Frank Zappa loved "Supernaut". When asked about it, he stated, "I like it because I think it's prototypical of a certain musical style, and I think it's well done." And he correctly noted that "Black Sabbath is the archetype of that style, the hard-core." --Frank Zappa

Hard core to the max in the 70s, no one else like them.

Back in the late 70s age about 16 I found this album at a thrift store.Bought it for 50 cents.Went home and me and my friend Mike Rocked out to it.Problem was it had a bad heat warp and as it made it around the turntable it would slightly warble the sound which was perfect to go along with the dirt weed we was smoking

Everyone is always blown away by how talented and influential Ozzy really was in his day. They expect the doddering old druggie wandering around in a bathrobe, and they instead get this completely original rock and roll force of nature. And he has been both.

FYI snowblind Lyrics....What you get and what you see Things that don't come easily Feeling happy in my vein Icicles within my brain (cocaine) Something blowing in my head Winter's ice, it soon will spread Death would freeze my very soul Makes me happy, makes me cold My eyes are blind but I can see The snowflakes glisten on the tree The sun no longer sets me free I feel there's no place freezing me Let the winter sun shine on Let me feel the frost of dawn Fill my dreams with flakes of snow Soon I'll feel the chilling glow Don't you think I know what I'm doing Don't tell me that it's doing me wrong You're the one who's really the loser This is where I feel I belong Crystal world with winter flowers Turns my day to frozen hours Lying snowblind in the sun Will my ice age ever come Reply

I recently read that Supernaut and Iron Man were two of Frank Zappa's favourite songs, which I found surprising considering the complexity of Zappa's music and the relative simplicity of those two Sabbath songs. Personally, there are many Black Sabbath songs I prefer to Iron Man, but Supernaut is right near the top for me. In any event, I love Sabbath and I love Zappa, so who am I to argue with the great man?

"I've seen the future and I've left it behind" could imply a rejection of a future that was expected or anticipated, and instead choosing to step into the unknown or create a new path. The album marked Tony Iommi’s first venture as a producer, nailing a sound as hazy as the cover. Another tour de force in the riffing department, Vol. 4 didn’t fare as well as their preceding albums with critics or on the charts in either the UK or the States. Hindsight now sees it as arguably the crowning Black Sabbath achievement ...“The first three albums could’ve all been from the same batch really, but [Vol. 4] was when we started introducing different things,” Iommi said. - Excerpts from Loudwire

Slowly, partying took it's toll on the band, esp. The Oz. More pop less explore and less hungry. The Drummer had to seek help. Ozzy was recued by his wife while being on a bender in some motel room. Randy Rhodes too brought our OZZY back to life. My favorite is Madman.

FX. Tony had gotten a new guitar effects pedal with a delay inlike the oreviously available reverb and was showing it off. As it was brand new, it was almost copl at the time. In the later CD age, you can luckily skip FX without effort. Bassist Robert Trujillo, back when he was in the bands Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, was revording an album in the same studio as Ozzy. They got invited insade while Ozzy was recording vocals. He was shocked at how bad Ozzy sounded. He was afraid to say anything. After the take, they rewound and Ozzy sang again to create his signature doubked vocal sound. Suddenly, the horrible vocal sounded like an Ozzy vocal. They then asked if he wanted to do a guest vocal on one of their dongs they just finished recording. They made sure to get a doubled vocal. Robert is now the bassist for Metallica. He's a great bassist, by the way.

La and Che, after snowblind you’ll have a decision to make. Laguna Sunrise is short and should not be reacted to by itself. Either follow the hard driving Cornucopia or listen to it before St Vitus dance. I prefer the 2nd or do all 3 together. Hope we don’t have to wait too long for the Snowblind reaction. 😊

Great song. Geezer Butler's bass groove in this is just nasty. Black Sabbath could have been on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song record label and I think Robert Plant tried to make that happen but apparently Ozzy said no and was too busy playing around with powder so it never did. Sabbath certainly was big but they might have been even bigger had they been managed by Zep's Peter Grant. Instead Sabbath was screwed over by their own record label and management.
