@@garys_stuff Thanks Gary,have you considered doing a heavy bomber in 1/48 scale? I have 3 vintage B17 kits in that scale waiting to be done Plan is to suspend them from the ceiling in a bombing run…..not sure the Missus is on board with that idea quite yet! @@stuartwebster829 just one thing - I've been looking at the B-17 again and something puzzles me - where does the exhaust get vented? I assume it went through the supercharger bodies, but does it vent immediately after that or does it go somewhere else? Just curious as it's not immediately obvious on the kit! Cheers, Gary

I should say on the subject on representing weathering on models,I think it is very much a matter of choice and individual preference.When I was refreshing my memory and looking through pictures of numerous B17’s,what struck me was how different many of the aircraft looked through age,repair,maintenance,different shading on replaced panels etc etc so really no right or wrong on what the modeller decides to add or leave off. The Wellington is a great kit these days - really well made and detailed.

Thanks! I use Vallejo model wash - normally 76.518 black. I use a fine brush and go along the panel lines with it - slightly diluted but the amount changes between models. With this metallic finish there was no need to clear coat first, but normally it will be either matt or satin as I find gloss makes the wash bead too much. Hope that helps!

Hi Vikesh - personally I'd suggest trying something in between first. The B-17 has a lot of fiddly bits inside, and it is disheartening if you don't get it right! Airfix rate it at level 3 (out of 4), so I'd suggest maybe a level 2 kit first. Something like the very good Bristol Beaufort or, if you want something American, the B-25 Mitchell. Both have interior details and gun turrets to build and install, but not quite at the level of the B-17! If you do decide to go straight to the B-17, then I'd strongly advise taking your time at every step. Be happy with what you've done before moving on, because if something isn't right now it can cause many problems later. Oh, and dry fit before using glue!!!

I'd start with the Tiger first, then maybe get another small plane to practice on (a starter kit from Aldi or Lidl would be ideal) before going on to the B-17. It's not impossible to do but you might want to practice a few things first, like controlling how much glue you use! If possible get hold of something like Revell Contacta or Humbrol Precision Poly Cement as these have thin metal tubes to dispense the glue. The tube you get with the Tiger set lets out a lot of glue if you're not careful and that can ruin things! I'd also get hold of some modelling snips to take the bits off the frames and some sanding sticks (or disposable nail files). You can get things like this is packages with a cutting board and all sorts of other things very cheaply online. Look for "modelling tool sets". I think for your first kit start out with something simple like a starter set spitfire (that's how my hobby kicked in), But make sure to keep good care, until i built my Lancaster B.III i just chucked them and played round with them until they are now completely unpresentable, now I have wasted money on these (im only young inspiring modeler so not a large budget... also just looking for tips and tricks for details.) nut i hope you have a great time moddeling!
