Lovely vlog as usual! Your vlogs always make my day!!😁 Alsooo I’ve got a quick question. When flying horses, is there usually a groom or owner on board to make sure they’re okay? I believe on international flights they do tend to have someone like that on board, but I’m just not sure with domestic flights.
@pilotpetefly
@pilotpetefly Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! Yep, there’s always at least 2 handlers on board with the horsies, they’re in good hands!

What happens if the travel bank is say $700 but you check prices from EWR and its $1500 do you have to pay out of pocket the difference?
@pilotpetefly
@pilotpetefly Жыл бұрын
You sure do Josh. It definitely can happen, but we can also always jumpseat on other carriers as well to save some bank. But yes, any difference would come out of our paycheck

I think "deadheading" is an old trucker term, meaning you're heading to where you're going, but you're dead - meaning you're not producing revenue, empty trailer, etc. So, same idea applies for pilots who are being repositioned but not producing revenue.

"Back in the early part of the nineteenth century the term dead head (at first two words) was a theatrical term for a person who had been admitted without charge, perhaps because they had performed some service such as putting up a poster advertising the event. It was an obvious enough formation, as they were a dead weight, not contributing to the expenses of the production." "The first example known is from a publication called The Spirit of the Times of January 1841: “The house on Tuesday was filled as far as $300 could fill, barring ‘the dead heads’ ”. The same idea turns up in a term of the time for a sponger or loafer, for example, somebody who sat by the stove in a tavern, enjoying the warmth without buying a drink. The verb to dead head followed soon afterwards." "From the 1850s, the usage was extended to the idea of a person who travelled on some vehicle - a train or steamboat, say - without paying, either free-loading or on a complimentary basis. That was further extended to refer to a train crew who were travelling as passengers, either to start work somewhere else, or perhaps to go home. I’m told this usage is still common among cabin crews in the modern aviation business." -World Wide Words

I want to be an airline pilot, but I don’t know if I want to do passenger or cargo. It seems like the only major downside of cargo is that you fly mainly at night, so that can mess up health. It seemed like you were flying mainly during the daytime. Did you get lucky?
@pilotpetefly
@pilotpetefly Жыл бұрын
Can't go wrong with either! lucky, no, at my company there is a ton of both day and night available to fly, at least that has been my experience
@carsonknott9884
@carsonknott9884 Жыл бұрын
@@pilotpetefly do the pilots who fly cargo during the night act, look, or feel different than the daytime flyers? I’ve just heard it’s super hard on health
@pilotpetefly
@pilotpetefly Жыл бұрын
@@carsonknott9884 it varies, some pilots enjoy it, others don’t. Like everything there’s pros and cons. Some pilots have a good routine down and nights are easy for them (less delays, direct airport, no t-storms, good sleep routine). Just like nurses, so like night shift, others can’t wait to stop.

I would actually like to fly for FedEx but remain domestic. Is that an option? I wouldn't want to do the long transoceanic flights, except maybe on rare occasions.

I'm considering a late career change back to the airlines, after getting furloughed from NWA for several years from after 9/11 and didn't go back. Would be interested to know your reasons for leaving a major passenger airline to go to a major cargo carrier. (I had an interview invite from FedEx when I was in training at NWA.... woulda-coulda-shoulda...)
