In my area, I learned of a situation where the heating airflow was blocked to two bedrooms and a bathroom. After some investigation, it was found video cameras and video recording equipment stuffed into the ductwork was impeding the airflow to those rooms. It is alleged, the mother's boyfriend had installed video cameras to see the inside of two bedrooms occupied by two minor daughters of the mother and also view the inside of the bathroom those two daughters routinely used. I'm limited what more I can say, the matter has been taken up in court.

At least it was an easy repair! I had a job once as the Site Resident for a mountain top observatory. Big telescopes with dormitory buildings for the visiting astronomers and I did lots of handyman work. There was a complaint about the heat not blowing in one bed room. Weird thing was it would start to blow, then stop. Long story short, I found a big stack of porn magazines had been hidden in the duct. When the blower cycled on a magazine would flip a page over and cover the vent.

I found a lot of restricted vents from a combination of failures by the previous renter and the painter. The intake filter had partially collapsed into to HVAC unit. I would guess that it had been that way for awhile as witnessed by the coating of dust inside. I vacuumed all that I could get and what I could of the fan. I fired it up and still measured low flow so to the vents. I got up on the ladder and never even started to pull the grate and seen what looked like a piece of paper or something on the inside of the grate. Took it loose and it had a heavy layer of hair and dust that had been spray painted and caused a restriction to flow. After going through the apartment and cleaning the vent grates and as far as I get in the ducts I recommend that the landlord call a contractor that does ductwork cleaning. I hope no one living the has problems with allergies.

Had a call a.c. coil freezing constantly. Defrosted evap.and turned back on. Found very low suction at unit. Checked and found low airflow. Went around the house and removed return air grills and found cloth taped behind each one. Removed all the cloths in grills and rechecked operation and found everything came back to normal. Turns out the new tenants were not aware of what the last tenants did.

A guy I knew who was also in the trade gets a call for bad smells from the ductwork when the furnace came on. He’s looking everywhere, checking the furnace, the A coil for something, anything before he start going further into it all. He goes outside on the back porch for a smoke and sees a bowl with pet food by the door. He goes back in and asks the lady if she had any pets. She says “yeah, a cat but we haven’t seen it for about a week”…. Guess where they found the cat, or the former-cat…?

Had a similar issue, but it wasn't airflow. It was the obnoxiously loud banging noises from the AC fan outside. Guy opened it up and found half a dozen rats that had been chewed up by the fan, and a good dozen more that had been there quite a while. Apparently they found a way in around the electrical connections and thought sitting on the blades was a nice sunny perch where the birds couldn't reach them... Once we removed the corpses I put hamster cage wire around where the lines went in, and around the wall where they had managed to chew - THROUGH BRICK! - to access the space between the facia and weatherboard (about 2") and that gave them access to the basement. Now I go through once a year at the end of summer and drop pellets of poison down between the studs. Have to put up with the occasional stink in the basement but no more rats.

@amzarnacht6710

I do that in unused rooms in the house. Closing the louvers doesn't really stop the flow, so a bit of cardboard and a brick works fine. When I want to use the room, or just air it out, remove the stuff and it's good (all of the airflow vents are in the floor, air returns in the ceiling).

A restaurant a block away from my apartment was closed down by the police about 15 years ago - it was found to be a "front" for selling drugs. The people involved went to prison, and the owner of the building rented the space to a new tenant who opened a new (legitimate) restaurant. A friend of mine had a small construction company and he was hired to remodel the place to the new tenant's design. As he was doing the initial demolition, he found a brick of cocaine in a cold air return duct, about a kilo - 2.2 lbs. He called the police and they came and took it away.

3:07 - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. NICE! I actually met her once, around 2003. She had just performed a free concert at the casino I worked for, and she was on the floor playing slots. The booth I was assigned to that night was the only one that had direct line-of-sight view of the stage in our free concert area, and my cashiers and I all knew her hits, and had been kinda singing along and grooving, and even getting the patrons waiting in line clapping their hands and singing the chorus during the breakdown of "I Love Rock and Roll." She actually saw us from the stage while performing, and when cashing out (we still had coins in the machines back then) she thanked us for being "the coolest coin booth of any casino" she'd ever been in. Definitely one of the highlights of my twenties! I, like others, think the most possible scenario is the pillow was used to block the ducting to unused rooms for energy savings. It seemed to be the perfect fit for the job... I bet the previous owner patted it gently and said, "That ain't goin' nowhere."

A pillow is an effective and cheap way to shut off a needed vent. The homeowner was probably trying to get more airflow in other rooms. I keep the vent off in a spare room to get more heat in my bedroom.
@londonsapphire1326
@londonsapphire1326 4 ай бұрын
I was closing two vents in u used bedrooms thinking the same as you, but my brother (HVAC guy) said not to do that because it makes the furnace work harder cuz the cold/warm air still has to travel through the duct work to the blockage so that will wear your system out quicker.
@sproctor1958
@sproctor1958 4 ай бұрын
@@londonsapphire1326Plus, the insulation in those rooms is in the outside walls. None in the walls between rooms. When you leave those rooms "unconditioned", it seeps into the rest of the house much faster. And, the system is still sized to handle the entire house. When rooms are closed off, it is still using the full size of the unit to heat/cool less area... less efficiently.

Years ago I had a rambler and a gas furnace. The place had single pane rattling windows. I covered the hallway back to the bedrooms to trick the thermostat to think the whole house was up to 70 degrees. The bedrooms stayed cooler for sleeping but not cold also the bathroom. It saved on my gas bill a lot. I suspect someone did not want to heat those unused bedrooms in the back and stopped the air to them.

I was investigating a low airflow situation once, and I pulled the return duct off and found a rubber child's ball in the coil. It was a thick rubber, about the size of a youth basketball, and not terribly light. The funny thing was the unit was in a second floor utility space, and the return was on the first floor. All that for a pillow? Gee, I usually just close the vents if I don't want airflow.

Was gonna say... when the previous tenant leaves things in in air ducts... there's a high likelihood of it ending up in a evidence bag. It's almost more interesting someone just didn't want the airflow. lol

2:10 well there your problem also ladybird 🐞 but how the heck dose that end up there in the first place and you not notice it? I mean I’ve found some old rags and tees that got dumped under the floorboards when the council (I live in the UK) hired cowboy workers to do the central heating plumbing, they left all kinds of crap under the floorboards from bits of old pipe and wires to tees and cigar buts it’s a wonder there hasn’t been a fire but this home in the video tryout would think they would have noticed what looks like work pants shoved in their heating vents, I didn’t find may crap till I had to pull the boards to try and run internet cables in the house but that’s under floorboards that don’t need to have airflow.

Bizarre. Was the pillow hers? If one of her kids did that, I hope your service fee came out of his allowance.

Hmm, another question should have been asked. How did the pillow get in the duct system? Did they unscrew the vent cover(s) and place it in there and screwed the covers back on? Makes you wonder though.

My guess is that one young sibling didn't want to share the warm air with their other one. Sounds like a sister vs brother thing to me... "I'll just unscrew that vent and shove this little pillow up there so I can hog all the heat! Nobody can see me do it because I said I felt sick and stayed home from school, ha ha ha!!!"

Really? Didn't anyone else notice that the pillow he captured on his camera was a solid bright blue pillow. Then when he reached up to pull it out of the air duct the pillow had miraculously changed into a black and white stripped pillow. What's up with that?
