Used to love looking down on Tucano flying lowing level but above the clouds when hiking in low flying area. I am a great fan of the Belfast aircraft built by Shorts. Reference medicals, not being a six footer, when I had a RAF medical the issue was whether I had the potential reach to be able to pull the canopy back. I don’t think we should have bought the A400.

Had a chance to fly in a Tucano while I was at RAF Cranwell as a cadet, missed out though :(

Gutting much? How do you get a chance like that an then miss it?
@SgtSteel1

@@Farweasel Very much so. There was an interview process for the 3 cadets that had done the most work during the week. I was there. I lost out because when they asked me "Why should you get the flight?" I cockily answered "Why not?" The interviewing officer did say he liked my ballsy answer though. I remember it like it was yesterday. edit: just to confirm, I was in the cadets but not AT Cranwell, our cadet squadron was only there for a week.

@@SgtSteel1 Hell of a way to loose youthful enthusiasm - You'd have supposed if they had three keen notably cadets they'd have blagged a flight for all of you. Win one loose two. Genius. Everyone who read it is going to feel for you and the other bloke.

Yeah, would reckon so. Totally the sort of guy you'd want on your team. Mind you, most of the folk Mike rounds up to take part in the series have that sort of style about them. Starting to suspect it kind of gets selected for and then encouraged through their career experiences?

Raises a few questions about the quality of Shorts work that they have been built with such wide margins!

Indeed. I was surprised when he said it have high torque effect on yaw, because the original Tucano had the engine mounted at a angle (plus a huge fin/ruder), to minimize that effect. I guess they messed with that too.

@@magoid I believe the RAF fitted a different engine, which may explain it. Very interesting though, I wasn’t aware that the original design had removed the torque effect.

@@MilitantOldLady there are cultural traits that say in a nation. Building and then allowing a aircraft to roll off the production line with such vast differences. Didn’t happen overnight. So perhaps if the titanic was built in Germany. Where working to the 3rd decimal place is expected when doing ones tax returns. The titanic would have been built proper. And could withstand the impact from poor captaincy.

Oh god, i'm sorry but i just can't respect this plane. Be it Pilatus, Tucano, whatever....they're just a joke. If you want a first time ever trainer, fine. But the nations that use these as actual combat aircraft is just cringe.
