I switched from a nearly new water-cooled 911 to my Golden oldie 993, to say i'm smitten is putting it mildly. When a grown man talks to his car you know the bug has bitten really hard. What makes the Air-cooled special? you ask... Its more involving having lived with a water-cooled car [997], its build quality will be the first thing to hit you in the face, then the sound of the car is unlike anything you can get from any water-cooled including 997 GT3 rs 1/2{both i have driven properly}, Its also more intimate(amazing the size of the newer cars), a lot less electrics to worry about, its all about you, did i say they are very visceral [massaging your soul with that unique engine note], the handbuilt nature, Last but not least, in the right colour {mostly light colours highlight the shape of the cars} insanely and wickedly beautiful.

The 996 - and models thereafter - were all mass produced compared to the older air cooled models, which also explains why an air cooled 911 are dearer than the newer water cooled models.

Hi, first I want to make you a compliment on this review. I really enjoyed watching it. I used to own two 911 G models for 15 years, and I drove about 300,000 km in them, even in snow in the mountains, and on a regular basis at top speed on the German motorway, so I am quite familiar with them. The air cooled cars were more spartanic than the modern cars. Now everyone can get in, start and drive away. That was different with the old school Porsches. To my opinion that makes them way more fun. Because you have to train yourself to handle the car and not let the electronics do all the work. These were sports cars. So you had to be fit to drive them and not only driving them fast as a couch potato doing a video game. It had the raw sound and not an artificial sound made by a sound engineer. Here in Europe the press presumes that electric cars are the future, but to my opinion sheer acceleration speed but driving a sewing machine on wheels is not, what I think, on the same emotional level as handling a spartanic car with a roaring engine. Even if it is objectively less fast. A few days ago I made a review about an Iso Rivolta Lele in Switzerland. It is winter at the moment, so I could not drive the car equiped with summer tyres to its limit. But that did not mind, because of the fantastic engine sound, in case of the Lele, a V8, it was a pleasure to drive. I think that goes the same for the roaring flat six cylinder air cooled engine of the 911, without ESP and ABS, because then you have to know how to drive!

There are multiple reasons why the air cooled cars are so revered. I think one key factor is the excellent build quality (particularly of the 993) in comparison to later cars; another is their compact size. My 993 is dwarfed by a 991! However, the real differentiators for me are1) the unique sound of an air cooled engine and 2) they have a completely different smell to their water cooled successors. This is something you either "get" or you don't. However, enough people do to value them accordingly.

Depends on how they are driven and where. I used to track my car in Colorado and had overheating issues in the summer. I eventually put in a front oil cooler and engineered it to run in series with the OEM oil cooler. Even after moving to Texas, I never, ever had issues again.

I think you really nailed it. They are a car that you just have to drive or ride in to appreciate. I can't tell you how many people I've taken for a ride In mine and they are just wow'd by the sound the feel and just everything about them. I have a 1967 911 RS clone with a 2.7 and 901 transmission and a 1978 SC hot rod with the 3.0 that has a hot cam and duel triple throat webers and the 915 gearbox. They are so much fun to drive and just different enough I never get bored. It's also fun to see the look on someones face when you can stay with or even beat a 2000's car in a 40-50 year old car! :) Keeps me young! Love your videos keep up the great work!!

I found your channel through the "I'm not crying you're crying" VW commercial where they restored Annie the '67 beetle. I've always wanted to have - or even drive - an old aircooled VW. Can't wait to binge on your archive - this is a great video and it's nice hearing you explain these cars. It's clear that not only do you know them inside and out, you have such a passion for them. Keep up the great work! :D

+1. .. Always enjoyable watching the Heidi und Franny's Garage posts; Never fails. .. In addition, the 911's lifeline starting in '63 concluding in '98 was for the most part evolutionary throughout the many decades. .. As an example, the cars greenhouse section (glass and roof) along with the doors are interchangeable from '63 thru '98 production. .. Not many cars are as evolutionary as the air/oil-cooled 911s. .. Cheers

I can't speak to Porsches but with the VWs I think there's an elegant simplicity to the cars that makes them both aesthetically pleasing as well as approachable in terms of one's ability to work on them. In the 6 months I've owned my Bug I've already done work on it that I'd be far more apprehensive about doing on a modern car. As new cars become more and more complex and thus inaccessible from a maintenance standpoint by their owners, older cars will become more and more desirable by car enthusiasts.

I think it"s not only the 'aircooled' that makes a difference. More the 'analog' driving with no electronics to support you when you drive. If you compare other classics with the older Porsches, Porsche give you the classic with good brakes & good handling and is up to modern speeds with not to much lack of 'comfort' . And the reliability is realy good. And of course the next generation is always the better car. For me the older Porsches are great drivers cars . And I hope we may enjoy them for a long time if you see the new developments with electric and the growing public ban for the older 'traditional' cars

Great video, really enjoy the work you both put in. I've been a Porsche fanboy since I was 13. The 911 became my favorite car as nothing looked, sounded and as I later found out drove like a 911! That still holds true for the water cooled cars, but boy do those air cooled engines really stand out!

There is a certain addiction to these cars. Owning one often leads to another. Sometimes it's a lifetime passion. My first was a '66 912, owned in college. Unfortunately I drove it in the New England winters and it rusted away in 7 years (Porsche didn't galvanize bodies until the '77 model year). Since then my wife and I have owned a '73 T, '84 cab, '87 Carrera, '88 turbo look, '89 25th anniversary, two '95's, and a '98 C2S. We upgraded to a water-cooled '02 996 turbo but soon sold it. (I'll never forgive myself for trading-in that C2S.) We sold our '95 968 quickly. The water-cooled cars are super fun, and certainly under appreciated. But there just is nothing like the air-cooled 911. Today I drive a '97 993 turbo...a driver's car with high mileage. I drive it all the time, and grin constantly. The best of the breed, IMO.

I love your "Air -Cooled" intro. Air Cooled Engines you get the growl of the combustion chambers through the cooling fins on the cylinders. Much like a Motorcycle or Aircraft Engine. When you add that Whirring Sound of the cooling fan it makes it a sound you can drive by. When they went to Water-Cooled I have been driving Mercedes.

Loved this video, I want an air cooled 911 so bad, a 993 c2 would be amazing. For right now I am really enjoying my 08 Cayman though. It is water cooled but the sound of that flat six is intoxicating! And the feeling of the five speed and its mid engine balance is also special I think. Hopefully one day I can afford a 911 but I won't trade my cayman, they will just look so good side by side 😀

Exactly the Ur - Cayman 987.1 has the best classic design of all the Porsche’s around and the mid engine is amazing the 2.7 base engine has even a better sound then the Cayman S and the 245 hp engine has enough power I drove a 911 2.4 S 190 hp air cooled in 1981 still affordable at that time about $ 8000,- and later a 911 Carrera 3.2 1988 in 2000 with the G50 gearbox price $ 15.000,- now they are both extremely overpriced yes the Porsche Ur - Cayman is the real deal in my opinion 😉
@obi-wankenobi7160

I agree! They are awesome and a great value, I like to hear that it sounds even better than the S. Is that because of the higher compression of the 2.7? I also think that the 2.7 is much more reliable than the 3.4 because of the cooling issues. Mine has currently 80k miles, just changed my water pump as preventative maintenance. I do my own oil changes at 5k intervals. It pulls hard and with the cat back exhaust from Soul it sounds glorious especially at 4k+.

First of all, I just want to say I love the quality and information in the videos you create - your cars are wonderful. Continuing to own Porsches over the years I would like to mention something that is rarely discussed pertaining to the air cooled cars (for those of you grew up with VW's in a cold climates please skip to next post as you already know everything I'm about to say). I'm eluding to heating and air conditioning (HVAC). Way back when, in my then new 911SC on a cold night, I couldn't expect much cabin heat until I came into a town, slowed down and put some revs on the engine to let the heat exchangers catch up. Similarly, as I recall, defrost was more or less akin to a panting hamster on the dash. My girlfriend always complained her hands were too cold! A/C was not really a standard 911 offering, I didn't have A/C, but of course back then many cars didn't. The bottom line is, if all you can afford is a 1985 Accord please rest assured you probably have better HVAC than most air cooled Porsche owners. I have so much sentiment attached to the air cooled cars, but today the comfort and astounding performance of a modern water cooled flat 6 is where I feel most at home. Lastly, turns out the girl back then with the cold hands also had a warm heart - she accepted my proposal and we still enjoy drives together.

Great discussion, Franny.Much of my maintenance was initiated by your excellently presented videos! I own a 2001 996 turbo and for the money I have never owned a more thrilling car. When released the 996tt was approaching super car status. What other car can you drive and pick up groceries in Phoenix when it's 110 completely comfortable with the a/c blowing full blast. then rip through the gears and push your eye balls back with staggering acceleration; and the handling? I've been saved by the ever so brief electronic intervention when exploring my limits a few times. Super reliable, a bombproof motor, Easily worked on. Thank goodness the PCA mafia hated the headlights because the 996 is still affordable...for now. At some point everyone will realize the 996tt bang for the buck. I'm sharing your channel aggressively.

An interesting question. It has a complex answer as there are many points to deal with. Collectibility, power output, engine tolerances, cost of maintenance, sound etc (which was dealt with very nicely in the video, great soundtrack!). Weight is something to think about as well. The engine after all is a long way back. All these problems have been addressed by Porsche very well over the years as speeds increased. Early models were 'interesting' to drive on wet uneven twisty roads. But! My goodness, they do drive don't they! For me though, handling benefits and sound would be why they are so special. Also of course air cooled motors have not been too rare in motoring, if you are prepared to give up two wheels, comfort and staying dry in bad weather 😉. A lovely video again. Thank you ladies. John UK.

Amazing Porsches. The 80's 911 is probably the most iconic but the 993 is the absolute pinnacle of the brand, in my opinion. That car is just pure perfection. PS: I love your channel, I've been watching these videos all day. Keep up the good work and greetings from Finland.

I was born in 1951 and my father owned a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle and a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle which were air cooled engines. My father used to call the Volkswagen Beetle the poor mans Porsche. I have seen from these videos that the Porsche 356 has an engine that looks a lot like the engines used in the Volkswagen Beetle.

Excellent video Franny highlighting the differences, i personally love the 964 and 993 series as the most analog and fun but my old 997 GT3 was pretty incredible and one car i regret letting go along with my 993 TT i sold before the market exploded. I have been looking to acquire another older air cooled car but the prices are just insane for good cars.

Air cooled, in my area these just aren't all year cars. The VW's, Harleys everything air cooled will have cooling problems here. Vapor lock sitting on side of road waiting for it to cool to try and make it home LOL man the memories! I still love the air cooled Porsche and will own one, but it won't be my first. Looking at 996 and up for my first. I want to drive my car everyday not just weekends and cooler weather :). I think you touch on why the air cooled is so much in demand with the craftsmanship and the ease of repair work for sure! The cars are so basic and mechanical that you feel connected to the experience of driving. I truly have enjoyed 2018 watching your videos and cant wait to see what 2019 will bring! Have a great safe holiday!

Ha! Here's something funny: the only time I've come close to over-heating the 3.2 was in 30degF weather heading up to drive on a frozen lake! The one thing it does NOT like is up-hill stop and go for an hour... The 356 will run a tad warm in over 100deg at 75mph with the top down. Good luck with your 996 hunt! I saw a lot of nice cars when researching values. Just get that IMS serviced and you are good to go! They are fast and nimble and super usable as a daily. Add C4 or C4S and a great winter car as well. Thanks for watching! We really appreciate it! Lots of super cool things planned for 2019! Happy Holidays!

Great video! For me the biggest distinction is simply that the older 911s have a personality that is totally distinct from any other car. Our 83 SC is shorter, lighter, has no power steering, ABS or traction control, etc., and is of course also slower and without any modern conveniences. The more modern 911s are longer, heavier and, as a general rule, softer in nearly every respect - they are still tons of fun to drive, but there really is very little to distinguish them from many other sports cars in terms of personality and driving characteristics. If someone wants a modern Porsche that still has its own personality, my vote goes to the Boxster / Cayman platform, they may be water-cooled but they still reflect the personality and tradition of Porsche.

Another great review Franny. I just love the old air cooled cars and the analog sound of the boxer engines. I believe that while we call them air cooled it’s actually the oil that draws some of the heat out of these motors.

I remember paying careful attention to the oil temps in my 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 liter car, especially in the summer time. The oil is what cools the engine. The big fan draws in the air and dissipates the heat.

I have a 2002 Boxster S and a 1984 911 Carrera. I love them both, but the 911 is really special. I love the feel of the car when driving, the sound and the view down between the two fenders. I bought the 911 in 2003 and modified it for PCA racing. I quit racing in 2011. I didn't know what I wanted to do with the car. I got it back on the road as a classic car (still with race seats, cage, etc.). Last spring I decided to have it restored in an outlaw style. It should be done soon and I can't wait to get my hands back on it. It's going to be beautiful.

when I got my '76 911S, I added additional oil cooler in passenger front wheel well. It was the thinking at the time that the cooling was more oil cooled than air cooling (certainly the air cooled the oil cooler). I'm a traditionalist; liquid cooled cars are heavier because of all the fluid they have to carry around. But then, i'm old...…..traditionalist; off topic, Enzo Ferrari once said that the only true Ferrari has 12 cylinders or something to that effect.

Another famous Air-cooled car is a classic Fiat 500. I love my 1972 500 which is crazy fun to drive with the tail moving around in much the same way as early Porsche! The lack of water-cooling with leaky pipes & heavy water-filled radiators to shift makes the air-cooled cars lighter & sound great. I’d choose air-cooled every time but now cars have to be Euro 4 compliant on emissions so water cooling has won out for now!

Hi, nice review about this Porsche trio, well in my opinion, they are special not only to be aircooled systems, but desing, and a very long time used traditional lines that I considered way more atractive than modern Porsches, that in the end still being one the few models that keep preserving the familiar porsche desing. Well, in general old cars desing shapes were something special (imo), modern cars can be faster, technological and mechanically advanced and safer, but most of them are not so pretty, and it goes for motorcicles too, I can use (beautiful) when I refer to an old automobile, as there were really masterpieces and not only talking about desing, but mechanical aspect too, and as a driver you were very connected with driving and all that it involves, now modern vehicles are turning into smart mobile devices too... Kind regards :-)

It's unfortunate that the cost of air cooled Porsches have increased so much that 'graduating' from VWs of the same era is not really feasible. i regret not buying one years ago but at that time i was all VWs all the time. I do think the Caymans have potential but really? it's still not the same not being air cooled.Nice vid.

Did we say 99? We know better than that. You are correct, the Boxster I know was introduced in 97 (as was the 911). Franny probably misspoke. I can't believe she said that. Of course the IMS bearing is also what makes 996 and 986's so crazy affordable too. Heidi

if you are really on and about air-cooled, i would like to see it being traced from the prewar period down to porsche's vw designs and his own 356, 911, etc. Might take a couple of episodes or an otherwise longish video but it should be worth it. Also perhaps some interviews with porsche engineers and designers on how it went when switching from air to water cooled.

I'm so glad you mentioned the center console. Can you please do a video about why every car and truck made today has a massive center console? Why is every car maker unable to think independently and break this trend? Look at all the cars and trucks made a few decades ago and you'll notice that center consoles were only found on sports cars, but today they are in every car made, including luxury cars like Cadillac and Lincoln. With the exception of sports cars with a stick shift, center consoles are completely unnecessary, they steal valuable interior room, and they are a safety hazard, which prevents people from entering or exiting the car from either side door. This is especially true if you don't want to step into oncoming traffic on a busy city street to enter or exit the vehicle. It seems the main reason for a center console is to provide cup holders, an armrest, or storage space, but all of these functions can be accomplished by a slide out cup holder from the dashboard, a fold down armrest from a front bench seat, or a slide out center drawer from the bottom of a front bench seat. With today's smaller cars it makes sense to get rid of the center console to gain more interior room.

Paul 124 i would agree with the cup holder theory. It is truly amazing that it it so critical to people now days. They also want a charging station for their cell phone. I do not think they will go away.
