic energy is proportional to velocity^2. If you double the speed, energy of a moving car grows 4 times! So rapid change in velocity is not only a function of the change of the velocity. v2^2-v1^2 = (v2-v1)(v2+v1) where v2 is velocity after the impact and v1 is the speed before the accident. Reducing speed even by 13 mph means huge energy loss if a car goes fast.

Whether 10 and 2 is safe depends on the airbag, but even with modern advanced airbags it's on the borderline. Go above 10 and 2, like 11 and 1 or 12 o'clock, and that's really dangerous. With the first gen airbags from the 90's I wouldn't go above 9 and 3. With the modern airbags I would say 10:00 and 2:00 is the absolute upper limit, 10:01 and 1:59 is in the danger zone. I keep my hands around 9:30 and 2:30. I have a 2011 Honda Accord and when the airbag lid opens it hits the steering wheel between about 11 and 1. And wrapping thumbs around the wheel is a bad idea. The reason I keep my hands at 9:30 and 2:30 instead of something lower is that 9 and 3 is directly in the path of the top spokes of my steering wheel and anything lower, like 8 and 4 is just uncomfortable and harder to control the car. The worst I risk at 9:30 and 2:30 is maybe a minor powder burn from the airbag, I'll take the possibility of a minor airbag burn over being more likely to deploy the airbag from a wreck from not being able to control the car as well. Nowadays with the extreme cost of cars, it is completely feasible to repair a car that’s had a deployment and keep the policy going, and maintain a clean title. If the collision is minor enough, and the cost of replacing the airbag modules and reprogramming/replacing the controller itself isn’t prohibitive, then insurance won’t total a car with a deployment, let alone refuse to maintain coverage on it.

It’s because this man expected the collision, whereas in a real world scenario it would be less expected and the airbag would save you. He full well knew what was coming and intentionally caused the collision, so he had time to brace and avoid striking the airbag. In a true traffic collision you often don’t have time to even process what’s happening, let alone brace, so the airbag helps by slowing your forward movement and prevents you from head butting the steering wheel.
