As an outsider who's never been to Ireland, and who's honestly never planning to go. Why on gods green earth would you bother learning Irish in the first place? And why would you ever use it, except as a secret language that non-Irish don't speak?
@larsbonau4067
@larsbonau4067 4 жыл бұрын
@@rutger5000 I really don't like this question and I will try to explain why. I can't speak for the Irish but I would guess for cultural reasons. Irish is a dying language and that itself might be enough of a reason to learn it. There is just the problem as long as noone is willing or able to speak it casually it will die. Contrary to English, Spanish, French or other similar important languages there is little to no incentive to practice Irish. Therefore, parents would have to raise their children speaking Irish; which would mean that English would be a second language to them and that doesn't seem to be the best idea. Which leads to your question being a valid question. Learning a language like Irish can be seen as a waste of time and energy. Similarly the different dialects in Germany are slowly dying. Many schools opted for teaching the regional dialect. However, the students never get fluent and thus never use it in real life. Therefore, the whole endeavour is not more than folklore taught in school and ten or twenty years down the line there won't be a native speaker left to teach those dialects. Nothing of that would be damaging to a society or even an important issue, but I can see that it is saddening to watch a part of ones culture being forgotten. Refraiming your question to: "How much effort should be put into teaching skills that won't help you in a modern, capitalistic society?" Leading to the question: "Why do we learn?" And at that point I don't like the idea that we only learn to be able to earn money. Learning must be allowed to be economically pointless. Knowledge needs freedom. Anything that can be learned is enriching for a society. Either culturally or it will help us finding new ways of thinking about ourselves and the society we live in. Questioning why someone would or should learn something supports ignorance.

My first experience with Irish taxi drivers was from 2007, I arrived with my parents and we rented a car at the Dublin airport. We had a reservation for a B&B in Glenageary, next to Dún Laoghaire and got lost, so we stopped in a gas station to ask directions. A guy there said, "I'm a taxi driver and I'm heading in that direction to pick up a fare, so just follow me". After a while he stopped and pointed down a side street and said, "That's the street you want, the place is probably near the end. Enjoy your stay!" and waved and drove off. We were all ultimately impressed with the decency of Irish folk.

I remember talking to a teacher that was living and working in a country where she stood out as a foreigner. She said one of the frustrating things was the way people there on vacation would just hand over wads of cash with that 'it's ok we're tourists' attitude. She couldn't afford to live there year round if she was being paid on par with what locals were making while routinely being charged inflated tourist prices. The fact that she was fluent in the language didn't get her off the hook.

Can we just appreciate how Foil and Hog traveled all the way to Italy to find a taxi driver that could scam them so they could record it, while Arms stayed home and became a taxi driver a deliberately waited for his passengers to be Italian tourists, so they could use all the footage for a sketch. That’s dedication.

Where I live in Germany the Taxi drivers are seldom natives, they all speak with a foreign accent. Therefore it amazes me that that seems to be different in others countries. I must say that I think that so many non-native speakers do Taxi driving here, is due to the fact that they cannot do much other stuff, where they at least make some money without getting treated poor. I see the difference very clear when I visit Denmark. There you rarely see e.g. non-native speakers in a Mc Donalds, while in Germany they love to give those jobs for poor money to poor foreigners. I read about it and it said there that when Mc Donalds came to Denmark, they had to agree to use better ingredients and give people minimum wages. But I don't know if that is true. It is just very obvious that there must be something different in the system. So if you still have native speakers doing such a job in your country, I suppose that they get at least a bit of a decent wage. Cause here, jobs where people are treated poorly, mostly go to foreigners which cannot speak the language and don't have a good education. That is sad and not right but also a reality here.

Ya know, after seeing this video, I asked myself - why do I speak all these languages if I get to use them once every so often? Time to book that Euro-tour... Cant wait to get jammed by the taxi drivers.. haha

In Jan 2020, my father and J went to Amsterdam. We spoke. We are South African and we told him. He, a Dutch man, told us he worked on building the deep water port of Richards Bay.
