Another cracking build son 👏. I've got the Revell 1/72 Me 262 B-1a/U1 Nightfighter I must see what it's like compared to the Airfix version. I built the Heller version back in the day but I broke the antennas. Keep up the great work Gary 👍

Lovely build Gary. I'm a bit like you in that I love doing captured markings and 'what-if's' - let's face it Eric 'Winkle' Brown had plenty to do in testing these aircraft come the end of the war!

I'm gobsmacked at the amount of hidden assembly details in modern kits. The way that sub-assemblies snap into place, sometimes even needing a modicum of brute strength and ignorance to get the snap. The way that cockpit tubs are detailed and assembled makes me shudder when I remember trying to put the pilot's seat on a couple of subby pegs when building a 1970s kit discovered in an antique or Oxfam-like shop. I can see that compared to the Aussie 75 cent asked for those kits in the 1960s, the modern price of up to $AUD50 for a 1/72 scale kit is not due to the ravages of inflation, but an indication of the vast advances in the planning and designing of the injection molds. The availability of aftermarket items like decals, filler putty and canopy masks brings these models almost to, nay up to, museum standard. Nice build, by the way.

Boy, this certainly isn't an Airfix bagged kit. 😂 It's been eons since I've built a 1:72 aircraft but the fit on thins kit is excellent. The detail is terrific, even to the antenna. If you don't,/ want to build just another fighter, this night fighter is a great opportunity . Nicely done, Gary!

Hi Gary, thank you for build vid, now that your skills are of a high skill set, could see your way to doing a video on the mottle camouflage, like air pressure, paint to thinner ratio, I have tried this a few times and yes rubbish you make look very easy, looking forward to your comment.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 6 ай бұрын
Hey Jim, I used 1:1 paint to thinner with the Tamiya XF and X-20A, the brush was running at 1.4 bar or about 20psi. The single most important thing is the thinning of the paint I think. With XF it's pretty simple, but with others (yes, I'm looking at you Vallejo) the thickness of the paint is so variable it's really difficult to get a consistent thinning.
@jimbraiden2094

Thank you Garry, I do use Vallejo model air and yes some do spray strait from the bottle and some need a lot of thinner.

I enjoyed this one a lot, I have this kit in my stash, me 262 is a fabulous lookin fighter. I use also Mr Dissolved Putty for minor gaps and seams. But as it dries almost transparent, I pour some black Mr Surfacer 1500 into to the jar, they're compatible, although not exactly the same stuff. It's easier to sand when you see the putty.

I think the Me-262A single seater was the best looking plane ever before the Hunter arrived IMHO. I love the brutishness of the Sea Fury / Tempest II but for sheer "that'll fly like a dream" looks the Me-262 had it all. With decent engines and production capacity...

Hi Gary, at about 8 minutes you start filling gaps in your me109z! Were those ejector pin marks on the cockpit panels, or simulated swages. There seem a lot of them. A pretty result.

Nice job indeed. My favourite aircraft. Since I only do 1:32, I have all 4 models that were ever available in that scale in my stash. Seeing your finished model, I am getting motivated to do one of them as a change...maybe not the 1974 Revell kit nor the 1987 Hasegawa "conversion" kit...not sure yet...

If you do the Revell kit, get plenty of filler and sanding sticks in stock. I did it wheels-up; my biggest error to date 😂 but a great scale/size for an epic paint job; really enjoyed painting it. But Revell, never again.

The kit looks very good and the build video the same. I like the notes on the airbrushing (pressure set @ 1.4 bar) & on the thinning of the paint. One question on the putty; do you wipe the excess off after application or is the sanding stick called for? Was surprised by the switch to the BF109Z for that section but it is a generic subject. 😀
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 6 ай бұрын
I normally leave putty and filler to set fully then sand it down. the main exception is something like a wing fillet joint where it would be difficult to sand later because of the angles involved, or if there is a lot of surface detail the sanding would remove.

I certainly hope they didn't load any ammo for the nose guns, otherwise might be a bit self defeating of its radar purposes. Looks like the design team did a good job making it an easy build. Well done 👍.

Unlike the day fighters,the Nightfighter was to feature reduced arms, instead of 4x30mm cannon it was proposed to use 2x20mm, Or 2x30 mm cannons, firing forwards. This was to compensate fir the weight of the radar and second crewman.

How did you get the "waxoyl underseal" effect on the undersides? Was that a post-capture application because of the salt on the British roads?

I'm a little confused. Do you apply glue and then tape the seam, or do you tape the seam and then apply glue? If the latter, do you risk the tape attracting glue through capillary action and ruining the finish?
@paulcorrigan649
@paulcorrigan649 6 ай бұрын
It depends on how stable the seam is mate. Some hold together well enough to glue then clamp/tape. Others need the tape on to hold it together well enough to get the glue on
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 6 ай бұрын
For most fuselage or wing sections, I'll use regular glue (Contacta) on the alignment pins then tape the thing up. Then I apply extra thin to the joint. Where possible I use thin strips to help locate and hold the part. Then, when that is done, I may add more tape to hold the piece in the final position, the extra pressure also helps the weld on the joint. Yes, too much extra thin on a joint does indeed risk the glue going under the tape! Another thing I'll do is add the extra thin to the back of a joint where possible - like when a fuselage goes together you can access the back of joints through the cockpit, or wheel wells.

No, I don't hate you mate but here's the thing, they are cut that way - on both sets the blue is cut to fit the front of the fin and not the red. I don't know if there is a reference for this showing some mistake made at Farnborough, but I had to check and double check the decal sheet! It's the same on the instructions too.

It would appear that Airfix have made a mistake with the fin flash. I have found a picture of the real aircraft that was captured,with the code 12 on the nose and even though it is in black and white, you can tell that the colour at the front of the fin matches the centre of the roundel ,which is red.
