Parallax is NOT focus. D'oh! Parallax is the apparent movement of the cross hairs against the background, or target, in the scope, when the eye is moved relative to the eyepiece of the scope, and everything else is kept still. Parallax wheel on the scope should be set up so the crosshairs DO NOT MOVE against the target, when the head is moved up or down (or side to side) behind the eyepiece. Otherwise, you're not getting an accurate sight picture, you're getting one which depends on your head position. It is perfectly possible to adjust the eyepiece focus so the image is absolutely clear, but parallax error is still evident in the sight picture. This is why is is important NOT to confuse PARALLAX with FOCUS. I think the best way to set up your scope is to determine your scope zero distance with a chrony and chairgun, then set up a target at the correct zero distance. Adjust the parallax wheel on your scope until the cross hairs don't move against the target when you move your head up and down. THEN and ONLY THEN, adjust the EYEPIECE FOCUS to give a clear image of crosshairs against the target. Then recheck for minor changes in parallax, and mark the position on your parallax wheel, as your "zero point". From there, you can leave the eyepiece alone and mark up the parallax wheel with distances at each increment you wish to shoot at. Do NOT rely on focus as a measure of correct parallax setting, at any distance. Make sure the cross hairs to not move against the target when you move your head up and down. Only then mark up your wheel with the target distance. Hope this helps.

tasmedic + The funny thing is how much certainty and conviction this guy is rambling on with, all the while with absolutely no clue what he's talking about. A good example of how un-curated social media contributes to the dumbing-down of society. They should do everyone a favor and remove this video.

i feel your pain. Just tune the scope and win the comps. ignore the ignorance of people who dont bother to learn the technical aspects of the equipment from a real source :D

it would be so useful if someone actually did a real instruction vid on how to tune in the parallax. its not just wobble the head. there are indicators if you are over or under etc.... but what would i know, i just wrote the user manual for a mil spec rifle scope a few years ago and did 4 years of R&D for an optics company :D

This helps me out. I'm pretty new to the world of scopes. My dad (born 1940) argues that using a scope fore anything under 100 yards is cheating. He gave me an odd look when he saw my air rifle mounted with a scope, haha. Anyhow, the adjustable parallax on my scope is the only thing that really had me scratching my head a bit.

What if I have a 100 yards to infinity parallax on my magnum air rifle , will I be able to have a clear image at 50 yards or less?

I set the parallax on my MTC Mamba so it focuses when I shoot my rimfire at 50 metres. Pretty much anything closer than that is still in focus, so I am surprised you need that much variation. Is it because I only use 5x zoom?

Hi buddy , In HFT once you set your PX you can't touch it again , Its only in the comp of course . When out I change mine all the time to focus better on what i am shooting . I tend to shoot at 9X to 10 X mag and then PX in once I am ready . Hope that helps

That's only UKAHFT rules. And I think it's a bad rule, which doesn't compare to real life hunting. I think it's enough to put a time limit on each shot (after all, quarry can run away!), but banning folk from using their scope wheels gets away from real life hunting. Nuff said re UKAHFT.

+Roger Lait Magnification directly effects the depth of field. Higher magnification reduces the depth of field making focus more critical. So if you're using a low power scope you could have a depth of field of 30+ yards

I just bought a new stalking scope, schmidt and bender, it has a fixed 6x zoom and no parallax at all fixed to between 50 and 150 yards. Still cost 300 quid second hand though!

50 yard parallax might be a bit far out for an air rifle. I got a beauty of a FFP vortex viper scope on offer, but couldn't get any usage out of it because the minimum parallax setting was 50 yards. This almost got me into centre fire shooting, but not quite!!
