In the 70s i would get a 1/24 scale plane for christmas and in January my dad and i would build it.. For me it was painstakingly slow, my dad was really fussy, humbrol paints, liquid poly, files no weathering but lovely build. We got the stuka, spitfire, harrier, me109... Superb memories. Thanks

David R Lentz, USA This kit is far more detailed, and those details far sharper, than I had heard of these Airfix kits. Excellent job, so far! Very impressive!
@josephstabile915413 күн бұрын
Great work, Greg! I know this is only part 1, but I have seen all your parts to this build, and watching them all was a joy, seeing you do justice to this magnificent kit. The kit. What amazes--and disappoints--is that the pinnacle was reached by Airfix, and never surpassed by all the other companies, in the '70s, no matter the scale. And then, Airfix resets the benchmark with this subject in 1/48 in the 2010s! In 1/24, this kit may show its age in some "modern" detail moulding: no slide-molded gun barrels, exhausts, no landing gear leg forks, seat belts (albeit, the crew is wearing them). All this pales in comparison to what the kit has in loads of ACCURATE detail: raised & recessed rivets (has ANY other manufacturer done this properly?), spot-on prop blades cowl and spinner, accurate & believable elevator & flap controls/linkages, moveable control surfaces, INCLUDING elavator horns, CORRECT canopy framing. That all other companies can't get these often nearly impossible to correct details right, 20, 30, or 50 years after Airfix's release is ridiculous & inexcusable. What detail Airfix didn't offer is easily added. But, correct detail, shapes & outlines--spot on! To me, every other Ju-87 kit manufacturer has been more or less disappointing. Who knew, we peaked with Airfix in Ju-87 kit perfection in 1975, 9.5 out of 10!😮

Totally blown away by what you are doing with a 40 year old kit! That engine work impressed me by my God not as much as the cockpit! Yuuussss!! The only "superkit" I never got as a kid (or adult for that matter)... twenty or so of the Hurricane over the years, but no Stuka. This is gonna be extra awsomesauce. That pale blue Airfix plastic was the best stuff ever- wonder why it changed and never came back? Was probably radioactive or had heroin in it or something....
@ThreenaddiesRexMegistus3 жыл бұрын
Heroin? Say, you just might be onto something there: no wonder I got so addicted to building these as a lad! But yes, their plastic was tough and quite workable. So much so that I worked the BF-109 pilot into tropical kit with a Swann-Morton scalpel and it worked well. Also built the SM-79 around 1974 and it was a neat model of an often ignored plane. This about the time I’d worked out how to spray paint with a hole punched in the Humbrol lid , ball point pen tube inserted and blew over the top with the barrel of the pen. Crude but effective and I think airbrushes were big bucks or just unavailable. Airfix made the hobby available, cheap and fun for many of us then. And you could knock one off in a weekend, filled joints, masking and all. Unlike the hyper-detailed stuff now. Then girls and motorcycles got in the way! Sometimes..........
@thepumpkingking83393 жыл бұрын
I got this kit back in the very early 80's. But never finished it, mainly because I used to much of the early cement on the wing joint of the gull part and it melted the plastic so much that the wings would not stay on. Cant wait for part two. :-)

This kit is so far my favourite build. Just as well because I somehow ended up with 3 of 'em! I'd like to pass on a recent discovery of mine, U.V. activated adhesive (5 Second Fix) is an excellent alternative to C.A. It hasn't fried any plastics I've tried it on, it sets clear & doesn't cloud transparencies. I've also used it over instrument decals to simulate their glass faces. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for a very nice build video! That rivet detail is quite common. Round head rivets are quicker to do since you don't need to do any countersinking. The designers use flush rivets on the leading part of the wing where they hope to maintain laminar flow. A bit in over the wing the flow turns turbulent anyway so you might as well use round heads.
@josephstabile915413 күн бұрын
Round head rivets are, or, at least, can be, stronger than flush rivets, sometimes more important in design.

@Baz Bazdad Indeed Baz, I do not trust my memory so much because I was about 6 or 7 years old and because something in my mind blocks most of my bad memories (and by that time I had many) What I do remember perfectly is that the first model that I bought and assembled myself, it was an Airfix 1/72 Me 110, in 1979. And I never painted it. After a few months, I started to paint others, mostly Italeri , with Humbrol enamels.
