The scene with the hysterical passenger was actually originally just a brief little moment, but the actress herself approached the director with the idea to add the long line of people with increasingly more violent tools, and he loved it.

When this movie came out, my aunt (who has a name similar to, but distinctly recognizable from, Shirley) was dating my uncle and preparing to come home and meet the family for the first time. My grandfather, bless him, was a little confused at the time and greeted her with "... and you must be Shirley. It's wonderful to meet you!" Without missing a beat, she replied, "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, too! And don't call me Shirley." Big laughs were had by all, and even after he figured out what her name actually was, he'd still call her Shirley or Shirl as a nickname for years and years until he passed (she didn't allow anyone else in the family to call her that, though 🤣)

About five years before the movie, there was an actual food poisoning outbreak onboard a Japan Airlines plane. Contaminated ham omelets that were being served for breakfast caused nearly 200 passengers to get sick. Fortunately, the pilots hadn’t eaten the omelets and were able to make an emergency landing. Ironically, they were already near where they were supposed to land. It was by pure luck that the pilots didn’t eat the omelets. Because their biological clocks were still on Alaska time, the pilots had ordered steak dinners instead. The outbreak resulted in recommendations that pilots and passengers be served different meals during the flight.

This film has been rated to have the most laughs per minute. It’s a comedic remake of an original movie from 1957 called ZERO HOUR - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpOmZaV5s6i6c6c.html BTW, the producers bought the rights to ZERO HOUR just to avoid being sued. References: Opening plane in clouds mimicking the movie JAWS. They filmed the plane breaking through the window by getting a hold of the front section of an actual 747, rigging up to multiple tow trucks and having the trucks back the front of the plane into the window. When they were finished the studio bosses asked them why didn't they just use miniatures for the scene and the directors replied "You can do that?"

"how they filmed that" about the plane driving in the terminal ... well they build a full sized front of a plane and drove it trough the terminal window ... easy :) was the most expensive shot of the movie :) (best scene is when the women throws her baby away xD) one of the legends says that when the director was asked why he did choose this expensive way and didnt shot it with a model plane he was like "you can shoot that with a model plane?" and honestly i think no you cant this good xD

This film inspired so many spoof comedies. Even then, everyone acknowledged that the comedy was so over the top and juvenile, which was why having such respected actors delivering the lines made it even funnier! For more spoofs by the people who made Airplane! may I recommend Hot Shots! (A spoof of Top Gun) and my all time favorite Top Secret! (A spoof of spy movies and Elvis movies combined!) and starring Val Kilmer. Great comedy, and great musical numbers too! 😁

the makeup lady was the directors's mother. the movie is an almost shot fir shot "remake" of the 50s airplane movie Zero Hour! Most of the actors in this movie were veteran drama actors. This was done on purpose. the filmakers thought that it would be much funier to put dramatic actors in absurd situations it woulld work better than using comedians in a comedy. And for the most prt it worked. Leslie Nielsen before this film was a dramatic acroe, after this movie he mostly starred in comedies sch as the Naked Gun movies (also made by the same people). Lloyd Bridges was also like Nielsen. After this movie he starred in the Hot Shots movies. The gag with the horse can be open for interpretation. I think it was meant to say that she was horsing around.

The sequel is okay but the first film will always be tops for me. Any plans on watching the sequel?
