After countless amounts of Airbrush tutorials that left me frustrated and still confused followed by nearly 2-years of fails , wasted paint , mixing fluids , and alot of scratching my head literally watching money atomise and evaporate in front of me - i pretty much gave up?... Fast forward to a few days of watching your straightforward videos on Airbrushing etc with no complicated bollox anywhere in sight and eureka! ..Today was spent digging out my Vallejo air paints , stripping down airbrushes for maintenance , and building a spray-booth for my studio!!! Thanks fella, You've been a huge help! Neilus.

Oh my GOD THANK YOU for easing my mind about the consistency. I literally just started with a pretty good set up and my biggest fear is clogging it even though I am very confident with diluting acrylics during my normal painting. My first few times spraying it seemed too thin but hey, it "looked like skim milk!" lol. Anyway this made me feel much better about experimenting, can't wait to watch the other videos! Thanks!

I loved and agreed with every word you said (I even have a video pointing out the problem with “milk” as a thinning goal, lol!). I’m an Iwata man myself...Harder and Steenbeck aren’t easy to get where I live, and I haven’t had good experience with Badger. Iwata is brilliant!

Thanks!!! Nice, I need to check it! When I started airbrushing the "milk consistency" was my nightmare XD. Yep in reality the perfect airbrush doesn't exist but it's a mix of what you can find and what suits your way of painting. I was talking few minutes ago with a Badger fan and now you tell me that you had issues with a Badger (and I never used one!): this is the perfect example!

@@MarcoFrisoniNJM there's a whole range of milk. What milk would apply? Cow's milk? Goat? Sheep? Horse? Skimmed? Low fat? Lactose free?...they vary in consistency I really hate this "advise" as well as "thin your paints, but it depends on the paint, how you thin it" and no instruction on how to achieve a good ratio

I think your advice here is 100% right on. I think I wasted a lot of time when I was just beginning painting a few years ago because everyone told me to learn to airbrush and I never learned regular painting with a brush first. It was an intimidating tool to learn all at once without foundations and discouraged me from painting more. I’ve had to go back and am trying to learn those skills better. One thing that is really helpful though even for me as a novice is doing zenithal highlighting to understand lighting.

Love the videos mate, please keep them coming! Good advice, all of it. Two points I would like to add: One: learn the techniques of airbrushing without thinking about miniatures. Learn the basic movements. Practice dots, lines, arcs & daggers - super thinned ink and a couple sheets of cheap artists paper is all you need. You won't typically use some of that on a miniature, however it teaches you control and builds muscle memory with your airbrush. Two: Anyone who tells you that "you have to have xxxxx airbrush/feature for miniatures" is flat out wrong. You can do it successfully with any brand and needle/nozzle size just fine. Use what you have and practice practice practice! The only bad airbrush is the one you have and don't use. The fine gentleman in the video alluded to both of these points - please listen to him!

Where do I begin? Let's see. Marco, Marco, Marco, hermano del pincel, fantastic video again! I do agree that the H&S Infinity CR Plus 2 in 1 is great, but, very fidgety to work with. I hate the drytip that is constantly happening, even at lower psi. I Iwatas are nice but way to pricey, especially for the micron. Of all the airbrushes I have and had I have to say that my absolute favorite airbrush is, my Badger Krome with my Xtreme Patriot as a second and backup. There absolutely nothing these two airbrushes can't do! Plus the parts are always easily available even online. Their needle/nozzle combos are interchangeable and come in even superfine needle and nozzle for detail work! So you can do work like the 20/20 Soltar on them as well I can't wait to see your video next week hermano del pincel! Ciao!

😁😁😁 I love to be an "hermano de pincel"! Thanks man 😉 Yeah my point is: there isn't a perfect tool for everybody and obviously I can review only the models I own or I tried that are only a drop in the sea of the possible choices (Badger and Patriots for example were very difficult to find in Italy when I started while H&S was largely available). But with some guidelines everybody can find the right tool for the right job!

As it turned out my temperament was more attuned to a more aggressive form of realism so a brush for me is like part of my hand. In fact I make a point f always using a brush much bigger than I think is appropriate. I can do with a #12 hogs hair what most need a 00 sable to achieve. It is all possible with practice. Re-watching in 2022, I ended up with Iwata HP-BH, H&S Evolution Squidmar, and H&S Kyiv Infinity, so the same set, just slightly more collectible and visually appealing. I really like the Infinity because of its aluminium body, not sure if yours has it. It feels almost twice as light as the Iwata. Also nice to know that I dodged some problems because Kyiv Infinity comes with a 0.2 mm nozzle instead of 0.15 mm nozzle by default. Afaik all three models can be easily converted between nozzle sizes, my H&S both have 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm needle, nozzle, and endcap sets in their boxes, and the HP-BH should be able to accept HP-CH parts, which are sized 0.3 mm.

A small question, it's commonly mentioned that double action airbrushes allow to control the amount of both air and paint, but isn't air regulated using micro air control and the compressor rather than using the trigger? I've heard some other painters saying that the trigger acts as an on/off switch only for air, and its primary function is to regulate paint.
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 3 жыл бұрын
You have full control over the air flow from the trigger!!! You just set the main pressure on the compressor, that's all you can do from there but all the fine work is totally made from the trigger. Those painters have cheap airbrushes or a poor control of the trigger 😉

They are very popular in illustration because they have the same efficient gravity feeding but usually they have larger cups or cups that you can quickly remove, switching instantly the colour; often the artist has multiple cups ready with all the tones he needs or there's an assistant preparing the new batch. Plus the lateral cup doesn't create visual blind spots on the vector of the spray!

Great video. I appreciate your honesty haha. Quick question, and maybe you'll cover this in a later video, what tools do you use to clean your airbrush? I bought some online and the airbrush tools i use to clean the chamber are pointy at the end and scratched the inside of my reservoir when I first was learning to clean it. Any suggestions for a better tool for cleaning out the chamber?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! I'll cover this in next part 😉. Yeah cleaning tools have to be tough to clean even the hardest residue of paint and they can damage the superficial coating; it's not really a big deal and this will happen a bit anyway cleaning after cleaning. Some scratches on the body or the loss of the superficial layer in some spots doesn't affect its work. The real trick is to lightly clean the airbrush every time you use a colour taking away the need of that kind of heavy cleaning (and I'll show you some tricks 😉 for this)

@MarcoFrisoniNJM

Awesome timing!!! It's a pleasure ;) It's not a stupid question and It's something I'll talk also in the next video! The thinner increases the watery part of the paint changing it's consistency but not its properties, drying time and transparency in particular because it's designed to evaporate quickly. Flow improver extend the drying time of paint and add a bit of body to the mix useful also for a good flow with the brush. They are used together to adjust the paint to your need of the moment

Hi Marco, you've become my favourite youtube channel by a long shot! So I'm about to pull the trigger on the Iwata HP-BH, but as my first foray into airbrushing I would love some quick advice: 1) As my 1st airbrush, would this still be great at priming/base-coating, or would it be hard work due to the 0.2 nozzle. Would a HP-CH 0.3 be a better overall pick for versatility or would the precision of the 0.2 outweigh this. 2) airbrush compressor: Any benefit to buying a twin piston instead of a single piston? Or would the lower PSI we generally work with mean a single piston is more than enough. Many Thanks!

Hi! Thank you soooo much!!! Usually I don't suggest the HP-BH to beginner airbrushers because it's like learn how to drive using a Ferrari, but after the first experiments you'll have in your hands one of the best tools on the market and you'll have a ton of fun! An 0.2 can do everything you need. 0.15 like H&S Infinity is good for small details but really frustrating for everything else and 0.3 can't do much for small precise blendings; 0.2 is the way! A single piston is more than enough for our small pressures and if you have to invest money is best to have a larger air tank that's a more interesting optional. Thanks a million for the kind thought 😊 but at the moment I don't have an affiliate account with Element Games

I am quite puzzled with many "double-action" airbrushes. Most of the so called "double action" airbrushes have a trigger that basically behaves like an on/off switch - Air On, Air Off. Then you pull the trigger back to control paint flow and you can control only paint flow. So, to me they are basically "single action" or at best "1 + somewhat meaningless action" airbrushes. Does the Does the Iwata (I assume it is a Hi-Line version) allows for air flow control using the trigger alone, without using the MAC? Or is it another so called "double action"?

Great video, thanks. Marco, I would like to ask you a question about zenithal and Liquitex inks, because I decided to try something like that after your videos. How long should the ink dry? I paint my warhammer nighthaunts with citadel hexwraith flame (by brush) over ink and ink is squandered. Usually acrylic dries quickly, but then I tried it after 20 minutes and after 40 minutes and still the ink dissolves when painted. What am I doing wrong?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million 😍! Here the problem is the wash of hexwraith flame. Inks take for sure a bit longer to be dry in the microscopic level but this not the case. The layer on ink is super thin and the wash is full of medium and other components that with the brush can move the pigments already on the surface; You need only to add to the process a quick coat of varnish on top of the zenithal black and white and you are good to go 😉

Great video as usual, but I disagree that you have to know about blending, glazing and all kinds of color theory and techniques before buying an airbrush. Using an airbrush is THE most efficient way of applying paint to a surface - you're literally using less paint to cover the same surface area. As a result, you avoid losing detail by not gooping on paint with a brush. At the least, you can Prime and set up your Zenithal paint job with the airbrush when first learning to airbrush. It also makes it faster to set up an entire army. An airbrush is also a better way of painting larger plastic models such as Warhammer40K vehicles and architecture. Also, having an airbrush affords you more possibilities. You're not restricted to what a spray can gives you - you can mix your own colors and an airbrush isn't nearly as messy; plus, the atomization is superior to a spray can...in most cases.
