The first and second generations of AirPods made by Apple were given a score of 0 out of 10 by repair specialists at iFixit. AirPods are not designed to be serviced. No hardware components can be accessed without damage to the device, making it a consumable/disposable item. Tens of millions of devices were sold, each one having three sealed-in batteries. This makes it a total electronic waste disaster.
After the success of Ken Pillonel’s previous project, the world’s first USB-C iPhone, he decided to focus on trying to mitigate the AirPods disaster through an engineering project. The goal was to find a solution that gives a second life to the unopenable cases, which all face an inevitable end of life because of their built-in battery.
The solution proposed consists of making available a 3D-printed replacement part that can be downloaded by anyone. The AirPods case can therefore be purposefully damaged while disassembly, then repairs can be made inside, and finally, the 3D-printed replacement part is inserted back in place.
Now that it is possible to open the case, repairs are made possible. A replacement battery can be purchased online, but it is the only replacement part available. If a charging port is broken, there is no way to replace it except by getting a replacement part from another device. The second part of the project consists in creating a replacement part for the Lightning charging port. Because it will soon disappear thanks to a recent EU ruling, the replacement part sports a USB-C connector (bouncing off the previous hack made by Ken) and is also made available online as an open-source project. It is a custom flexible PCB manufactured by PCBWay. This further increases the impact on the possibility of repairing those devices.

@@harrison00xXx Tell me, when you were inside a classroom, did you voice your opinions? Or did it just start the moment you could do it anonymously on the internet? I'm pretty sure your opinions weren't supposed to leave your headspace because they haven't matured yet. A couple of reasons why I think that: - Mass production doesn't counter waste. Thinking it does gives out the impression you've lost your sanity. - Shipping over/buying a new Airpods case entails: Getting the raw materials (all over the world), manufacturing it in China (slave labor + child labor), packaging it for a long bumpy ride, Sending it over by plains,trucks,boats,... (carbon footprint), ... before it ends up at your door. - You've compared the things I've mentioned above, to creating your own case with materials you already have lying around on a machine you already own. I hope this makes you understand how ridiculous your comment really is. If not, good luck buddy... you're going to need it :)

There will be critics saying: "Yeah but I don't have a 3D printer or spot welder -- and Apple is right that all this labor and these materials are more expensive than a new product" This is NOT about forcing every consumer to spend weeks in their garage trying to fix their own broken electronics! This is about allowing enterprising individuals to start repair shops, it's about allowing creative people to refine/automate the process even further so it becomes competitive, it's about eventually refurbishing/modding items in bulk with 3rd party kits. This effort, and fact that the schematics are open, is a giant leap forwards!

It’s the vision of a curious mind to create more opportunities for others potential but there’s either not enough people on the same mindset or a lot of us just have no way of connecting with that same goal in mind at the time. A lot of people lose motivation to put this type of effort into what they do so fast I’m assuming, so what they could’ve envisioned becomes clouded. If the labour and material to repair damaged air pods is too much, how fricking cheap are they to make in the first place? If it takes a repair person who gets paid $40 an hour, 1 hour to fix the airpods, and replacement parts are a few cents, and it's still cheaper to replace the product, how does Apple justify charging $300+ Canadian for airpods? I actually know the truth, marketing and suckers. Right to repair doesn't matter to Apple fanbois, they've been marketed to, and bought in hook line and sinker.

The depressing thing about this is when Apple see this they won't go hey should we consider making our devices even slightly serviceable by having replicable batteries. No they'll go how can we lock out these repaired AirPod chargers. What extra hardware and thus cost can we add to this device to make it less user friendly. I own only 1 Apple product an 80gig Ipod Video which has Rockbox on so no iTines nonsense and I have zero interest in buying anything else due to this kind of thing. Unless the Americans dismantle the Corporate State, the country is doomed. There is no democracy when politicians - Presidents and Congress - are beholden to their corporate masters. These Wall Street Robber Barons spawned the corporate coup and the machinery of State Terror. The Americans will continue to pay - yet more and more - for their complacency: for believing all they need to fix their world is the right vote. The will continue to pay for looking the other way when the government is caught decade after decade managing the international drug trade, running pedophile sex rings, for toppling democratic governments and installing criminal despots & dictators, and for operating as an international criminal cartel. The Americans are Trapped like Rats in a Cage. Voting changes nothing when the system is nourished by corporate monopoly graft and overruled by the National Security State. [Why can’t we see the CIA JFK documents when a law was unanimously created to force their full and unobstructed release?] There are so many corporate parasites that the host is dying fast. In short: The U.S. Is an “Oligarchy With Unlimited Political Bribery” Corporate bribery of politicians is legal in the USA What else can we expect? Every Administrations top positions are for sale: Even under Trump, the man that caused insulin pricing to go from $10 to $400 became head of Health and Human Services; the coal industry briber is now the chief of the EPA; etc In the USA, drug pricing is a crime against humanity! For instance: generic Ibrutinib costs $86 in Australia. However, the same drug in the USA costs over $22,000 USD! Imagine the total cost to the patient requiring several rounds of Ibrutinib plus Obinutuzumab! Drug monopolies have (legally) bribed politicians [1] - And now use the powers of “life & death” to extort patients. Former president Jimmy Carter said on the nationally syndicated radio show the Thom Hartmann Program that the United States is now an “oligarchy” in which “unlimited political bribery” has created “a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors.” Both Democrats and Republicans, Carter said, “look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves.” Carter was responding to a question from Hartmann about recent Supreme Court decisions on campaign financing like Citizens United; and later McCutchen, 569 U.S. 88, 133 S. Ct. 1537, 185 L. Ed. 2d 654, 81 U.S.L.W. 4236 (2013), which greatly expanded political bribery by corporate monopolies & billionaires. [Also Buckley v. Valeo, the landmark case involving the constitutionality of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (FECA); and, First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, 435 U.S. 765 (1978), is a U.S. constitutional law case which defined corporate bribery as a free speech right of corporations!] Transcript: firstlook.org/theintercept/2015/07/30/jimmy-carter-u-s-oligarchy-unlimited-political-bribery/

BTW when the Red Cross offered to take care of the bodies or Russian soldiers, Putin said no. That's how much he cares about his own people. So yeah we're going to f*** support sending weapons to Ukraine. Is it a perfect country? No, it's been in a civil war since 2014. Is the current President's son involved in corruption there? I'd say without the shadow of a doubt. And? Who are we to let them get massacred because of what essentially is the biggest diplomatic mistake of the 21th century so far? Ukraine got wrecked because we offered them a position in NATO without caring about them enough to fight for them. We f*** up and then we're going to let them die like so many other countries.

Excellent work! There is much to love about Apple, but their habit of waffling on about how environmentally friendly they are while simultaneously going out of their way to design products so they cannot be repaired or even have the batteries replaced is unacceptable. Apple has the might that other companies don't have to push the entire industry toward more environmentally responsible production. Projects like this are a great way to dismiss Apple's claims that they are doing their best.

You also raised a great point about the waste. How can these companies say they’re being environmentally conscious only to force consumers of their products to have throw away ones that could’ve been repaired.
