The Ottocast MX is a new approach to wireless CarPlay adapters. Not only does it offer wireless Android Auto as well as wireless Apple CarPlay, but the MX also dips into a unique mode where you can connect your phone to its Wi-Fi hotspot and then watch video content from your Camera Roll, Steam videos from KZfaq, and browse current trends from TikTok on your CarPlay or Android Auto display.
Switching platforms is made easy thanks to its physical quick switch button, similar to their U2-X Pro adapter, which on a single press will disconnect the current mobile, freeing up the adapter for a connection from another device. On paper that sounds great, but in practice it is a little hit-and-miss. The adapter reconnects a little too swiftly (which can only be a good thing), so it's a race to pair the 2nd device before the primary connected device reconnects to the adapter.
Double pressing this button is meant to switch to AirPlay mode. Again in practice, this function can also fail to switch as intended, but if you quickly press the AirPlay mode button on the adapter's home screen before reconnection you can restart the adapter into AirPlay mode.
AirPlay mode is only for iOS Apple devices. Connecting to its Wi-Fi hotspot allows you to select the adapter from the screen mirroring section of the iOS screen. After a little pairing connection you'll be presented with your phone display mirroring on your CarPlay screen. Video delay isn't too bad when swiping between screen pages, but loading up KZfaq and playing back a video resulted in quite a significant audio delay.
This may be fine for casual/passive viewing, but if you're waiting for your EV to charge and want to watch a few KZfaq videos, your experience will vary on the Wi-Fi connection, bandwidth, system performance and interference. For me, my experience wasn't all too great. Switching to camera roll videos improved a little, but frame rates suffered and it was all a little disappointing for the MX's main selling feature. Your own system setup and connection might perform differently for you. In my experience, AirPlay players that buffer content seem to perform better than real-time streaming content. Very few have done this right.
CarPlay and Android Auto performed well. Connections did suffer due to the menu layer that has to load in compared to adapters that don't do this. So power to CP/AA seems to take around 26 seconds in total, most of this is the boot time. With that said, though, unlocking and starting the car was just a few seconds before I saw the CarPlay display, so this delay is less of an issue if your car system behaves the same when unlocking and powering the USB ports before turning the car over.
Calling and music audio delay was acceptable. Interactions didn't have too much lag to them and audio-wise the MX sounded very decent in my opinion. Calling had little delay between out and incoming audio, which is good to see.
Overall, the MX from Ottocast is a decent addition to their existing lineup of adapters for CarPlay. One issue I faced during a few long drives was that on the resume of CarPlay, I encountered a couple of frozen screens. This is also an issue on U2-Air Pro and CarlinKit 5.0. adapters, so I wouldn't chalk this issue that's exclusive to the MX adapter, but a new issue in CarPlay in general and I hope a future update will make the experience more reliable. As for audio lag in AirPlay, I am not sure if this can be fixed as easily, so if this is a primary feature for you, it might be the case of try it and see on your system, unfortunately.

Does anything cast video smoothly and in sync with audio with iPhone or is it not worth looking for that feature yet due to tech limitations? Maybe what I need is just a good wireless CarPlay adapter and then just watch videos from my phone screen.

That’s exactly what I would do. The mirroring or casting on these things are never great or when they are ‘ok’ they aren’t as easy to connect up to them as easily/swiftly.

I was between the MSXTTLY and the Carlinkit 5.0 and they were close in price but I went with the Carlinkit just because it looked like the performance has been adequate with start times but also to have the passthrough GPS seemed like a slight edge for my use over the MSXTTLY. We'll see shortly I guess lol

I just setup MX adapter to the car and for some reason AirPlay isn’t working just CarPlay alone which defeats the purpose for even purchasing this adapter

I don’t believe it does. Only adapters that offer this ability in their config menu are CarlinKit adapters

Thanks! Still waiting for one that has gps passthrough and is not carlinkit. Carlinkit performance is quite sub par compared to ottocast u2-X pro but the gps passthrough has helped me many times when I’m in tunnels😊 so still kinda stuck with carlinkit

You might be waiting a while. Unless other makers of the main brand software reengineer or update their software you won't find passthrough on other brands. It seems the software CarlinKit started and then kept for themselves is the only way to go for GPS passthrough. So it's more likely we would see a faster CarlinKit than other brand adapters running software that supports passthrough GPS.

In a way yes. It’s like an AI Box so it will do this through an android software app than software on a chip like the u2-x uses. So there will be a little extra boot delay

Have you tried updating the 4.0, I thought it has some custom display overrides in the IP config menu that might help with your display issue.

@@CarPlayLife I did reach for support and they suggested to try a specific DPI setting. I also messed around with the display resolution but for some reason the screen of my Chinese import ID3 keeps cropping the bottom part of the AA screen. I haven't been able to update though, because there's a bug in the settings interface when I try to check for updates.

Maybe try a different time of day. Sometimes their servers aren’t ‘ready’ but are at other wises. There’s also file update way of doing it but this is risky as it could brick the adapter if done wrong.

No AirPlay is built in to your iPhone to cast from. But the adapter needs a CarPlay car stereo system for it to work with it

It doesn’t work simultaneously. Cant switch to car play and android auto. At the same time.

Yes. This is because you need to connect to the adapter over Bluetooth and I think this particular one doesn’t have dual Bluetooth to allow both devices to connect to it.

Problem is with Airplay - you can only mirror screen, you can't do simple stream, which can be really annoying, also I'am experiencing audio/video Lagg difference about 0,5s which I hasn't been able to get rid of.

Yes, casting would have been better than screen mirroring. It’s way more intuitive to do it from the app than through Mission Control etc. I found the same issue with video lag. I think it can’t be improved really, which is sad as that’s the main USP of this adapter.

@@CarPlayLife I'll be honest, I wouldn't have a problem to pay more money for better HW without lag and with AirPlay stream. What is the problem with simple AirPlay at all? Do you have any idea? Why need for mirroring anyway?

It’s down to what they can do off the shelf I think. Many of these adapters are rebrands, they don’t go that deep with their own customisations or software changes. So they have to roll with what they have on the SoC Supplying support for iOS and not Android shows there’s a limited software or hardware to keep this cheap. Sadly it doesn’t work all that great though in practice. More should focus on airplay and native casting from apps. Ditch the screen mirroring, it’s never as easy to use. If someone does that right they will be onto a winner! 👀
