The guy playing the Japanese soldier(who commits hari kari) is James Hong. He is one of Hollywood's longest lasting actors. He even made a movie appearance this year at the age of 95.

NOBODY in 1980 would have called Ted Striker a "stalker". He would have been admired for facing his fears to show the woman how much he loves her. This "stalker" interpretation wouldn't have existed before about 2012.

Notice every time they drag someone down the aisle,, someone gets on the PA system to speak and everyone on a plane looks up when a voice comes over the PA

For this "Jim never... at home" gag throughout the film they actually used the same actress from the television commercial. We got the joke instantly back then.

Why would you think that George Zip was anybody's dad, when he died in a raid led by Ted. Ted suffers all of his confidence loss because he blames himself for the death of those 7 pilots.

Some obscure items. I speak Jive lady. The mother on a popular sitcom called 'Leave it to Beaver' & was a proper housewife & mother in white America. The sickness the egg lady had was: 'The Bird Flu' an illness around at the time. The sound of the plane is from a prop plane, not a jet. Makeup lady is the writer's mother. The horse in bed is a reference to 'The Godfather'. Pilot & Co-Pilot are not allowed to eat the same meal. (For this very reason.) The passenger in the cab is a Ca. politician well known for cutting waste of money. Boy's Life was a real magazine, Nun's Life was not. & The airport voices are the real people that do the voices at airports.

Almost all the actors here weren't known at all for comedy. But were serious movie and tv actors.

The white suit that Ted wears when he meets Elaine is like John Travolta’s suit in “Saturday Night Fever.” And the disco music and disco ball also refer to that.

I'm done with this couples reactions. The simple fact they could not let go of Ted being a "stalker" was just too much. And they thought he was obsessive

“Win one for the Zipper” ( George Zipp) is a joke on the famous line about “win one for the Gipper” from the film about real-life athlete and coach Knute Rockne. In the movie George Gipp is played by Ronald Reagan who was running for president when this film was released. The line “win one for the Gipper” was used constantly in the campaign.

Ted has a "drinking problem" - that is, a problem literally drinking - anything. That's the joke. At 44 years old, this film makes a lot of references that don't land so effectively in 2024. For example, the George Zipp story refers to a plot line from a 1940 movie with a character named George Gipp. Not to mention just some of the other passe references like smoking on planes, Hare Krishnas in airports, coffee commercials, war movies, rear-screen projection and Ethel Merman.

In response to what she said at the very end, pretty literally this movie took everything from a movie called Zero Hour! Zero Hour! The general plot is the same and many lines are identical, word for word. They just figured out how to make that serious movie funny.

5:00 Incredibly, Jimmy Walker's previous film appearance was in the atrocious _The Concorde--Airport '79,_ which would have finished off the '70s disaster movie genre even if _Airplane!_ hadn't come along to mock its corpse. (Walker plays a saxophonist who keeps getting high. It's not really a "role" and is completely irrelevant to the plot.) While _Airplane!_ mocks a lot of disaster movie tropes from that era (the nun with a guitar and the girl heading for a transplant are copped straight out of _Airport 1975_ and slapping the hysterical passenger was a regular "joke" in the _Airport_ franchise) the plot, a lot of the dialog and even characters' names are lifted straight out of 1957's _Zero Hour!,_ which helps explain why a guy in his 30s is having WWII flashbacks in 1980.

This is a classic and I hope you enjoyed it. You said because of when the film came out that you would miss a lot of references and you did. That's okay y'all still got the just. One thing I would like to point out is the old woman who knew Jive. She is Barbara Billingsly, who was the mother in the hit show Leave it to Beaver. Also, the woman in the hospital that was singing is Ethel Merman, She was a huge Broadway and film star and that was one of her staple songs.

There are a number of films from the Zucker btothers, I beliive this is the first and one of the best. Before this Leslie Nielson was known as a serious actor, as were a number of others, after his he went into comedy, doing the 'Naked Gun' trilogy who were police film parodies, he also guest starred in TV show 'Due South as a comedic character.

Ya'll are young so it's expected not to get some of the joke references like the old white lady who speaks *"JIVE"* played the straight laced conservative mother on the show *(Leave it to Beaver)*

the woman with the inner monologue is the exact same actress who said that same line, Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home, from our coffee commercials in those years. so the second inner monologue about Jim never vomits at home would have been ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS to the audience at the time

The song the nun was playing on the guitar with the refrain” Sock it to me…” was one of the main songs from the tv show ‘Laugh In’ (from 1968-73) which featured crazy skits, nonsense humor, silly musical bits and broke a lot of barriers for comedy in tv.😊

If you're Breaking Bad fans, notice Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) at the radio... he has a couple of lines, but one of the clearest is probably "about 2 more minutes, chief!" and "he's all over the place! What an asshole!"

I'm genuinely shocked at how much stuff the guy got wrong and how many jokes they not only didn't get, but didn't even realize it WAS a joke. I'd hate to see them try to react to a movie with any actual complexity.

This film parodies so many famous disaster films and war films. The list is amazing: "Towering Inferno ", "Airport", "The Poseiden Adventure, " "From Here to Eternity. In the 70s, there were many "movies of the week" made for broadcast TV, and the themes covered everything from medical dramas to detective thrillers. There are also numerous cultural references from the 60's and 70's. The coffee scene with the husband and wife is a parody of a 1960's Yuban Coffee commercial. It is available to view on KZfaq.

You cut out some great lines! Capt. Oveur- "Give me ham on five, hold the Mayo." Like give me Ham on rye, hold the mayo. And many others. Plus ever exterior shot of the JET in flight has PROPELLER sounds. HA!

Fun fact: here, in France, this movie is titled "Is there a pilote in the airplane?" And all the comedic movies with Leslie Nielsen have a title that starts with "Is there...?", and thus are considered part of the same franchise. Those include: Is there a cop to save the queen? Is there a cop to save the president? Is there a cop to save Hollywood? Etc.

Don’t forget this is a comedy. Don’t equate what’s in this movie to real life in 1980.

One of the funniest things about this movie is that none of the actors in it have ever done comedy before, except for Johnny in the control tower, who ad-libbed all his lines.

Love how you don't skip massive amounts of parts in the movie 😊..the air Israel was just a form of flattery to kind of show the way the orthodox dress . I was laughing with your reactions and it looked liked you both found it really funny and genuinely apprecaited the humour. This movie was literally the biggest thing when i was a small kid i remember seeing the automatic pilot and everything just "bigger " obviously not understanding a lot of the humour as a small child. Its a classic !:)

The main actors all were stars of real drama series before taking part in this film. Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack are all classically trained stage and film actors who are not known for comedy which makes this film hilarious. Barbara Billingsley starred in the wholesome 50's TV show "Leave it to Beaver."

Several of the actors were setious dramatic actors so it threw all of us to see them in these roles. Lloyd Bridges (the head guy in the tower) Sea Hunt tv show (son Jeff Bridges is a great actor too) Peter Graves (Cpt. Oveur the pilot) Mission Impossible tv show Robert Stack (Pilot called on to talk the plane down) The Untouchables tv show Leslie Nielsen (the doctor) drama and scifi movies Ted isn't a stalker. His girl *just* broke up with him by note and he's just trying to talk her out of it. However he IS literally boring the passengers to death. 😂

Good reaction you two. Regarding the smoking, yes, you could smoke on airplanes back then, you could also smoke in restaurants and hospitals, it was a crazy time. You're one of the few people that recognized Jimmie Walker, I watched Good Times regularly back in the 70's, so seeing him, although brief, was still great. Some of the jokes are dated though, such as the husband wanting a second cup of coffee, then the wife questions it. That was a 70's Yuban commercial that they borrowed that from. Movie still holds up though and some of the one-liners are still used to this day. Edit: This is one of those movies that you need to watch a few times to get all the jokes, but you got quite a few of them, which is great.

Staying Alive is from Saturday Night Fever, 3 years before this movie. They are dancing the same way and wearing similiar clothes to John Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney in that movie. The "never drinks a second cup of coffee at home" is a commercial at the time, using the same woman. Just food poisoning, noone put anything in it. There was an early microwave called RadarRange. George Zipp was a pilot killed in the raid that Striker has ptsd from. Win one for the Gipper is a phrase made famous by Knute Rockne.. I don't think trying to get your ex back is necessarily "stalking."

The line, Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home, was a reference to a coffee commercial where the couple were at a restaurant and Jim did want a 2nd cup and the wife thought to herself, Jim never has a 2nd cup.... meaning that the coffee they had a home was not very good but the restaurant was using whatever the coffee was in the commercial (I forgot.. Folgers? Maxwell House??)
