Before learning how to use the airbrush, you need to thin your paints, or mix your lacquer paints with lacquer thinner. I will show you how to get the correct ratio and consistency without using any extra tools -- super easy!

In response to a common question, unthinned unopened lacquer paints in the original bottle seem to dry or seperate in 2-3 years, though if you shake it up well and thin as normal, you could still use it. Thinned lacquer paints (like shown in this vid) hasn't "gone bad" for me so far. I have thinned ones from 5+ years ago I can still use. Also, while factory thinner could bend a plastic bottle a bit, I haven't had one melt. Hobby thinner hasn't bent anything. Finally, this series won't cover acrylics or enamels.

Thanks a million for the response! I ask because I have heard in many places about the “dangers” of premixed paint. I have a bunch of pre mixed paints acrylics lacquers and enamels and the only thing I have to do is shake. Glass mixing balls make it a snap!

Thank you for this response! I recently purchase plastic dropper bottles to store my premixed lacquer paints. Hopefully they do not damage the bottles or affect the lacquer paints after months of storage. It’s been a few weeks and so far so good.

You can also use graduated mixing cups to mix your paint. Mixing paint does not have to be an exact science but 50/50 is a good starting point and you can always add more thinner if it's too thick.

I did what you told me and it turned out awesome!! You were right. The thinner the paint, the smoother the result and it keeps the details instead of the paint covering the whole area due to the thickness of the paint. Thank you!!

I watch a lot of these types of videos, picking up tips here and there. Every now and then, I get a tip that is staring me right in the face, and I cannot believe it didn't occur to me before. Decanting the paint to a larger bottle, then using the paint pot to measure out the correct level of thinner, is one of those tips. Thank you.

Hi Snow, do you notice any difference between IPP and Gaianotes in term of wear-resistance? This is my experience with them: I mixed the Gaia EX-08 Gold and IPP SP103 Superfine Titanium with the same Mr Hobby Leveling Thinner by the same ratio (1:1.5), then I spayed both paints over the same base (Mr Hobby Primer 1500 > Gaia Gloss Black), after the same drying time, the surface of EX-08 got scratched easily, while the surface of SP103 was totally fine.

These airbrush tutorial videos are exactly what I needed. QUESTION: If I mix a bottle of paint and thinner into a squeeze bottle, how long can I keep that paint in the bottle without it ruining? I may not need to use a lot of paint for a project and may have leftover. Is there a shelf life once it's mixed with thinner?

I know this vid is a little old but i was wondering how would you go about using a metallic thinner to thin metallic paints? Since i know most company’s metallic thinners dry faster. Would it still be recommended to pre thin metallics in the squeeze bottles?

What is the shelf life on mixed paint like this? I usually just mix a small batch and will often have to mix more just because I don't want to waste paint. I am however tired of doing that cause it takes up time. I've seen a lot of people saying 1:1.5 ratio or even 1.8 at the most is the suggested method to get a "milky consistency. I just wonder how long I can keep the paint for or if that's even a worry I should have.

As you see in the video, we keep all our thinner/mixed paints in those plastic bottles, even for a few years and it's fine. The only thing that has bent our bottles a bit are factory thinners, but the thicker plastic bottles seem to do ok w those. Check out this vid for more about the bottles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsmZgdmVrsvNlJ8.html
