I am sure the old Airfix 1/72 mustang was in the same Swedish squadron markings. I was looking for the kit for ages and know I final have it

This Airfix kit was my last build, as RAAF 3SQN. I’ve built the 1:48 Meng kit as the RAAF 77SQN scheme B of this boxing- my final squadron posting. Both kits are brilliant for different reasons- Meng for the seamless fuselage, Airfix for their wonderful air scoop arrangement. Both are wonderful kits.

One small point about the US decal option: Airfix have omitted the large Black lettering of "U.S.A.F." which goes on the upper and lower wings opposite to the Stars and Bars - this was the standard from 1948 thru to circa 1959 and was still seen into the sixties. Plus do NOT use the Larger cylindrical tanks- they were made of pressed paper, and hence painted and were a strictly one time use, and they were pulled out of production before the end of WW2. (they did not react well to warm tropical climates.) IMHO the best kit to get of all the Airfix boxings is the Early D-5, (the one sans Tail fillet). You can make any wartime D model, early or late and replacement props for the Aero Products or Hamilton Standard (Cuffless) are readily available in the Aftermarket, as are literally hundreds of AM decals. BTW Tamiya also produced a F-51D boxing of their kit, I know as I have built 2 in the past. Nice IBR to go one with... and yes I have this kit too!

I had juuuust enough coffee ☕ to backup the video at 13m37s and turn on the Caption. "Swedish F-16 stencils are indeed in Swedish" 😂🤣😁 kit bashing and scratch building this week 😜 I'm kidding!! It happens! LoL Do like the Swedish markings also. Can see what you meant about not quite as crisp with those close ups. Looked like a tad of flash but not jump out at you amount? Wondering if the Swedish prop was a heated Hartzell (spelling?) and that was the difference between the two. Cheers and looking forward to seeing how you get on with the NMF

Airfix kits are becoming so expensive that it defies belief. The cheapest Eduard P-51d Weekend is 15.60 on hannant's, and these Airfix P-51s are 28.99. You can get an Eduard Profipack for 29.20.

Another one iv got in my stash to probably never be built lol.

Comprehensive overview, Gary. Nice decals, good instructions. Both styles of drop tanks (remember, the cylindrical tanks are painted silver, the teardrops are actually aluminum), the closed gear doors are a nice option, and the separate control surfaces and fin are nice options. We'll see what you think of the crispness as you build, paint, and weather the beast. Cheers!

While I believe you that the molds my not be as chrisp and sharp (like you said...maybe it was an overused mold)...I still think it looks pretty good. But...I've been watching you do models since you started (I think) and what I believe is that YOU are getting much better and you have a higher standard than you used to. So I think your reaction is good. Maybe its time to do a more complex and higher detail leveled kit. Maybe switch to a 1/32 kit done over 2 weeks for a week and see how you like the bigger and more detailed kit. Just a thought. And as always thanks for all the content.

Superb update as always Gary - I have the Airfix MkIV in my stash, so guess that will be pretty similar. That pilot is pretty poor indeed for 1/48 scale, the face looks more like one of Tolkien's Orcs, guess I have got that one to come too when I open it ... 🙂 I am looking forward to seeing the build video tomorrow ... can you paint it in the ... 'Army of Sauron' ... scheme ...🙂

There's something strange with the pilot figure. The face looks very familiar and it's blown up about twice the normal size it would usually be in the instructions ! Maybe Airfix has a sense of humor after all !!!
